Review

Due to its largely improvised nature and high quality threshold, Septimus's sole album, "We Want a Piece of the Pie", has long been something of a collector's item, with original vinyl copies changing hands for eye-watering sums online. Happily, Cultures of Soul has licensed it and here presents the first official digital download reissue. Sitting somewhere between the jazz-funk antics of Weather Report, early '80s soul, jazz-rock and high-paced disco funk, each of the eight tracks was recorded live at one of the umpteen gigs the band performed around Boston in the late '70s and early '80s. That straight-to-tape approach not only captures the energy of their live performances, but also the ludicrously high quality of the band's musicianship.
