Refined Textures Vol 1
1Dan - "Foundations" - (8:06) 120 BPM
Bittersuite - "Squeeze In" - (6:58) 120 BPM
Miles Sagina - "Can We Heal Them?" - (6:28) 124 BPM Hot
Review: Atmospheric Existence Recordings keep up their annual release rate with label boss Miles Sagnia inviting 1Dan and Bittersuite to join him on only the third release. Newcomer 1Dan opens proceedings with the sprawling soft machine funk flex of "Foundations", a track driven by gutter deep bass movements, steppy syncopation and rich sonic textures that no doubt helped influence the title of the EP. Bittersuite then step forward with the upwards acid dub pressure of "Squeeze In" which steadily accrues an acidic overtone before a delightful left turn into a futuristic mechano soul rhythmic thrust. It's left to Sagnia to provide the final moment with the tightly relentless throb of "Can We Heal Them" that slowly reveals its inner acid brilliance.

1Thirty - "Brain Zap" - (4:22) 133 BPM Hot
1Thirty - "Throttle" - (4:40) 130 BPM
1Thirty - "Warped Steel" - (3:56) 134 BPM
Karl Vincent & 1Thirty - "Revolt" - (6:00) 130 BPM
Review: More UK-leaning hybrid house from the Project Allout collective, and it looks like we have a brave newcomer on the scene in 1Thirty! The young bass-slinger opens with the wobbly garage swings of "Brain Zap", followed by the equally off-kilter yet sexy and utterly danceable bass waves of "Throttle". "Warped Steel" is more on the two-step end of the game, thanks to its sporadic beats and stop-start motion, but the man's collaboration with Karl Vincent on "Revolt" is what'll surely get the floor rockin' sideways. Yes, yes - pull up!

Hypnotise EP
Hypnotise EPEXCLUSIVE
Hypnotise - (5:39) 130 BPM
Deepish - (5:45) 130 BPM Hot
Review: Jamie and Matt from Brighton, also known as 2 Rotten Scoundrels proudly mix up garage, house and breaks. "Hypnotise" by 2 Rotten Scoundrels is dark, UK bass influenced tech house for South London basement shut-ins. A heavy swing fuelled beat supports a razor sharp melody and heavy bass assault. Those Burial style R&B pitch shifted vocals are a nice touch too. "2 Rotten Scoundrels" by the mysterious Deepish (see what they did there!) gets a bit more on the progressive house tip it seems for a minute. With its hands in the air organ stab melody, but wait until that grimy UK bass starts tearing through the track, and it's absolutely sick.

Review: With Italy hit hardest by the Coronavirus and lockdown right now, Milan crew, collective and glitterazzi Rollover keeps hope alive! Normally a trusted party for Milano's Apollo club (that's brought the likes of Tiga, Maurice Fulton, Ame and Bambounou to town), Rollover is the place and project for DJ duo and label owners Rocco Fusco & Tiberio Carcano to work their magic. In times of crisis Rollover presents a special initiative via their "ANYTHING GOES" edit service, welcoming voluntary contributions that pay homage to the spirit of Balearic music and beyond! Expect tracks from 2manydjs, Adam Port, Soul Clap, Boombass, Moscoman and Bill Brewster, among many others, with proceeds going to the official emergency fund set up by the Italian Civil Protection Department destined for the COVID-19 crisis in Italy.

Feel For You EP
Feel For You - (4:46) 174 BPM Hot
Enjin - (4:36) 58 BPM
Review: A very interesting release here from Soulserious, a label that usually excels in the UKG and deep house side of the dance as the bossman Sunday Roast unveils his D&B alter-ego 33Reasons. Two cuts deep, it works as a nice introduction to this darker side to the label founder. 'Feel For You' is the prowling growler of the release thanks to its curmudgeonly bassline that grunts and oozes its way over the drums. It's in good company as 'Enjin' brings up the rear with more cold, spacious drums and a series of ghostly harmonics trilling and flickering over the roomy groove. Feels for this.

