Review

Maidstone producer Rob Redford caught the attention of Local Talk chiefs Mads Mats and Tooli via a series of self-released EPs rich in deep and jackin' cuts heavily influenced my old school Chicago house and Detroit "machine soul". This trademark style is at the heart of his new 'Drum Machine Soul' series for the Swedish label, which here debuts with a fine three-tracker. Opener 'Imagine' offers a superb fusion of spacey, angular Detroit bass, tough but bouncy drums, metallic effects, reverb-heavy spoken word snippets and vintage Chez Damier pads, while 'MPC Soul' is the kind of pleasingly swung MPC-house jam that we'd normally expect to hear from Waajeed or Andres. 'Shades of Blue', meanwhile, underpins classic deep house musicality with a deliciously jazzy broken beat rhythm.
