Hardcore - (7:37) 131 BPM
Review: Pilot is one of the many labels in the orbit of the unstoppable production force that is Burnski aka garage innovator Instinct. It deals in proper club tackle from a wide range of artists and here it is Hatori Hanso that offers up the brilliance. 'Low Rider' opens with a very familiar hook and some deep, deep half sung, half spoken vocal, before nimble live bass, brass and crispy breakbeats bring the party. 'Cherry On The Cake' is a lively house cut littered with James Brown samples and screwy synths that keep the pressure on. 'Don't Know Why?' closes proceedings in a more cool and breezy tech house mood with sci-fi designs, to complete a set of varied but reliable frug-starters.

Hillbrow 2 - (2:06) 131 BPM
Telephone - (2:04) 131 BPM
Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was, from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Review: If you're reading this then you will know that Instinct is one of the UK's powerhouse garage labels. Run by Burnski aka James Burnham it deals in serious tackle for rude boys and nasty girls. The drums hit hard, the reversed bassline burn goose old school cool and there gun finger salutes come thick and fast throughout this EP from Mance. 'Checkpoint' opens with the dusty drum shuffles and bulbous bass, then 'The Going Is Rough' is a little more soulful and sweet with its rolling basslines and silky pads. 'Beat 93' closes down with a seriously OG garage sound that takes you back to the mid-90s.

Summer Nights (original mix) - (6:39) 134 BPM
Review: Belarusian producer Four Walls is back - this time around he finds himself on the new Ultraworld Records imprint from DJ Craft. This one kicks off with the lush prog house and silky synth arps of 'Mind Charger' which soon takes you to the stars. 'Metamorphosis' is a more raw-edged and acid-laced techno stomper for peak time action and 'Summer Nights' is a bubbling, elastic tapestry of new age overtones, thudding kicks and trance-tinged pads. A remix by Toronto-based Pletnev adds another dimension to this club-ready EP.

Codec - (3:52) 133 BPM
Review: Next up on Perfect NL, an absolute stonker of a drop from the one and only Arkham Sound, joining forces with TMSV to deliver a mind-numbing dip into the subby pool. We open up with TMSV's remix of 'Heat Mandatory', a digital masterpiece in gritty synth lines and warbling LFO design, followed by the faster paced, jungle-influenced pad textures and eski licks of 'Elseworlds' alongside 'Hostile Universe', which again slams together heavily reese-driven arrangement for maximum impact. From here, more synthetic wizardry as the electrifying drives and metallic percussive slaps of 'Codec' turn the pressure towards a more dubstep-inspired field, followed by square-wave driven depths of the original 'Heat's Mandatory'. Top work!

Life's A Journey - (3:54) 92 BPM
Review: There've been some fine sounds emerging from Scruniversal's sonic laboratories of late and this latest six-track missive from La Riff is a case in point. The EP opens with the atmospheric 'Jazz Reflections' - just imagine you're putting away bourbon on the rocks with John Shaft in a 124th Street dive bar - then moves on through the dense, aquatic and soundscape-y 'L'Amour', the moody, hypnotic groove of the sleaze-tastic 'Flash Funk', the avant-garde soul-jazz of the title track, the absolute stone-cold be303bop killer that is 'Acid At The Piano Bar' and then, finally, the blissed-out, post-excess anthem-in-waiting 'Dark Matter'. Varied, rewarding and supremely checkable.

Review: Oceanvs Orientalis is Safak Ozkutle and the artist's latest album, Portrait of the Obscure via Damian Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels label delves well into the depths of Istanbul-based producer musical universe. Building on three standout singles released over the past four months, this nine-track LP adds further spotlight to his ability to blend diverse cultural influences into sonically inspiring, dance music landscapes. From the enchanting synthscapes of "Pulse Antique" to the haunting atmospheres of "IL Lupo" featuring Tooker, each track offers a unique exploration of experimental house sounds. Collaborations with artists like Idil Mese and Tilahun Gessesse add layers of depth to the album, making it a must-listen for fans of vibrant electronic music.

