It's strange that Planet Funk is Scottish producer Vince Watson's debut for Poker Flat, as his penchant for melodies and tendency to situate his grooves between house and techno would appear to be ideal for Steve Bug's label. However, Funk marks a departure for Watson. The title track is based on a tearing bass and chords that seethe with a heaviness not common to his work. "Paradise" meanwhile, finds him in more familiar terrain, with uplifting melodies based around a rolling groove. Marco Resmann is drafted in to rework the title track and provides another surprise, with a dense, jacking rhythm combined with a more menacing chord sound.