The Thoors - "Learn To Forget" (V's Secret Alphabet Jam) - (6:55) 123 BPM
Review: A trio of re-edits here, kicking off with a fresh rework of The Four Tops' 'Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)' from 1973 that's credited to all three of the named artists. Keita then goes solo to bring us 'Difference' - the source for this one remains unidentified but the 'Afro Blues' titling of the mix tells you pretty much all you need to know in terms of sound and style. The EP's then completed by The Thoors' 'Learn To Forget', which loops up chunks of The Doors' 'Soul Kitchen' - exactly as you'd expect from an outfit whose previous works have included 'Peace Rogue' and 'Love Her Badly'!

Review: Having paid homage to cult Mexican gangster film Mi Vida Loca last year, 6Blocc takes time to celebrate another classic movie Boyz In The Hood with another concept album. Taking samples from the film and weaving them into gully floor heaters, 6Blocc shows us his darkest skills with a palette of sounds. "Church Booty" refuses to quit with its relentless back/forth sub ripples, "Crenshaw & Century" is a Tom & Jerry level jungle joint full of twisted amen edits and Ice Cube freshness, "In The Hood" slinks and tickles with "Pulp Fiction" style minimalism while "Mark" flips the mean and moody halftime bird with cosmic grit. These are just a handful of highlights.

Review: 6Blocc's inexhaustible output continues... And it does so while poking and prodding new exciting areas. Here we find him paying homage to the mighty Wu. Unravelling their mysteries and messages and building them back around the breaks, Blocc busts a range from dubstep to D&B by way of prototype 160 jungle, paying respect to The Clan with authority all the way. Highlights include the added drama of "Chessboxin'", the classic jungle subversion theme to "WWO" and the really clever twist of Method Man's "Release Yo Delf".

Review: Wu homages don't come much classier than 6Blocc's recent all-genre bass chamber explorations. First came the full vocal refixes, now come the leaner instrumental twists where the Wu Tang love is still abundantly clear thanks to the fact RZA's sample craft is as sharp as their lyrics. Some hit hard from the off such as The Charmels hooks on "Ca$h Rule$" while others take a while to tease such as "Wwo" where 6Blocc's classic jungle breaks roll and flex before Method Man's smoky croaks are used as a percussive device. From dark dub ("Suicide") to breezy footwork/jungle ("Wrek Room"), 6Blocc has repurposed Wu Tang with well-crafted style right here.

Review: LA-based 6BLOCC is really the only dude making some straight up jungle mayhem in the Greater Los Angeles area these days and his Cali Jungle compilations are just about the only class d&b edits out there! This time he's back with round two of the series and it's another thrilling 25 cuts of break-ridden goodness for your Saturday night ruffage! Think Members Only but for old-school UK rave anthems and you're almost there...this is for anyone who is in love with the genre but requires that little extra diversity, that additional touch of funk. What a package!

Review: Fresh from his rampant jungle and breakneck breakbeat excursions, LA vibe infuser 6Blocc takes respite in his dungeon for a series of deeper dub jams. Ranging from the super-minimal, slimy-walled sludge of "Dark Side" to the ricochet-rhythm and MC-peppered dynamics of "Illusion" via the steppier militancy and spoken word weirdness of "Wake Up Call" and the pure titanium rhythm of "Break & Eliminate", it's 6Blocc at his deepest and darkest. And yet more evidence of his versatility.

Review: Longstanding west coast jungle informer 6Blocc comes correct with an album of chunky edits. Complementing the lower-tempo "Gritty N Grimey" parallel release with whistle-stop 170 ruffage, each of the 21 cuts take the London template and bake it in classic Cali sunshine. Highlights include the super-freaky Adina Howard reference "Freak In The Jungle", a gun-toting Blackstreet cowboy cut "Diggity" and the Marky-esque soulful roller "Time Flies". Capturing ever deft move of 6Blocc's commitment to the US jungle movement, Cali Jungle is the ultimate document of where both he and his fellow 170BPM countrymen are at right now... And it's a great place to be.

