Grits - (4:47) 123 BPM Hot
23h - (4:30) 123 BPM
Review: Umbo (Croatia's Mario Lovakovic) has chalked up releases on Timewarp and Kraak and now comes to Germany's Resense with two re-edits of tracks from Chess, Sun Records and Stax veteran Little Milton's 1969 'Grits And Groceries' album. That album's title track, here reworked as 'Grits', was written by Titus Turner in 1955 as 'Mona Lisa Was A Man' and has been recorded by many blues, soul and R&B artists under a variety of titles over the years; '23h' is much less confusing, being simply the new name for 'Twenty-Three Hours'. Anyway, suffice to say the sheer power of the late R&B legend's voice makes either a cert on funk and soul floors!

The Deep Disco Funk Nuggets Volume 01
Papa Was A Rolling Stone (Philly Vanilli extended remix) - (15:33) 122 BPM
Review: Germany's Philly Vanilli has been around since forever, it seems, but to these ears - and they're ears that have reviewed plenty of his previous releases for this very website - this new set of reworks for Deep Disco Edits is the best work he's turned out so far. He's working with some very well-known source tracks here, so there's no point insulting your intelligence by enumerating them: suffice to say that somehow he's managed to tease the funk out of these much-loved classics in a way that, in some cases, even the original artists didn't manage. Ohio Players' 'Love Rollercoaster' was, admittedly, always a personal fave of yours truly but in PV's hands it becomes a truly exceptional 10 minutes of sheer funk joy, while his reworkings of Marvin, Kool & The Gang and The Temptations are equally impressive. Essential!

Katakana Edits Vol 62
Hawwis - "Descarga" - (5:09) 123 BPM
Review: 62 collections deep and still blazing up any party in a 1000 mile radius; Katakana deliver yet another fun and funk-fuelled package. All laced with a heavy rhythmic theme, attention to groove detail is paid throughout as we're treated to range of classic and deeply dug edits. "Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.

Review: When Andy Bull AKA Bully Boy launched the Act of Sedition label a couple of years back his aim was to release "the finest 45 edits" on seven-inch double-packs. It's something of a surprise, then, to see the label land on digital download with a sprawling collection of previously vinyl-only reworks and bonus edits. Expect a gloriously vibrant and floor-friendly mixture of gospel-tinged psychedelic soul (Jimi Hendrix's "Freedom"), Clav-happy disco-funk squelch (Disco-Tech's "Assassination"), sweet disco sing-alongs (SanFrankDisko's "Get It Right"), sweaty punk-funk/dub disco heaviness ("Cavern Dance" by V's Edits), high octane disco-camp (Mighty Mouse's cheerfully silly "Got To Have Nothing") and much more besides.

Review: When operating under the V's Edits alias, re-edit maestro Valique can always be relied upon to bring the goods. It's little surprise, then, to find out that his latest collection of fresh cut-jobs - an epic affair featuring no less than 24 tracks - is packed to the rafters with high-grade fare. We don't have enough space to list all of the highlights, but we'd suggest checking out his rolling revision of Lee Dorsey's "Night People", the low-slung disco-funk heaviness of the Brass Construction rework ("Gotta Do It"), the intergalactic disco deepness of the Marvin Gaye revision ("Funky Space"), the lightly tooled-up, slowly unfurling take on Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica" and the sweeping, string-laden disco brilliance of "Miracle (V's Edit)".

Katakana Edits Vol 130
Itch & Scratch - (3:22) 120 BPM
Review: At the controls for Vol 130 in the 'Katakana Edits' series is Goji Berry, who returns to the stable after previously helming Vols 69 and 93 and appearing on several earlier editions. First to come under his scalpel is 'Going Back To My Roots': the track's perhaps best known to most via covers from Richie Havens, Odyssey or FPI Project, but it's Motown legend Lamont Dozier's 1977 original that gets the treatment here. That's followed by the raw, blistering funk of Rufus Thomas's 'Itch And Scratch' from 1972; put together, the two tracks add up to one small but perfectly formed package.

Katakana Edits Vol 15
Get Up Brother - (5:24) 120 BPM
Review: The ever-reliable Katakana Edits crew returns, this time with a quartet of goodtime funk reworks from Berlin-based edit fiend Voodoocuts. James Brown gets a going over on "Voodoosexmachine", a flute-laden re-cut of the Godfather of Funk's best-known tune. Another familiar favourite - check the snaking sax line, as sampled by The 45 King on B-Boy classic "The 900 Number" - is given a dancefloor touch-up on "Blow Ya Woopie", while "Get Up Brother" turns a cover version of Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" into a deep, bassy, fluid house jam. Finally, there's more bumpin' rare funk business on the ludicrously bottom-heavy "Stay Excited".

