Re Bulele EP
Re Bulele (feat Fox Meropa) - (8:21) 123 BPM
Re Bulele (FNX Omar remix feat Fox Meropa) - (6:18) 121 BPM
Review: Aroop Roy serves up two new slices of his trademark globally-inspired deep house. 'Re Bulele' (feat Fox Meropa) is, in its Original form, a lilting affair with rolling beats and a simple electronic bassline topped with a smooth, melodic, Afro-style male vocal and, as the track progresses, sweeping synth washes. The accompanying FNX Omar Remix is slightly darker and more ominous in feel, with the track's electronic elements brought further to the fore and the vocal applied more sparingly, while the EP's completed by 'Mama Mwana', which has a similarly gentle, laidback feel to the title track but is more organic in its instrumentation.

KaySoul - "Icey Baby" (vocal mix feat Mr. Beale) - (5:57) 121 BPM
SizLeCaude - "Far Apart" - (5:54) 120 BPM
Review: Freerange Recordings takes us on a vibrant exploration of Johannesburg's musical landscape with "City To City: Johannesburg," a compilation featuring various artists. This diverse collection pulsates with energy, capturing the spirit of the city's dynamic and ever-evolving music scene. The journey begins with "Icey Baby" by KaySoul, a track that lives up to its name. Soulful vocals and sensitive production create a chilled and introspective atmosphere. SculpturedMusic takes a turn with "Midnight Talk," their signature deft pads shimmering over soft kicks, painting a sonic picture of a late-night cityscape. Then SizLeCaude's "Far Apart" injects a dose of energy with its driving bassline. With "Love (Kinda Thing)," Radic The Myth injects the compilation with his signature sound - harmonically rich and punchy house music that reflects his unique approach to the genre. To close the EP, Persie Botta and Jade Nickels team up on "They Never Loved Us," offering a quintessential slice of Joburg-style deep house: lush pads, powerful groove and a touch of melancholy weave through the track, leaving a lasting impression.

Latent Magic EP
There It Is - (5:40) 124 BPM
Review: Kiwi house queen Philippa returns to Freerange Records - the label which released her fine debut EP in 2022 - following an equally inspired outing on Slothboogie earlier in the year. She begins in fine fashion with 'Hold', and slow building affair in which sparkling, sunrise-ready piano stabs and swirling synth strings rise above a jaunty, tactile bassline and unfussy deep house drums, before opting for a deliciously loved up vibe on the string-laden, life-affirming stomp of 'Latent Magic'. To round of a brilliant EP, the Berlin-based New Zealander serves up 'There It Is', where echoing vocal snippets and bold piano stabs ride a St Germain style jazz-house groove.

Nuphoria EP
Wake Up (feat Frederick) - (5:48) 122 BPM Hot
Review: French producer Simbad spent years living in London, immersing himself in the broken beat and soul-soaked house scenes. These days he's based in Cape Town, South Africa, immersing himself in the Rainbow Nation's unique house culture. If this fine EP for Freerange is anything to go by, the move has certainly provided new impetus to his productions. For proof, check the two contrasting versions of 'Nuphoria': the spiralling, stargazing, synth-laden techno original mix (a breathlessly brilliant concoction that also boasts a spell-binding breakdown), and the sub-heavy soundscape house of the 'Pretoria Mix'. Elsewhere, South African singer Sanele guests on the twinkling, off-kilter deep house soul of 'Dream', and mic man Frederick appears on the percussive, loose and lovely 'Wake Up'.

Heat Makes Sense EP
Heat Makes Sense - (6:30) 123 BPM Hot
Review: Three years on from his last outing on Freerange, sometime No Regular Play member (and Wolf+Lamb contributor) Greg Paulus returns to the imprint, and this time he's got regular collaborator Taylor Bense in tow. There's a hard-wired, P-funk-meets-chunky house feel to storming opener 'Heat Makes Sense', where starry-eyed vocal snippets and eight-bit noises jostle for attention with Bootsy bass, while 'Switch' (featuring spoken word vocals from Stimulus) is a future deep house classic in the making. Big $exy lends a hand on the Chicago boompty-inspired peak-time sleaze of 'Marino', while the Martinez Brothers' edit of 'Do You Love Me' is a chunky, bumping and jazz-flecked soulful deep house treat.

