Katakana Edits Vol 132
Baila - (4:07) 53 BPM
Review: El Paso has become quite the Katakana regular of late, having helmed vols 115, 116, 122 and 129, and now he returns for a fifth instalment with four funk reworks in tow. 'Ms Fine Brown' revisits Syl Johnson's 'Ms Fine Brown Fame' from 1976, while James Brown's much-sampled 1973 classic 'The Payback' becomes 'Revenge'. The sources for 'Baila' and 'Tutu' - both featuring Spanish-language vocals - will sadly have to go unidentified, but the former has a Nu Yorican, boogaloo/barrio funk kinda vibe about it while the lower-tempo 'Tutu' is much more tropical and lounge-y in feel.

Review: Never a dull moment on this eight-track, 10-mix collection from Sweden's Ture Sj?berg, AKA Beatconductor, which finds him in a re-edit/mash-up frenzy as he reworks a range of classic cuts in often highly unexpected style. Donna Summer's 'Love Is In Control' gets a 60s lounge jazz infusion on 'Finger On The Trigger', Beyonce's 'Crazy Is Love' is given a reggaefied makeover, Angie Stone goes head-to-head with the Steve Miller Band on 'Fly Like A Stone', and so it goes on. Along the way you'll find nods to Stevie Wonder and Tom Jones, before the album's completed by three different mixes of 'Good Vibes' - the Beach Boys if they'd formed in Kingston, JA rather than Hawthorne, CA!

Review: If life teaches you anything it's to expect the unexpected. Here the mighty re-edit label Katakana deliver their 42nd instalment of scapel jobs. However, this time, rather than have a specific producer curate an EP, they've shaken up the formula and delivered a compilation of edits. There's a whopping 24 reworks to enjoy too, many thrills and spills, but our favourites include Morlack's explosive drum-lead MJ cover, "Don't Stop", Mister Vagz' corny 60s mash-up "Love Me Venus" and Dim Zach & Deem's baggy rework of the Happy Monday's sublime "Loose Fit".

Katakana Edits Vol 85
All The People - (3:21) 59 BPM
Review: The unstoppable Katakana Edits series rolls on, with Vol 85 coming from label regular(s) Padcore. First to get the Katakana treatment is the Beasties classic 'Intergalactic', while 'Sweetback' revisits Viola Wills' 1969 ghetto funker of the same name (which predates Melvin Van Peebles' Blaxploitation flick by two years, fact fans). 'All The People' cuts up an unidentified, lounge-y soul take on Blues Magoos' 1967 garage/psych nugget 'The People Had No Faces', while Esther Phillips' 1971 cover of Gil Scott-Heron's 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is' provides the basis for the EP's standout cut, heartbreakingly melancholic closer 'Home'.

Katakana Edits Vol 12
Without You - (3:06) 76 BPM
Review: The latest addition to the Katakana Edits party is the mysterious FH. Equally mysterious are the source tracks for the edits featured here. However there's no ambiguity about the standard of tunes though. There's five of them and unlike the more swingy vibes of the label's recent releases, "Vol 12" is going for a tougher funk vibe, almost rare groove in places. Highlights include the gritty "Down In The Basement", the percussive Latin jam "Diablos" and the loose and groovy "Yo-Yo Beat".

DJ Laurel - "Right On" - (4:14) 72 BPM
Review: This decidedly epic collection marks Katakana Edits's first foray into the compilation market and is designed as a "best-of" style outing. It boasts 30 reworks, mash-ups, remixes and re-edits gleamed from the prolific imprint's first 50 singles. Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

Hober Mallow - "Here I Am" (45 edit) - (4:42) 53 BPM
Review: This latest two track drop from the Agogo team is a truly pleasing listen, as Hober Mallow and Jim Sharp link up for a groovy A & B side showcase. We kick off with the smooth horn riffs and grizzly vocal finesse of Hober Mallow's 'Here I Am', with this classic-sounding creation in fact being the '45 edit'. On the B-side, Jim Sharp delivers something super smooth with '10th Wonder', which again draws on groovy drum riffs and smooth basslines to create a tidy base, from which we hear a number of catchy rap verses which really elevate the EP to a new level. This is sunshine flavour down to a T.

Review: For this, their inaugural release, Beatnik City round up a pan-international squad (including British, Italians and Brazilians) in what proves to be a great homage to 'the world's sexiest city'. There's seven tracks here - all of which look back to the hazy golden 1960s and conjures up vintage Copacabana vibes through a combination of salsa and Latin loungey sounds and melodies all welded to tougher modern breaks for a contemporary slant.

