Review

Whatever your thoughts on "celebrity DJs" in general, it'd be hard to deny that Craig Charles has leveraged his high-profile status to introduce traditionally obscure or underground funk and soul music to a wider audience, and that has to be a good thing. This latest volume in the 'Trunk Of Funk' series continues in that same laudable vein, with a notable emphasis, this time around, on contemporary artists such as New Mastersounds, The Third Degree, The Nextmen (with the decidedly Finley Quaye-ish 'Big Time'), Kyle Audist and The Harlem Gospel Travellers - though that's not to say there's no room, too, for older cuts like Beggar & Co's 1981 Brit-funk classic 'Somebody Help Me Out'. As for Dave Lee and Omar collab 'Starlight'... fuhgeddaboutit!
