Review

Push is Hessler's second release for the IMF label. In many ways, it encapsulates the owner on Marcel Fengler's propensity for diverse but always driving sets on the main floor in Berghain. The title track is the embodiment of peak time; hints of Chicago jack run through the linear rhythm, but it's that pounding, all-powerful kick that has the greatest impact. "The Hope" sees the east German producer slow down the pace without sacrificing his power thanks to a moody, system-levelling bass. While there are traces of Chicago and Detroit on these tracks, Hessler then turns his attention to a particularly Germanic strain of techno on "Rise" and "Reflections"; there, eerie riffs are fused with tough rhythms and insistent filters for a thrilling combination.