Tasty Beats Vol 4
Bruno Borlone/Boogie Mike - "I Like The Party" - (3:29) 58 BPM Hot
Review: More scrumptious sonics from the Polish party crew, the fourth volume of Tru Funk's "Tasty Beats" series sees old friends and new lay down five sizzling jams that will guarantee unified butt-shaking. New faces Bruno Borlone and Boogie Mike lay down a Spanish rap funk jam "I Like The Party", DJ Axe pays homage to Nice & Smooth and Curtis Blow, ElectroGorilla reach for the lazers with the euphoric breakbeat flexor "Funky Beast" and Rory Hoy and Saxon Scoundrels get busy on a classic rock and swashbuckling drum vibe with "Bouncin & Rockin". Finally The Beat Selecta boldly fixes up the classic Batman theme tune on a D&B with - quite cleverly - Hijack's "Badman Is Robbin" rap originally sampled by DJ Supreme. Holy bootlegs!

Review: We can always trust on Tru Funk to deliver fine swarms of sample-ridden breakbeat and they've done it again with their 8th instalment of the Nu Party Breaks series! As per usual, there's plenty of new names and talent throughout, such as Freethinker Funk Essence's "Nu Number Dancefloor" - sampling beauty - and "Street Jam" by the Funky Boogie Brothers. To be honest, everything on here is killer and if you're into your old-school funk breaks, look nowhere else!

We Got The Funk
We Got The Funk (Caz remix) - (4:30) 60 BPM
Review: Supreme boogie business from longstanding German beat operator Jayl Funk; taking a classic Herbie Hancock/WAR style bassline, laying it gracefully over a series of bolshy big beats and massaging it with flutes, cowbells, horns and party noises, it's an instant party starter that people will recognise without ever hearing it previously. Looking for more of a 80s electro boogie twist with subtle shards of early Guy Called Gerald? Jump on Caz's version. You got the funk!

Hold That Groove (original version) - (3:44) 57 BPM Hot
Review: Jayl Funk is a leading German producer closely associated with Quincy Jointz and the Timewarp crew. Here he releases a one-off tune, "Hold That Groove" for Honkey Phonk. At just under four minutes, it's short, smoothly-produced slice of breakbeat funk that's impossible to remain seated around. If, somehow, limbs and torso's aren't moving then Zamali and Apedroid are on hand to deliver a harder, faster, funkier rocked-out version. Dancefloor gold!

Four Aces Funk EP
Feel The Heat - (3:43) 58 BPM Hot
Review: Honkey Phonk founder Jayl Funk outta Germany brings his cards to the table with this Four Aces EP, turning to disco as an inspiration for the most part with a sweet touch of samba in "Together". With a rocksteady groove and blaxploitation funk backing the horns, vocals and extra piano rolls of "Feel The Heat", it's the filtered strings of life and roller disco decadence of "Something" that accompanies the '80s-pop elements, spaced-out vocoders, and undeniable dancefloor vibe of "Fantastic Sunshine". Four of a kind.

Boogaloo 22 - (4:32) 53 BPM
Review: If you're looking for some proper dirty, lowdown funk vibes, you won't do much better this week than this four-tracker from French producer Morlack, which indeed makes its intentions clear from the outset thanks to the rather rude spoken female vocal that kicks off 'Boogaloo 22'. Once that's out of the way, you're in for 20 minutes of sleazy, grinding beats, low-slung basslines and James Brown-esque vocal shouts that should satisfy even the most pernickety of funkateers, helped along in the case of 'Need A Help 22' by some cheeky AWB nods. The exception to the rule is 'Poopoo Lala', which has an 80s electrofunk/boogie feel and comes topped with the vocal from Jocelyn Brown's 'Ego Maniac'. Good stuff!

Telepathy - (5:34) 59 BPM
Ur Life - (5:07) 59 BPM
Review: Within the world of breakbeat, there are few names held in such high regard as Morlack, who continues his incredibly consistent run this time around with a five track package on Funk Blasters, that being the fourth edition of his 'Cheeky Edits' series. We begin with the 80's inspired drum smashes and stripped back vocal sampling on 'Breakin', followed by groovy bass guitar licks of 'Telepathy' and pulsating retro synth work of 'Ur Life'. The quality levels remain incredibly high throughout as we then take in 'Da Bomb', a disco-ready roller decorated with glistening guitar riffs and a well sampled chorus block, before the brick wall drum smashes of 'Funky Stuff' see us out in style. Excellent work.