I'd Love To Do It - (7:18) 134 BPM
Review: Anastasia Kristensen debuts on Turbo with an unusual take on techno. "I'd Love To Do It" revolves around a grinding, ebm rhythm and features breathy vocals. It represents a new direction for Kristensen and is unlike most contemporary club tracks. She gets back to what she is best known for with the title track, where a sheet metal rhythm, pounding kicks and a gut-busting bass are to the fore. Meanwhile, "Paradox & Puzzle" is a more stripped back affair. Populated by bleeps and raw analogue riffs, it may be a million miles away from "I'd Love To..." but it still has the desired effect.

Revolution - (5:28) 130 BPM
Review: After a lengthy hiatus, Sunka returns to All We Need. "Revolution" is led by a snaking bass and the interplay between two vocal samples - one intoning the track name, the other an understated soulful tone. The combination makes for a soulful, uplifting track. "Self-Hypnotic Tape" is moodier, with Sunka dropping a growling bass and incessant acid tweaks. "OSSS" sees him change direction; based on a swinging groove, it features celebratory ragga vocals and an uplifting melodic hook. Last but certainly not least is "Longin 2 Linga", where Sunka drops a squelchy bass and breathless vocal samples. It makes for a rousing finale to this feel-good release.

Computer Madness - "Traveling To The Planet Rock" - (6:17) 133 BPM
Corbi - "Wave Machine" - (6:59) 130 BPM
Review: Greta Levska continues her formidable run on Get Physical Music with an Ibiza compilation sampler which follows her 2023 album Flex (for Poker Flat) and EPs for GP like Club Jupiter and Cala Da Bronx. On display here are tracks by JoJo in "Eclipse" with its euphoric progressive house and trance style, to Madd Rod's '80s inspired drive time "Jumping Jacks". Furthermore there's some electro B-boy bangers in Computer Madness' "Travelling Back To The Planet Rock" - NYC in the house - which falls alongside Hammer's disco-inspired "Red Alert". With all that mentioned, there's no overlooking Levska's own "Amps On Route One" - the inspired opener to her piping hot Ibiza mix.

Review: Next up from the infamous Slow Roast collective, a tidy dive into the beautiful world of Baile Funk, with 12 sumptuous originals to burn the dust off any dancefloor. Featuring the likes of Sec, A-Par, DJ Paulinho Mondi, Craze, Omoy & Karan! Across different combinations, this is a compilation that showcases not only how exciting the sound can be, but the range that now exists within its walls. Our highlights include the super abstract melodic switchups of 'DUKEYBAILE' from JWLS, alongside the super unpredictable percussive pounces of 'MASSIVE' from LowParse. Awesome work.

Freak Like U (Whip mix) - (6:01) 134 BPM
Review: Mr. Ho's "Freak Like U (Whip Mix)" - a remix that injects fresh energy into Masarima's already potent proto-house anthem "Freak Like U." This isn't your typical remix aiming for dancefloor dominance. Instead, Mr. Ho takes an "alternative route to Rimini," a playful nod to the Italian coastal town synonymous with infectious Italo-house sounds. The track retains the infectious energy of the original, but with a distinct acid house twist.

Streets Of Calamero
Desert Synth - (4:57) 93 BPM
Review: Aurore 404 launches into 2024 with an exciting new digital solo EP series led by French artist Disset! His inaugural 5-track EP, accompanied by a remix from Harry Wills, introduces listeners to the vivid universe of Calamero, a fictional city brought to life through Disset's melody making. With bass lines as sturdy foundations, drums reverberating through urban streets, and notes weaving together like inhabitants of this imaginary metropolis, each track offers a sonic glimpse into different facets of Calamero. Disset pulls up his retrofuturism, merging modern electronic machinery with samples of traditional instruments, tribal percussion, and ambient sounds, resulting in a a city filled with romance, nostalgia and innovation.