Review: This decidedly epic collection marks Katakana Edits's first foray into the compilation market and is designed as a "best-of" style outing. It boasts 30 reworks, mash-ups, remixes and re-edits gleamed from the prolific imprint's first 50 singles. Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

Review: There ain't no party like a Tru Funk Nu Party! Seriously now, not even S-Club could match the supersize funk flavours this label have been dishing up this year, and this latest compendium is no exception. Highlights include Sammy Senior's overhaul of Nelly's "Country Grammar", Lakeshore Drive's super laidback Q-Tipper "Funk'n Outta Bounds" and DJ Axe's percussion heavy sample-fest "Funky Town". Tru Funk have excelled themselves on this package.

Lets All Chant (Nobody Move The Body mix) - (8:35) 122 BPM
Played by: Krystal Klear
Review: To our mind, Fabiolous Barker is one of the most dependable re-editors around. For proof, check his previous releases for the likes of Midnight Riot, Alpaca Edits and Disco Fruit, and of course his latest outing on regular home Katakana Edits. "Let's All Chant (Everybody Move The Body Mix)" sees him making merry with a bold, sing-along disco workout rich in electronic bass, Chic style guitars, energy-packed handclaps and rolling beats. It sounds like a peak-time anthem in the making. On the virtual reverse you'll find the "Nobody Move The Mix" version), which strips out a lot of the vocals, offers a stripped-back and heavy build-up, and surprisingly showcases a clarinet solo. It works well, of course, though it's not quite as spine tingling as the other mix.

Blame It On The Bossa Boogie - (3:30) 120 BPM
Review: Belgian producer Buscemi has been around the block a few times over the years, during a career that started out during the mid 1990s. This two tracker for Resense sees him in full on party mode. Lead cut "It Aint Right No No" fuses samples from a classic swing-era jazz cut with hard bossa beats and growling bass stabs for guaranteed party thrills. Even better is "Blame It On The Bossa Boogie", an impeccable mash-up of sweaty jazz breaks, bossa percussion, cowbells and select samples from, you guessed it, the Jacksons' "Blame It On The Boogie". Really, it should be a mess, but it's actually rather good - and guaranteed to get 'em going out on the 'floor.

Review: More scrumptious sonics from the Polish party crew, the fourth volume of Tru Funk's "Tasty Beats" series sees old friends and new lay down five sizzling jams that will guarantee unified butt-shaking. New faces Bruno Borlone and Boogie Mike lay down a Spanish rap funk jam "I Like The Party", DJ Axe pays homage to Nice & Smooth and Curtis Blow, ElectroGorilla reach for the lazers with the euphoric breakbeat flexor "Funky Beast" and Rory Hoy and Saxon Scoundrels get busy on a classic rock and swashbuckling drum vibe with "Bouncin & Rockin". Funky Stuff - (5:24) 120 BPM
Review: Within the world of breakbeat, there are few names held in such high regard as Morlack, who continues his incredibly consistent run this time around with a five track package on Funk Blasters, that being the fourth edition of his 'Cheeky Edits' series. We begin with the 80's inspired drum smashes and stripped back vocal sampling on 'Breakin', followed by groovy bass guitar licks of 'Telepathy' and pulsating retro synth work of 'Ur Life'. The quality levels remain incredibly high throughout as we then take in 'Da Bomb', a disco-ready roller decorated with glistening guitar riffs and a well sampled chorus block, before the brick wall drum smashes of 'Funky Stuff' see us out in style. Excellent work.

