Review: XL are always 100 per cent on the money when it comes to remix duties. This time, Hot Chip's Joe Goddard turns in a splendid, house-driven remix of Jungle's now infamous "Time" tune. Whereas the original is more sparse and less floor-centred, Goddard heads straight to the DJ booth on this one - sweet atmospherics, tense beats and one hell of a bassline make this into an all-out weapon for all you head-nodding record spinners. It's great to see Goddard back on top form, too!
Review: Popoviciu debuts on Poker Flat with a typically expansive affair. The title track starts off as a standard tribal groove, but the Romanian producer quickly introduces a throbbing bass, surging chords and a soulful vocal sample. The end result is a deep but ominous club groove. He follows a similar path on "Stay", but this time the bass is heavier and more menacing and the melodies - this time articulated by a shiny synth - more breezy. In between these polar opposites, Popoviciu drops another evocative vocal. The more tracky "Paper Box" rounds out this excellent release.
