Review

Spanish DJ/producer Sergio Fernandez is the latest artist to contribute to Toolroom's Selector series and in so doing, helps to change perceptions about the label. Fernandez' own "Baloncesto Femenino" kickstarts the mix and its breathless piano keys are in stark contrast to some of the boisterous releases in Toolroom's back catalogue. That said, there are some great percussive tracks here, most notably the drunken, muffled vocal and dense drums of Mihalis Safras' "Stranger", and Jay Lumen's tough, rhythmic take on Kevin Saunderson's Detroit classic, "The Sound". However, it's Fernandez' soulful sensibilities that really shine through and the highpoint is Weiss' vocal-led, deep Chicago house groove, "The Guitar Man".