Here, he plays it straight disco with a funky rock edge on this new release for Grits N Gravy. The lead song "Monkey Magic" evens sounds a little like 10cc at times, while "Chilling Out" has its own Yacht Rock-meets-the Gap Band thang going on. Review: Oh dear, the Katakana edits are back once again, and that means pure and vibrant disco-house vibes for all shapes and sizes. Fray Bentos returns in fine style with two cuts, starting with the bumpy, utterly groovy "Body Down", followed by the deeper, more majestic jazzy feel of "Night Giver" - oh, those strings! DJ Laurel's up next, bringing through some proper stylish funkiness with "Yes I Know", sampling the late, great Pino Daniele on the vocals, while "More Shame" goes for the tribal touch, pushing through some lovely horns and a magnificent sway of seductive trumpets for that sexy feel. Review: High-grade schmokin' disco is on the menu here on the latest Katakana Edits installment, courtesy of Fabiolous Barker and Amir Perry. The former flexes his re-edit muscle over three beguiling tracks: the frisky funk fizz of the housey "Sing", the sultry low-slung "NightGrooving" and the punchy Flash & The Pan 80s rework "Why D'Ya Run Away". Anticipation - (5:08) 120 BPM Hot
Review: French producer Morlack is at the controls for this latest installment in the 'Katakana Edits' series. On 'Way Out' he reworks a 1982 Steve Arrington track of the same name, while 'Anticipation' mines Mtume's 'Anticipatin'' from 1980, so that's your boogie lovers covered, while those in search of rawer funk pleasures can head for 'Some Dues To Pay', which revisits a 1971 cut from Little Beaver AKA Willie Hale. Elsewhere, 'Zouk La Se' draws on the 1984 track by Guadeloupean band Kassav' which spawned the 'zouk' dance craze in Latin America and the Caribbean, while 'Zoulous' was originally a 1988 French pop hit for female duo Les 36'15.

Review: It's not for us to second-guess the motivations of others, but more recent installments in the Lolita series do seem to have eschewed the "anything goes" approach of earlier volumes in favour of curating more focused, stylistically cohesive collections. So '31' follows on nicely from last week's disco-oriented '30', as the Lolitas mine obscure early 80s boogie, Eurodisco, Italo and electrofunk nuggets including The Jammers' 'Be Mine Tonight' from 1982 ('274'), One Two Three's 'Runaway' (a 1983 Bobby O production that now gets reworked as '275'), Clive Davis & Brainchild's 'Mystery Man' from 1984 ('280') and more.

Review: Fresh from delivering a tidy two-track missive on Rare Wiri, Tonbe returns to his spiritual home, Disco Fruit, with a suitably epic collection of fresh re-edits and reworks. It's a typically rock solid selection of tried-and-tested revisions, with the Serbian producer offering up a mixture of head-nodding, toe-tapping slo-mo grooves (see the slowly strutting disco-funk of "It's My Time" and "That Sample", not to mention the low-slung dub disco of "The Sun Goes Down" and Moog-laden shuffle of closing cut "Take Off Everything") and sweatier peak-time workouts. The latter are naturally in the majority, with highlights including the early Daft Punk style madness of "Brooka Bass", the rich electrofunk-goes-disco house flex of "Life Goes On" and the hot-stepping, jazz-powered goodness of "Something Brewing".

Review: Funky Breaks, Ghetto Funk, Nu Funk, Glitch Funk, Nu Skool & Old Skool Breaks: you name it, they got it! London's Funk Fusion are back with Fused Funk Volume 16, which is a whopper of a compilation; 17 servings of block rockin' beats which will suit any occasion.. almost! Some of the highlights on here (and there's quite a few) are: "More Diggity" by Jay Tip; no guesses what this is a remix of (hint: Blackstreet!) but there's no hints for which rock'n roll classic got mashed up with jump-up drum and bass on Phat Bangers Club's "Wah Wah Everybody". Review: The second instalment of Licked Out Funk on Funk Fusion is rip-roaring to say the least, as all 28 tracks were brought into this world with the sole purpose of getting you moving, something accomplished through big drum hits and recognisable samples. Almost every track on this compilation has a sample you'll recognise; 'Come To Skanker' is a distortion of Beatles classic 'Come Together', 'Ain't No Funkin' does a good job flipping Chaka Khan's original 'Ain't Nobody' and 'Trippin Biggie' gives the funk treatment to The Notorious BIG. This is a feel-good album of still quality tracks and you'll have a hard time not moving to the procession of boom-bap drums, big synth lines and sense of retro nostalgia.

Keen to make up for lack of releases, they've jammed a whopping nine scalpel jobs on to this release. Tru Disco Edits Vol. 2
Trotter - "40 Degrees" - (5:26) 120 BPM
Review: Po-faced disco and boogie purists should probably steer clear of this five-tracker from the Tru Funk crew. For the rest of us, there's plenty to enjoy. The action is typically floor-friendly, offering party hearty thrills with just enough purist flavour to impress. Agent 86 drops a deliciously synth-heavy stepper in the form of "Sticky Funk", while Jamie Ruz closes his eyes and lets the jazzual guitar solos flow on the soft focus boogie-soul jam "Lovers Delight". Yomakomba's "Hold You" should inspire a few "moments" on the dancefloor with its sinewy combination of '80s soul and Balearic house chug, while Trotter's "40 Degrees" is a slamming chunk of slap bass-heavy disco house.

