Pleasurekraft follow their 2018 debut album with a deeper dive into the outer reaches of techno. Machines starts with the ambient textures and vocal samples of "Last Sapien", which shifts into a pulsating track midway through and the downtempo beats and traditional pipes and violins of "Nostalgic for the Future". These mood pieces set up the listener for dance floor tracks like the throbbing rhythm of "Hush" and the ominous bass and intense sirens of "Panopticon (The Patron Saint of Global Surveillance)". While there are some conceptual tracks like "The Occupant", Pleasurekraft's focus remains dance floor-focused as the epic builds of "I Sing the Body Electric" and the relentless "Corpse Reviver Number 3" both demonstrate.