The Half Full EP
Autonomic Journeys - (7:22) 124 BPM Hot
San Guine - (7:23) 124 BPM
Review: Having previously remixed each other, it was only a matter of time before the legendary Josh Wink popped up on Jimpster's similarly storied Freerange Records imprint. Apparently recorded with summer spins in mind, 'The Half Full EP' combines elements familiar from previous Wink workouts - acid lines aplenty, trippy electronics and driving drums - with a big dose of sci-fi stargazing and sun-soaked deep house tropes. Our pick of the bunch is lead cut 'Automatic Journeys', an acid-fired deep house driver with a dash of Detroit machine soul thrown in, though the tribal-tinged, TB-303-powered trip that is 'Pan Gloss' pushes it close. The deliciously deep, warm and woozy 'San Guine' completes a rock-solid package.

Figure Of Speech - (6:39) 120 BPM Hot
Review: Amsterdam's Detroit Swindle duo pair up and land back on Jimpster's Freerange imprint...and you know that means swinging, dusty house grooves for all! The title track "Figure Of Speech" is a pleasant, beautifully Detroitified house swayer featuring some heavy chord action, and "Victoria's Secret" adds a further layer of beat-swing around cheery melodies for the summer haze. Flip the disc and you got "Live At The Cosmic Carnival", a disco-fuelled house anthem and another floor-filler to fill Swindle's ever-impressive catalogue.

Review: It's been some two years since the release of German producer Manuel Tur's last LP, the bizarrely titled Swans Reflecting Elephants. While that set was largely dark, moody and atmospheric, there's a cozy positivity about much of this belated follow-up. While there are hypnotic, late night moments (see the after party wonkiness of "About to Fall"), as a while Es Cub is a much more upbeat affair. Check, for example, the drifting Balearic house brilliance of "EL Soplo", whose extended breakdown serves to highlight the brilliance of Tur's yearning, metronomic groove, and the dizzyingly bright "AraAnam". Amongst the heartwarming deep house explorations you'll also find "Es Dub", a thrillingly sparse and atmospheric chunk of slow house that more than lives up to its name.

Review: Put up the bunting: Jimpster's back! The Freerange Records co-founder has been rather quiet of late, with the "One EP" delivering his first new material for nearly two years. Predictably he's in fine form from the off, successfully joining forces with Osunlade collaborator Casamena on brilliant opener "One" - a jaunty, loose-limbed fusion of jumpy broken house beats, huggable chords, sweaty percussion fills and a post hip-house spoken word vocal from the track's guest star. Detroiter Waajeed re-frames it as a bass-heavy chunk of starry deep house positivity before Jimspter offers up bonus cut "The Way It Is", a slightly more rubbery jog through ear catching deep house positivity rich in jazzy piano solos and squeezable synth bass.

Something Special EP
Fresh 16 - (5:44) 124 BPM
Blue Pill - (7:29) 122 BPM Hot
Review: After two years away in which they offered up a wealth of releases on other top-tier labels (Pets Recordings, Ton Tonics and Madhouse included), Italian twosome Black Loops returns to Freerange Recordings with another must-check EP. As usual, there's far more hits than misses. We're particularly enjoying the loose-limbed deep house funk of opener "Fresh 16", a canny combination of chunky, funky grooves, classic Italian house chords and synthesizer melodies so sunny they might burn your skin if you wallow in the track's majesty too long. Elsewhere, "Something Special" - named in honour of the Peech Boys track it sneakily samples - is a pitch-perfect chunk of swinging New Jersey deep house warmth, while "Blue Pill" adds a tech-house touch to a vintage Italian style chunk of glassy-eyed, loved-up deepness.

Back Of My Heart (Patrice Scott remix) - (7:19) 120 BPM
Review: Given his track record, it's something of a surprise to find that this is Crackazat's first outing on Freerange. It's less of a surprise to discover that it's a superb EP. Lead cut "Valentine" is little less than sublime: a warm and floor-friendly mixture of bumping US garage influenced drums, jaunty jazz-funk bass, spacey synthesizer flourishes and jazzy piano motifs that veer from poignant and heart-aching to celebratory and rush-inducing in the space of five minutes. "Back Of My Heart" is a bleeping skip through bass-heavy deep house while "I Heard You" is a bluesy and jazzy house number straight out of the top drawer. If that's not enough to get you drooling, Patrice Scott's remix of "Back Of My Heart" is a warm, loose and languid intergalactic treat.