Review: Tru Funk have taken the nu-funk ball and run so far with it they're in a stadium four towns over. This debut full lengther from fellow Polish party starter BMD is a fine example; a collection of his previous buzz-rubs and a few newies thrown in for good measure, it's all about the booties and beef-ups. All presented in a bulbous mid-tempo breaks style, highlights include a respectfully muscular reboot of Jamie Lidell's "Feels Good", a heads-down 80s synth funk shuffle ("Off The Catwalk") and a salacious twist on Scissor Sisters with Bootsy-level slap bass freakiness ("Yo Mama").

Listen - (3:26) 123 BPM
Review: Clich?s like 'melting pot' or 'smorgasbord' are chucked around way too freely in music reviews, but it's hard to describe the wide array of influences on display here any other way! 'Baller' is an Afro-jazz workout, albeit more 'Afro' than 'jazz', with something of a makossa-ish vibe about it. 'Schweet' itself, which follows, is a more straight-up homage to 70s funk and soul, but we're back in jazz (or more accurately swing) pastures for 'Les Frites', albeit here served up in Latin rather than Afro flava. The EP's then completed by 'Listen', another electro-swing cut with a ragtime kinda feel.

She's Got To Be - (6:24) 120 BPM
Review: A second 'Solid Gold Edits' collection here from Funk Hunk, and the Denver, Colorado native has done a great job of avoiding any obvious sources: 'She's Got To Be' bites Jerry Knight's 1982 jazz-funk/boogie gem 'She's Got To Be (A Dancer)' but that's about as much as we can tell you! Across the album's eight tracks, boogie and white-socked 80s soul have clearly provided the most obvious inspiration, but there's room, too, for excursions into rawer funk territory on cuts like 'Plastic Saddle' and 'Jungle Music'. 'I Choose You', with its phat 80s bassline and Janet Jackson-like vocal, is particularly worthy of your attention.

Funkier Than That
Making Love - (4:58) 123 BPM
Played by: Dario Piana, Limpodisco
Review: As we've learned in the past the Funk Hunk likes muscle, lots of disco muscle. His edits are never weak. So it's business as usual on Funkier Than That, his latest selection of edits. There are four cuts here to get up and down to. "Funkier Than That" is a snappy, Minneapolis-style majestic funker, "Pushin' On" is perky synth-pop and "Making Love" is fast, sweaty and a thrill a minute. Lastly "YYT Shake (Funk Hunk remix)" is a cool slice of vintage B-Boy hip-hop.

Played by: Trotter, Morlack
Review: Re-edit maestro Morlack went AWOL for a while, with reported sightings of him partying with Trotter in as far away locations as Brazilian jungles coming in thick and fast. Well wherever he disappeared to this producer is back and he's brandishing a new album to boot! Beautiful Mistakes features 13 new jams, all of which are guaranteed to get you moving in one direction or other. Highlights include the lively jump up Egyptian DnB of "Belly Pyramid", the smooth 80s soul grind of the title track and the glistening electro-funk grooves of "Nightlife". Back in business!

Cheeky Edits Vol III
Da Bird - (6:38) 124 BPM
Review: It's been a very exciting 2019 for Morlack, who continues his run of top quality releases by teaming up here with the ever-ready Funk Blasters team for the third edition of 'Cheeky Edits'. We kick off with the classy sample work and pulsating drum pressure of 'Rumba', before moving into the spaced out percussive structures of 'Momie' and latin-inspired arrangements of 'El Ray'. Next, 'Masta Rocka' arrives with a real punchy drumline, before the the almost 80's sounding compositional layout of 'Da Bird' rounds us off with a bang.

My Spin Is Ur Drama
Agharta Beet - (4:49) 124 BPM
Review: A legend of the breakbeat, sample disco, balearic and disco scene is one Morlack who turns in a huge EP of rock, R&B and pop sounds to touches of ragga, big band and San Francisco inspirations! Full of whooshing whites noise and sweet filter modulation, "GetOff" explodes with a hype NYC vibe next to the Faith No More antics of "Epic Enough". "My Spin Is Ur Drama" takes the EP down a more chilled, balearic and R&B inspired path - with a rap-laced vocal section - alongside "Spirit Of The Skurred" which is the clearcut breakbeat diamond of this latest Funk Blaster.

