Non Standard Institute, or NSI as they're usually masked as, are a prolific duo from Germany whose productions have appeared on mythical labels like Finland's S?hko, and Switzerland's Cadenza. All in all, they are among the few who know how to truly craft a minimal groove. They return to our charts via their own Non Standard Productions outlet, coming through with 5863, an important album - both in size and sound - that successfully ticks off all the musical elements which they have to offer. Cold shards of neo-classical meet hollow, ritualistic drones and computer fuzz in a way that reminds us of Eleh's output for London's Touch label, and it's hard to pin-point any current material that does this better than them. Masters of pace and subtlety, the pair craft a deep and complex electronic album that leaves much up to the interpretation of its listeners, a rare treat that is all-too-often overlooked these days.