Katakana Edits Vol 10
Capital S - (5:13) 78 BPM
Review: How many edit series can boast reaching a tenth volume? Ok, well how many can boast of attaining ten successful ones? Here French funk party commander Morlack provides five new top-notch retweaks that take no prisoners. "Loose It" is a tight James Brown-style jam that occasionally veers into French electro territory, "Let's Boogie" is all funk grooves and tough hip-hop breaks, "Big Pill" is total rubberband disco-funk,"Capital S" is more electro-boogie and finally "Tough" wraps things up with a big ole slap bass and flute singalong!

Track02 - (3:43) 60 BPM
Track04 - (5:42) 50 BPM
Review: We can usually identify the source material of Padcore's re-edits, but he's got us well and truly stumped with the four cuts featured here, though the overall cinematic vibe leads us to suspect he may have been rummaging in bins full of soundtrack albums! In any case, 'Kayne' is a slow, looping affair with a vaguely western-ish feel, both of which are qualities it shares with 'Play With Fire', while 'Track 02' is a livelier number with what sounds like a mariachi brass section. 'Track 04' completes the EP on a more straight-up funk/soul tip. File under 'obscure esoteric pleasures'.

Get Ice On It - (4:09) 58 BPM
Played by: Superbreak
Review: For the 48th instalment of the popular Katakana Edits series, the shadowy figures behind the rework stable have turned to Mister Vagz, a producer who has previously contributed to a couple of other label EPs. It's pleasingly varied, with Vagz effortlessly switching between spaced-out, bass-heavy mash-up pastures (the reggae/hip-hop/funk-rock hoedown of "Stopper Wayz") and echo-laden electrofunk-rap business ("Get Ice On It"). Throw in the pitched-down soul meets classic hip-hop shuffle of "Supernatural Soul" and the heady soul breeziness of "Wondrous Regulate" and you've got a fine EP of grown-up mash-ups. In three words: mature party-starters.

Ring - (4:29) 58 BPM Hot
Played by: Trotter, Morlack
Review: If ever there was a resident curator of the esteemed nu-disco Katakana Edits series, it's the Go-Go hero Morlack. Frankly, he's always at it. Here he's back for numero 47, this time rustling up three new cuts for our itchy disco feet. "Ring" goes for the jugular, taking a well-known (to the point of wedding disco classic) 70s barnstormer and adding some seriously filthy electro arpeggios to the mix. Next up, "Up Down" is a slow and groovy party breaks cover version of Diana Ross' perennial classic. Last but not least is "Tell Me Something Good" which is relaxed and mellow reggae fun at its finest.

Tis Alright - (3:29) 55 BPM
Review: The honour of fronting the latest installment of Katakana's Edits series has been bestowed on the Bergerac of funk himself, Jersey's Zemerald (aka Joseph Kavanagh). Without missing a beat he rises to the challenge and delivers five expertly sliced reworks, with some of our faves including "Soul Girl" a sassy, stompin' retort to the more famous Soul Man, the raw R&B of "Candy" and the guilty pleasures of "Wicked Drummer", a cheeky update of the classic Funky Drummer break.

Motherfunker (Tonbe mix) - (5:39) 59 BPM
Review: The words 'funk' and 'funky' are two of most over-used and wantonly misapplied in the entire musical lexicon, but rest assured they're employed entirely appropriately here! 'Funk Off' is an authentically fat n' squelchy, late 70s/early 80s-sounding affair, but with a modern twist - to contemporary ears, that bassline will recall both Daft Punk's 'Da Funk' and Basement Jaxx's 'Remedy'. 'Motherfunker' operates in similar territory, but with something of a Compass Point-like swing to the bass and topline hints of 'Ashes To Ashes'-era Bowie, while Tonbe provides a rerub of the latter that packs a heftier kick, presumably to enable smoother transition onto house floors.

Review: The second of two big break edit releases from Resense: World champion monkey boxer Mako and decorated turntablist Mr Bristow get real with two more funk obscurities. "Breaks All Tight" struts with a classic Motown feeling and a vocal power that's not dissimilar to Lee Fields. With a large part of his discography coming through Chosen Spokes, Bike makes his debut on Resense with something inspired by the sounds of James Brown and Q-Tip. "Let's Ride" sees a classic and undeniable funk groove pitched all the way down that's backed up by a lowriding bassline, chunky kick and freewheelin' lyrics to boot. Delay Lama Funky Tibet
Funky Tibet (Vito Lalinga remix) - (4:55) 57 BPM
Review: Those pesky plastic brick enthusiasts are at it again, as the Lego Editors take their rusty scalpels to the amusingly titled Delay Lama's "Funky Tibet". Their "Lego ReFunk" comes in three parts, with the main (EP-opening) version offering the tightest, peak-time ready revision - all jaunty horns, crispy funk drums, rubbery bass, foreboding backing vocals and razor sharp guitars - and "Part 3" playing around with effects in a dancefloor disco dub style. The headline revision comes from pal Vito Lalinga, who opts for a smoother beat, greater use of jazz-funk style trumpet and sax solos (buried a little in the Lego Edit mixes), and lashings of wonderfully warm Fender Rhodes electric piano.