DJ Butcher - "Take A Chance With Me" - (6:20) 120 BPM
Nicko Marineli - "The Man" (66 edit) - (8:20) 120 BPM
Review: Nope, this ain't the return of mulleted 80s duo Black Lace, it's the latest comp from Dynamicron's Latino-centric nu-disco label Los Grandes. Once again they've searched high and low to gather the hottest re-edits. Highlights this time include Brevil's sultry sweaty "Sexy", Vinyladdicted's shocking percussion-led rework of 'cough', Jimmy Nail's "Ain't No Doubt", PCJ's baddass 70s disco rock freakout "I Like The Sound", DJ Butcher's faithful take on Mister Flaggio's Italo disco masterpiece "Take A Chance", and Craxi Disco's seductive and proggy synth-disco epic "Jerusalem".

PulpFusion - "Rocking Kids" - (4:03) 123 BPM
Zamali - "Funky Kasbah" (No Flip Flop mix) - (6:21) 124 BPM
Review: This should be considered something of a treat for funk breaks fans. In a bid to raise funds for the Love Music, Hate Racism charity, it gathers together tracks from both heavy hitters (Badboe, Fort Knox Five, Zamali etc) and lesser-known talents on one action-packed compilation. If this kind of party-rocking fun is your thing, it should be an essential purchase, not least because it includes some fine material. Check in particular Super Combo Funk's trad funk/P-funk fusion "I Don't Need No Dope", PulpFusion's fuzzy "Rockin Kids" and the wobble-step influenced "Boob Job" from Bristolian Ewan Hoozami, who happens to be the son of former England rugby player Alistair Hignell.

Twin Flavour Remix EP
Twin Flavour (original mix) - (5:06) 122 BPM Hot
Twin Flavour (Ursula 1000 remix) - (5:38) 122 BPM
Twin Flavour (Pips & Midi Kobain remix) - (5:13) 122 BPM
Review: Bucharest's Gemini Bros are all about classic funk sounds, and here they've enlisted a host of pals to help inject plenty of it into their own tune. "Twin Flavour" is a up-tempo belter, with an incessant rubber bassline and piano/organ riffs. The normally electro-heavy Ursula 1000 delivers an ace, but surprisingly discofied version, Stereo 77 go for trippy bongo acid and finally Pips & Midi Kobain beef up the original, adding plenty of brass and wah-wah guitar in the process.

Soul Scratch - "Pacified" - (3:44) 124 BPM
The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble - "Rise Of The East" - (4:22) 124 BPM
Review: Paris DJs are a Paris-based production team featuring the likes of Djouls, Grant Phabao, Loik Dury & Ben Hito and featuring guest vocalists, musicians, deejays, graphic/web designers and writers. This is a great compilation showing off the state off things in their collective at the present time.. and it's impressive! Starting off with funk soul jam of Connie Price & The Keystones - "El Nino" which sounds like something from the film Shaft. QASB's "Jaguar" channels the spirit of Curtis Mayfield on this equally brilliant seventies inspired soul jam. It's a mixed bag on here; take for instance the rhythm and blues jam by Stepak Takraw, "Phat Fat Jackson" or the sultry urban R&B j of Baby Jaymes' "21 Questions" that would make R. Kelly stand up and notice! Our favourites are the smoky, latin love balled by The Echocentrics ("Has Regresado Viejo" feat Natalia Clavier) and Whitefield Soundz- "Safari Strut" which summons the spirit of the late, great Jimi Hendrix of this fuzzy, psychedelic rock excursion.

Review: A special dedication to his formative days praying at the good church of hip-hop, cutting and pasting in Sunday school, Venice Beach member Moar gets down and does the caterpillar. An eclectic ensemble of loops and compositions, this lick shots from Senor Coconut to Bambaataa and back again with its frenetic arrangement of swinging drums, cheeky samples and crafty editing. Highlights include the bongo and fuzz box fusion of "2 vs 2" and low-swung bass shuffle and swing of "Bump On". Moar please!

Distro Punks Presents Funky Breaks
Blind Tap Dancer - (3:10) 120 BPM
Review: Distro Punks make their return here alongside Johnnypluse, who released a string of well received projects across the breadth of 2018. This brand new project contains thirteen tracks of futuristic electronic goodness, from the stuttered moogy tones of 'We Need More Lasers' and unpredictable sample-based madness of 'Blind Tap-Dancer' to the sharp drum grooves of 'Rebel Funk' and layered melodies of 'Pull The Chord'. There is truly something for all breakbeat lovers amongst this body of work, yet again solidifying Johnnypluse as one of the most creative sample based producers in the scene today.