Review: It's testament to Ben J Worrall's skill as a musician and producer that his soulful, jazzy deep house productions can be mentioned in the same breath as those by all-time-greats Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Yet unlike those producers, he's yet to deliver an album so good that it will be considered a true great. Until now, that is. Evergreen, his first set for Freerange, is simply sublime: an unapologetically soulful, life-affirming set that blends effortlessly brilliant vocals and jazz-funk inspired instrumentation (think incredible horn arrangements, smooth bass, twinkling keys and glistening guitars) with the luscious, often Latin-tinged deep house beats that have long been his calling card. If there's any justice, it will end of being regarded as one of the electronic albums of 2022.

Echoes In My Head - (6:53) 124 BPM Hot
Echoes In My Head (Head In The Clouds mix) - (5:44) 123 BPM
Review: Jamie "Jimpster" Odell has long been one of deep house's more positive producers, with much of his material being as musically delicious as it is dancefloor ready. Even so, new single "Smile For a While" is particularly positive. Built around twinkling, eyes-closed vocal and harp samples, the track sees Odell layer waves of colourful electronics and kaleidoscopic chords atop a chunky bassline and snappy deep house beats. It comes accompanied by two takes on "Echoes in My Head". We get an original version that adds Osunlade style live percussion, ambient techno chords and spacey synths to a driving, retro-futurist house groove, and a Larry Heard-esque revision (the "Head in the Clouds Mix") that's as positive and rush-inducing as they come.

Wirefire - (6:18) 122 BPM

Review: Comprised of German deep house veterans Manuel Tur and Adrian Hoffmann, Clavis is the new name they release under in tandem with their Amberroom project - where they collaborate with Ramin Nouyan. Once again it's for Jimpster's ever reliable Freerange, following up last year's terrific Boyd EP. The Wirefire EP sees them continue on with their deep, Afro-inspired electronic grooves of previous releases, which is evident on the euphoric dance floor narrative of "Camira". Elsewhere, there's the moody minimal tech house chugger that is the title track, reminiscent of each respective producer's style back in the mid noughties. Finally, they end things on a glassy eyed and bittersweet note on the emotive deep house epic "Matinada".

Tired Up - (5:49) 121 BPM Hot
Heaven & Hell - (5:06) 121 BPM
Lifestreams - (5:19) 120 BPM
Review: After spending much of the first half of the last decade quietly building up a reputation, Simon Hinter has been almost silent since 2016. It's therefore heartening to see him finally return to action with arguably his most high-profile release yet: a fresh EP on the effervescent Freerange Records. All four tracks are suitably strong, particularly thickset, bass-heavy opener "Tired Up", whose explicit, female spoken word vocals, filtered loops, chunky bass and jazzy flourishes reminded us a little of the work of Thatmanmonkz. "Heaven & Hell" offers a sparkling, life-affirming take on glassy-eyed deep house hedonism, while "Lifestreams" adds some welcome nods to jazz-funk and disco while retaining a classy house vibe. To round things off, Hinter returns to a jazzier deep house flex on "Looking Back".

Review: Crackazat, a Bristol lad who's now based in Sweden, has built up a strong following via releases on labels such as Futureboogie and Local Talk over the past 10 years or so, and can count the likes of Dave Lee and Floating Points among his higher-profile supporters. 'Everybody Talks About It' finds him in 80s soul/boogie territory before being given a more uptempo and garage-y refix by Cody Currie, while 'I'm Easy' starts out as a hazy soul shuffler before the accompanying Dub takes us into small hours dreamaway territory. Replete as ever with Crackazat's trademark jazzbo craftsmanship, there are some seriously classy vibes contained herein - one for the connoisseurs!

Sacrifice - (6:33) 120 BPM
Review: Johannesburg-based producer Bruce Loko prides himself on making music that's "far from bog-standard South African house". Here he makes his debut on Freerange with a fine four-track EP that expertly showcases his trademark sound. Leading the line is "The Black Pearl", a spacey, woozy, quietly picturesque and surprisingly hazy chunk of atmospheric deep house/tech-house fusion. "Sacrifice" is, if anything, even more dusty, deep and spaced out - all minor key, lo-fi synth melodies and broken house drums - while "Sunset Over Water" duly lives up to its evocative title. FKA Mash provides a breezier, warmer "Glitch Dub" of the same cut that's arguably even better than Loko's sublime original mix.

Floyd (remix) - (6:00) 123 BPM
Review: Since first joining forces as Clavis back in 2015, Manuel Tur and Adrian Hoffmann have delivered occasional EPs of high quality, dancefloor-focused deepness. Here the German duo return to regular home Freerange with their first outing of 2019. We're not sure whether title track "Boyd" was written in tribute to the late, great New York house legend Boyd Jarvis, but with its jammed-out bass, rushing piano riffs and proto-house style synthesizer solos it could well have been (even if the groove underpinning it all is a touch darker and more tech-tinged than the former Timmy Regisford collaborator would have come up with himself). Either way, it's superb. The package also contains two versions of "Floyd": the druggy, proto-house-meets-Paul Woolford's "Erotic Discourse" flex of the original take, and a slightly more up-lifting and dreamy "Remix" that adds some sparkling synths and choral vocals into the mix with impressive results.

