Review

Damien Lapena is a relatively new name in techno, but Zeta shows that he really understands the mechanics of the dance floor. "Zoetrope" is a linear, repetitive affair and is a good indicator of his sound. Inspired by the functional Berghain sound but also informed by Jeff Mills' outer space fascination, the relentless rhythm features hypnotic textures bubbling under the surface. It's a similar tale on "Zodiac", where Lapena adds melancholic twists and turns to the big room sound. The title track also throws up a curveball, with vocals scattered among its loopy, industrial groove, while "Zayin" is the most extreme cut thanks to its banging, distorted beats.
