Comprised of a collaboration between Indonesian artists Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara Herman, Senyawa step up to Rabih Beaini's Morphine label with but a few select releases behind them. The sound conjured up on Menjadi is a clamouring, nerve-wracking affair rich with Herman's vocal incantations and Suryadi's bambuwukir playing, and it sounds exotic in a way that few other well-documented ethnic styles do. From the earthen percussive stomps to the fraught melodics, this is an album rich in evocation and drama, without using any familiar signifiers to transmit such emotions.
