Product information

If the recent exposure to vuvuluezas has put a dampener on your inclination for African music then the amazing sounds of Sowetan niche genre Shangaan Electro should have a healing effect. Props must once again go to Honest Jon's for bringing this super fast music to the general attention of uncultured ingots like us. Label boss Mark Ainley and Basic Channel icon Mark Ernestus curate this 12 track compilation of marimba led 180+ bpm booty shaking afro electro recorded between 2006 and 2009. Shangaan Electro was borne out of the much slower Shangaan Disco in 2005 when Sowetan composer Nozinja revolutionized the local music scene by upping the tempo exponentially and replacing bass and guitar with marimba and mid keyboards. Nozinga has created a phenomenon now, overseeing weekly dances and producing the most popular Shangaan Electro groups such as the distinctive Tshetsha Boys and sister duo Tiyiselani Vomaseve who feature prominently on this bewitching compilation. Highly recommended.