Review: Every now and then we bestow an unofficial 'outstanding achievements in professional moniker' award. Philly Vanilli are pretty much guaranteed to hold on to this title for a long time to come. "The Sould Groove Experience" is their latest missive for Manolo Brigante's Austrian We Mean Disco! imprint and it's packed with reworked '70s soul gems (eight to be precise). Highlights include the shimmering Fender Rhodes slow jam "Soul Food", the rolling phasered guitar freak out "I Need Da Funk" and the campy Eurodisco effervescence of "To Be In Love".

But First Break - "Turn The Beastie Loose" - (4:17) 59 BPM
Review: The second instalment of Licked Out Funk on Funk Fusion is rip-roaring to say the least, as all 28 tracks were brought into this world with the sole purpose of getting you moving, something accomplished through big drum hits and recognisable samples. Almost every track on this compilation has a sample you'll recognise; 'Come To Skanker' is a distortion of Beatles classic 'Come Together', 'Ain't No Funkin' does a good job flipping Chaka Khan's original 'Ain't Nobody' and 'Trippin Biggie' gives the funk treatment to The Notorious BIG. This is a feel-good album of still quality tracks and you'll have a hard time not moving to the procession of boom-bap drums, big synth lines and sense of retro nostalgia.

London's Funk Fusion are back with Fused Funk Volume 16, which is a whopper of a compilation; 17 servings of block rockin' beats which will suit any occasion.. almost! Some of the highlights on here (and there's quite a few) are: "More Diggity" by Jay Tip; no guesses what this is a remix of (hint: Blackstreet!) but there's no hints for which rock'n roll classic got mashed up with jump-up drum and bass on Phat Bangers Club's "Wah Wah Everybody". Elsewhere, Sticky Icky's "I Wanna Hold You" takes the timeless classic by The Beatles and injects it with some tough breaks.

Funky Re-Touches Vol 4
Slow Driving - (3:05) 77 BPM
Review: Much like ol' blue eyes before him, Funk Sinatra does things his way. If this means not releasing anything for nearly a year, then so be it! Now this re-edit maestro is back with four new sizzlers, and they kind of combine the classic rock and vintage disco directions that he had previously exploring. First up "Cecilia" and "Slow Driving" cover the former, souping up classic Simon & Garfunkel and hazy country rock respectively. However its with the slinky funk of "Good Boy" and the pulsating disco of "Here Comes That Sound Again" where he really excels.

Review: Label boss Mathias Lederer (DJ Galletas Calientes) has experienced the dark side of the palm tree and he wants to spread the word! The most effective way of doing so, he reckons, is to release this 16-track compilation that aims to provide some unexpectedly thrilling fusions of genres such as cumbia, acid jazz, merengue, moombahton, psychedelic rock and experimental electronics. The majority of acts are Colombian producers and bands, but he's also found some tropical electronic acts from Holland, France, Germany and Venezuela resulting in a sonic version of a ritual ayahuasca session with a mountain shaman!

Review: Ever turn up to a slightly strange but inviting house party to find a DJ playing a list of your favourite tracks - although you have no idea where they're from? It's label like Minimatic that keep the party going for another decade. Where electro-swing goes for sped up ballroom and big band jazz, Minimatic's approach to genre reformation takes the likes of UK pop (Oasis and "Owner of A Lonely Heart"), US hip hop ,(Eminem, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga) to slices of R&B via Ed Sheeran and dresses them up latin rhythms of baile and urban funk, adding touches of turntablism, jazzy horns and keys to lowriding grooves.

Review: As we've learned in the past the Funk Hunk likes muscle, lots of disco muscle. His edits are never weak. So it's business as usual on Funkier Than That, his latest selection of edits. There are four cuts here to get up and down to. "Funkier Than That" is a snappy, Minneapolis-style majestic funker, "Pushin' On" is perky synth-pop and "Making Love" is fast, sweaty and a thrill a minute. Lastly "YYT Shake (Funk Hunk remix)" is a cool slice of vintage B-Boy hip-hop.