Review: LA's most annihilistically prolific bass fiend 6Blocc returns with yet another full length collection (his fourth this year so far) This one pays special dedication to jungle's deepest foundations with twisted amens, mangled synths and raucous MC calls to action. All tailored for the floor and your chaotic creative mixing pleasure, highlights swing like gremlins from every snare roll and edit. Big moments include the traditional organ skanks of "Jungle Lick", the rubber-ball subs of "Original Junglist" and the chalice-chuffing vocal flexes of "Reggaematic Style". Bona fide roots business.

Review: This is a unique release of hip-hop influenced soul and funk drum & bass, tailor made for the relaxing lifestyle of Venice Beach. There are fluttering breaks, whispering basslines and endless minutes of voluptuous soul, which roll out alongside touches of menacing vocal to really add some oomph to the release. 6Blocc has killed this collection, and his remix of 'Time 2 Shine' is packed with retro 90s vibes, as spoken samples hover over an instrumental of pure vibes. Wonderful stuff.

Review: Last spotted messing with the Wu, 6Blocc takes us even further back in time for his own dub side of the moon. A true Floydian odyssey rebooted for the modern bass lover, subtly is the name of 6Blocc's game: the paranoid, way-ahead-of-its-time "Run" gets a lick of 303 and swinging breakbeat, "Speak" retains all its dreamy majesty while the iconic moans and cries of "Sky" are stretched out from midnight fumble to 24-hour marathon. Elsewhere the till-chiming riff of "Money" is smothered in blankets of sub while "Colour" is galvanised with a classic Dig Your Own Hole era big beat. To some this may err on heresy, but to others this is a trip like no other. See you on the other side.

Review: It's pretty clear from the get go that 80's Child is all about going back to the future. As the door of his Delorean opens upwards and the billowing smoke clears, we see that he has brought back four 80s dancefloor wonders which he sensitively retweaks with contemporary flair. "Keep On Lovin Me" is that kind of lazy electro-boogie jam that's all about that crisp snare drop, "Tryin' To Get Over" is more your upbeat brassy funk number, "Serious" is Donna Allen's 1986 snarling New Jack beast of a tune and "Plane Love" end things with a soul-meets-Latino funkout. Hot stuff!

Review: Hot on the heels of his well received Night Vision EP on Yam Who's Midnight Riot label, electrofunk-obsessed edits fiend Danny Worrall returns to Ruben & Ra's Retrospective imprint with the second installment of his Back To The 80s series. Those familiar with his particular blend of '80s nostalgia should know what to expect, namely tweaked but fairly faithful reworks of well-known cuts and underground classics. As usual, there's plenty of solid dancefloor material on show, from the teasing build-ups, rousing horns and jumpy synths of "Don't Let Go" and stretched-out '80s soul fun of "Baby Love", to the singalong disco rush of "Wear It Out".

Review: 2019 was a busy year for 84bit, a producer who released a mixture of deep house and nu-disco jams on a variety of largely digital-only labels. "Mamma Jamma" is his debut for Disco Fruit and features a number of notable cuts. Chief amongst these is the title track, a bustling, bass-heavy chunk of booming disco-house that's subsequently taken in a funkier direction by the ubiquitous Dr Packer, Hotmood and Tonbe, whose fine revision is looser, warmer and baggier. The EP also boasts two versions of "HN": an electric piano-laden original mix that expertly joins the dots between elecro, funk breaks and disco-funk, and a bubbly nu-disco revision by label regular Mitko.

Strawberry Jam Forever - (3:52)
With You - (3:06)
Eat My Shorts - (2:59) Hot
Review: A centrepiece of breaks and hip-hop producer A Skillz' Beatles mini-mix for 1Xtra last year, "Strawberry Jam Forever" is a deftly handled remix, cutting up parts of the original in a Dilla or Bullion-style, and adding drums and intense bass shots along the way. "With You" handles Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" with a great deal of class, concentrating mostly on a tight vocal loop, while "Eat My Shorts" takes Ludacris' verses from "Stand Up" and layers them on top of long-forgotten 90s Britpop tune "Eat My Goal" by Collapsed Lung.

