While soul has always been a massive ingredient in the potent sound stew that is Detroit deep house, it's still a relative rarity to find one of the Motor City's house producers turning their attention to the style. That's what the legendary Theo Parrish has done here in collaboration with infrequent collaborator Maurissa Rose, a long-serving local soul singer and songwriter whose credits also include appearances on Alton Miller and Eddie Fowlkes records. 'Free Myself', their first joint album', is a joyous concoction - a dusty, musically rich and predictably inventive affair that does a brilliant job in mixing Parrish's take on neo-soul and R&B with breezy, jazz-flecked deep house cuts, broken beats and occasional nods to Latin musical culture. A genuinely brilliant album, as expected.
