Review

Since joining XL Recordings earlier in the year - a smart move for someone of her global profile and popularity - Peggy Gou has unleashed a trio of singles that hint at a newly expanded musical outlook. Unsurprisingly, the full extent of her current musical vision can be seen (and heard) on 'I Hear You', the South Korean artist's long-anticipated debut album. It's a pleasingly entertaining, on-point and accessible set all told, with Gou self-consciously bouncing between nostalgic '90s house bumpers ('Back To One'), mid-tempo breakbeat/US garage fusions (the Morales' Red Zone style hook-up with Lenny Kravitz, 'I Believe In Love Again'), street soul/reggaeton fusion ('All That'), rushing summer anthems ('It Goes Like (Nanana)', 'Lobster Telephone'), a South Korean re-imagining of D&B ('Seoulsi Peggygou'), Balearic synth-pop ('I Go') and pitched-down acid breaks ('Purple Horizon').
