Review

Having previously produced a variety of club-friendly, heavily electronic house tracks, Italian producer Tony L has gone back to his roots with Superfunkycalifragisexy. It eschews trance-inspired riffs and thumping digital bottom end in favour of something far more organic: a tribute to black American funk, soul and disco from the 1970s. It's a pretty authentic exploration of the sound, too, offering a cosy, fireside take on Blaxploitation grooves, sax-laden library funk and upbeat heavy soul. It's nowhere near as reverential as much revivalist fodder - Tony L is interested primarily in mood, and that's no bad thing.