Cantankerous - (4:20) 134 BPM
Speciality - (3:38) 134 BPM
Review: The Lost City Archives team have pulled together a real winner for their 10th edition of the 'Lost City Archives' series, welcoming Ash Brown with three sumptuous subby bubblers. First up, the eerie reverberations and clustered drum stutters of 'Cantankerous' weave themselves into play, focussing heavily on skittish sub sweeps and delicate percussion to match. Next, 'Star Gazing' brings us an ethereal soundscape of icey synthetics and heavily affected vocal processing, before 'Speciality' thickens the mix a bit with more traditional 2-stepping rhythms and harder hitting drum pumps to match.

Fragments - (6:21) 132 BPM
Review: Hot on the heels of Sciahri's EP, comes Giuseppe Di Leria's debut for Monument. Spread across eight tracks, Multiverso sees the prolific producer explore abstract, at times psychedelic territories while also delivering deadly effective dance floor techno. The hypnotic drones of "Avantgarde" unravel over an understated rhythm, while on "Ultrasuoni" waves of noise are fused with dense kicks. Di Leria opts for a more direct approach with the angular rhythms of "Bionic" and the reduced, tonal "Fragments". In contrast, the frazzled sound scapes of "Tuono" and the humming, industrial tones of "Galassia" serves as a reminder that he brings a deeply experimental approach his music.

Brain Dead - (5:30) 132 BPM
Review: Chicago house producer Tai Davis - who made his name with a series of 'Classic Chicago House Remakes' EPs over a decade ago - pays homage to the Windy City's musical heritage with four tracks that prove there's plenty of life in the old acid dog yet! Up first is 'Brain Dead', which ain't much more than a throbbing, pulsating groove underpinning some serious cut-off and resonance abuse. 'Whop' rocks slightly more straight-up, harder-driving 4/4s and gets bleepier and bleepier as it goes on, 'That Acid' brings the tripped-out, Adonis-like vibes and finally 'Fusion' merges acid with Larry Heard-style deepness to play us out.

Review: Staying true to its mandate of releasing killer underground techno, Dynamic Reflection drops this diverse compilation. The Plant Worker & DIAPO's "Grogrott" and RNGD's "Radiation" are both stripped back, linear grooves, while contributions from Deas and the Linear System's hypnotic tonal "Void Perspective" represent a deeper side to the Dynamic Reflection canon. Pyramidal Decode raises the tempo - and intensity level - on the cavernous "Optical Noise", where doubled-up claps underpin dubby builds. There is a different aesthetic at play on the muddy bass and dense kicks of Gabriel D'Or & Bordoy's "G13", while Korben Nice represents the classic Dynamic Reflection techno sound with the bruising, percussion and coruscating filters of "Orchestra".

Squal G - "Waiting 4U" - (8:59) 130 BPM
Review: Laurent Garnier and Scan X's label does a great job in showcasing emerging and established talent, and this split release is no exception. The brilliantly named Return Of The Luddites deliver the raw electro-techno of "Scream Into The Darkness". In stark contrast, Detroit techno-inspired tracks also loom large, courtesy of Skatman's string-filled "Tribute To A Dancefloor" and Squal G's more ominous "Waiting 4U". Mirroring Garnier's own wide-ranging tastes, the release also features the call and response hip-hop/drum'n'bass crossover of Joaquim Plossu, Salem Focus and Phoebe Train's "Theory Of The Tide". Taking the tempo down, Yes Basketball's "Next" is a slowed down, bugged out beatsy track.

Jakobin - "Skulpt" - (6:45) 134 BPM
Review: As the matter-or-fact title makes clear, this expansive affair brings together a wealth of tracks from two of Luv Shack's most prolific and consistent artists, Jakobin and ROCTIV. The former steps up first with a trio of tracks. Of these, it's opener 'Drawan' - a deliciously trippy and mind-mangling slab of psychedelic house rich in TB-303 acid bass, fizzing electronics and ghostly chords - that most impresses, though IDM-goes-breakbeat bubbler 'Skulpt' and the deep and trippy 'Octagonal Tribe' are also excellent. ROCTIV drops four tracks, flitting between bass-heavy, acid-flecked breakbeat ('Frenezy', 'Living Art'), re-born early 90s progressive house/nu-disco fusion ('No More Room In Hell') and sub-heavy psychedelic sleaziness ('The Confidence').