Review: More mashed up funk, hip-hop and breaks from A Skillz on the 10th in his series of bootleg booty-shakers. "Twang Banger" sees Tony Rotten himself, Blak Twang, getting his acapella of "So Rotten" placed over a beefed-up "Cross The Tracks" by The JB's. "Poppa Soul" on the other had uses a cat-iron classic acapella, Ultramagnetic MC's "Poppa Large", and marries it to a lost hip-hop classic, Pete Rock's "The Creator".

Get Up (Sex Machine) - (3:17) Hot
Review: More from undisputed breaks mash-up king A Skillz, whose impressive productivity shows no signs of slowing down. As with previous outings in the Insane Bangers series, there's much to admire - not least A Skillz' usual blend of classic old skool breaks, wobbly basslines and familiar samples. "Express Yourself" blends elements of Charles Wright's "Express Yourself" with rump-shaking '80s breaks and some serious wobble. "Get Up (Sex Machine)" meanwhile, puts The Godfather of Soul through the ringer, inserting a rocket up the backside of one of his greatest hits via pulverising bass and breakbeats so sharp you could cut a steak with 'em.

Beat Don't Stop - (4:49)
Review: Exclusive to Juno comes the fourth instalment of breaks producer A Skillz's Insane Bangers project - mashing up hip-hop, funk and breaks in a bootleg style for the win. "Feeling Kinda Indsane" whacks down the acapella of Afrika Bambaataa's "Just Get Up And Dance" over a crisp, nu-funk beat, while "Beat Don't Stop" uses portions of Chic-esque disco, the famous "Shack Up" break and tons of vocal cuts from sources such as Marlena Shaw's "Woman Of The Ghetto".

Review: Hooking up with Aussie breaks titan Nick Thayer on the latest in this series of cheeky, hip-hop bootleg cuts, A-Skillz keeps things very funky on "Rock The Spot" - a mix of chanking guitars, thumping drums and tons of accapella cuts from tunes such as Pitbull's "Bojangles". "19.99" is a souped-up take on Prince's classic, with the original accapella layered over a schizoid-funk beat and plenty of fresh MC hooks.

"Hot Dogg" lays the acapella from Snoop's "Drop It Like It's Hot" over some nicely rounded beats and bass, while "Money Banger" has a lot of fun with the O Jay's "For The Love Of Money", blending in cuts from MOP's "Ante Up" and Frankie Cutlass' "Puerto Rico" for good measure.

Review: The Doro Sounds team have unveiled a serious pair of sizzlers with this one as they welcome the monstrous sound of A.2.Z inside for a hard-hitting EP drop. We begin our dive into this one by exploring the system-shattering synthesizer sweeps and crunchy vocal samples of 'Astronaut', which combines the raucous nature of UK bass music with an almost g-house style drumset to cause some serious damage. On the flip, a varying display of synthetic mastery is unleashed as 'Got Yo Back' delivers one of the most intense breakdowns of 2022 so far. Awesome work and a well balanced pairing on this one!

The You House EP is the latest and, although boasting only two tracks, is packed with the solid quality production that he's known for. Both tracks have a UKF bounce but the title track adds some raw fuzz to the sparse 4/4 beats and doomy synths. "The Hole" on the other hand, is livelier with skippy pumping garage vibes, snippets of MC vocals and some big hands-in-the-air swooshes.

The two main tracks here, "Distortion" and "Escape" are both killer slices of tough, bassy, late night house, all peppered with lashings of funk. Review: Little-known Spanish producer A2C specializes in the kind of tough, chunky late night deep house that should appeal to a wide range of DJs. Take "Wasabi", for example. With its heavily compressed kicks, bold electro-tinged bassline, garage-influenced vocal stabs, woozy pads and clandestine effects, it sounds like a rougher, more urban take on the Hypercolour sound. "Space" inhabits similar territory, with classic US garage drums, swirling melodies and touchy-feely female vocal samples being joined by a gargantuan UKG bassline and rumbling late night sounds. It's bold, brassy, and shamelessly floor-friendly - just the thing to get dancefloors moving this winter.