Review: Since first pricking our collective consciousness back in 2011, Adam Ratana, Preslav Lefterov and Thomas Cox's Pittsborugh Track Authority project has gone from strength to strength. Following a wealth of releases on Further Records, Argot, Rotating Souls and their own Pittsburgh Tracks imprint, they've been snapped up by Jimpster's Freerange Records. This label debut features a trio of tasty treats. Opener "Your Situation" is a breezy delight, with classic sounding synthesized strings and bubbling electronic riffs smothering a snappy groove. "RT28" is a deeper and groovier, Jus-Ed influenced affair that features some brilliantly spacey synth solos, while "Gold Trim" is a surprisingly live-sounding fusion of loose, organic drums, cascading flute solos and smooth boogie bass.

Dance Like Nobody's Watching (Black Madonna We Still Believe remix) - (6:56) 120 BPM
Review: Hitting that funked-up 90s vibe like it ain't no thang, Roberto Rodriguez's turn on Freerange bumps and flexes in all the right ways, slamming in some cheery piano chords and DX7 organ riffs while the drums swing jauntily on "Dance Like Nobody's Watching". With the high register notes coming on like Glenn Underground, there's a feeling of uplifting jazz woven into the bright and bashy elements. "Oxymoron" heads for a deeper territory, plying dubby chords and diva vocal snippets amidst a chunky beat with some sly MIDI sax thrown in for good measure. Black Madonna turn out a remix of the title track that tempers the boundless energy of the original by stripping things down and letting a filter take control of the central piano riff.

City Movements EP (Explicit)
Breezy Point - (7:54) 120 BPM Hot
Do You Love Me? - (5:30) 123 BPM
Mr. Lee's Trophy Theme - (5:54) 122 BPM
Review: Having initially made his name as an associate of the Visionquest crew, producer/trumpeter Greg Paulus has spent the last few years building up a quietly impressive catalogue of EPs. The City of Movements EP sees him appear on Freerange Records for the very first time via a three-tracker that's slicker and more densely layered than anything he'd done before. For proof, check impeccable EP closing cut 'Mr Lee's Trophy Theme', a gorgeous and immersive mixture of drowsy chords, slowly shifting electronic motifs, crunchy beats, meandering trumpet solos and eyes-closed vocals. Further proof arrives via classically bouncy deep house opener 'Breezy Point', where he speaks and sings seductively over dirty analogue bass and heavenly electric piano motifs, and the jazzy, soul-fired deep house warmth of 'Do You Love Me'.

Riven Reminiscences EP
Riven Reminiscences (original mix) - (9:22) 123 BPM Hot
Together (original mix) - (8:01) 122 BPM
Riven Reminiscences (San Soda remix) - (5:53) 122 BPM
Review: Having previously starred for Freerange in 2010, Andre Lodemann returns to Jimpster's 15-year-old imprint for another burst of blissful deep house with a dancefloor twist. While slowly building lead cut "Riven Reminiscences" will get most of the plaudits - and dancefloor plays - its bonus cut "Together" that really sparkles. Featuring dubbier percussion, bubbling electronics and, crucially, weary pianos, it's a truly heart-aching fusion of tear-jerking deep house elements. There's also a delightfully upbeat remix of the title track from San Soda, who successfully mixes jacking and deep elements with some seriously hooky piano riffs and electronic stabs.

Review: When it comes to musically expansive, jazz-flecked deep and soulful house, Ben J Worrall AKA Crackazat is in a league of his own. That's been the case for a while, but it's proven beyond doubt by his latest outing on Freerange Records. Title track 'Beacon of Light' is simply sublime: a bouncy, soul-soaked slab of jazz-house/deep house fusion blessed with exquisite musicianship and some superb lead vocals. Equally as impressive is Ron Trent's epic, near 10-minute remix of 'Simple Things', which is every bit as delightful, jazzy and musically intricate as you'd expect from the Chicago deep house legend. Elsewhere across the EP, the 'Maritime Dub' of 'Beacon of Light' transforms the track into a driving but rolling deep house bumper and 'Evergreen' is a sun-kissed future deep house classic.