Keeping us on our toes this new track will grab you by the short and curlies and have you dancing on speaker stacks for the next month or so until his next installment arrives. Unless it's by way of this pumping, slightly psychedelic tech-funk-flavoured breakbeat thumper from longstanding Spanish producer A2C then, ironically, you actually win. This new EP launches his own, self-titled imprint, and there's no better way to open a scene than with the gentle, percussive waves of "Hypnozahara", which evolves into even murkier landscapes on the supremely dubwise "Psychedelic Cumbia". "Ode O" changes the pace, taking those organic beats into house mode, which are then expertly remixed by Victor Norman. "Dream Of Abbi" finishes this majestic opening release with dreamy, chanting sways of tribalism. What an absolute tip we have here!

Review: Actual Phantom - disappointingly not an actual phantom (we checked) - makes the sort of bootleg breaks mash-ups that come with a mile-wide grin and basslines that could fell a herd of cows at 50 paces. There's little subtle about either of the tracks here, but both will send breaks dancefloors - not usually known for their love of the intricacies of electronic music - into arm-waving raptures. "I Need Your Lovin" cheekily uses vocal samples from a familiar old MOR classic ("Everybody Needs Somebody Sometimes"). The fact that it works is a thrilling surprise. "You Don't Love Me", meanwhile, is a skanking assault on the head, hips and feet.

Review: Fresh talent Addministro arrives on Project Allout with "Alert", showing himself to be a producer steeped in classic grime and UK funky, with a track whose power hinges on its raw bassline, 8-bit chirps and broken rhythms. Huge remix support is offered; Spooky turns in a sparse eski-inspired version with devastating subs and sirens, Trends and P Jam turn in jungle-inspired heaters. Our picks however are Moony's massive re-rub that pairs huge breaks with halfstepping action and Sir Pixalot's 8-bit version which sounds like an NES cartridge gone bad.

Review: This four-tracker from up-and-coming producers Alex Agore and James Johnston signals a promising start for new deep house imprint No Matter What. Agore's "Improper Change" is an intoxicating take on Detroit deep house - all drawn-out one-key chords, bumping low-end bounce and slick vocal snippets. The included Lady Blacktronica remix takes things up a notch thanks to some subtle acid tweakery, Beatdown chords and decidedly snappier beats. James Johnston's "I Know It's Not Time", meanwhile, is arguably his best production yet - a flowing jazz-house builder with a sweet, bluesy edge. The package is completed by a chunkier Rick Wade remix, which cleverly injects some thick, bassline-driven bounce.

Review: Well, it's safe to say that Sure State have pulled off a cracker with this one, as Akhur is enlisted to bring forward a sub heavy two track dubstep single. We kick off with the "In your face" intensity of 'Boogaloo Dub' which packs a kick like a shire horse. As a composition this one leaps between pleasing, aquatic melodics and sharply oscillating scrapy synth patterns. On the flip we roll into the deeper sounds of 'Venture' which is a stepper's delight. Through a roughneck combo of super punchy drum processing and elongated sub bass leads we are treated to a perfectly composed dark roller. Great stuff from both Akhur and the Sure State team.

Review: Dublin's Aidan Casserly doesn't release tonnes of material under his own name - the majority of his finished material is spread across three other monikers - but what he does put out is always very much on our menu. Last time he released an EP under his name was in 2011 on Ninthwave Media, so we're glad to see him back with an album for Werkstatt Recordings. Incubus is a wild, diverse LP which spans many different styles and incorporates a great number of influences throughout its ten tracks, a general sound that fits in line with the all-compassing term that is 'coldwave'. Having said that, there is something very nostalgic about these tunes, and they're certainly drenched in an 80's kind of neb-romanticism. This is particularly true of tracks like "City As A Memory", "Funeral For Two" - which adds a little porto-techno vibe to its framework - and the angelic sways of "Slow" featuring Kriistal Ann. All in all, however, this is simply some good indie electronic material with a dark edge.

Disco Mania - Edits 1
I Can't Wait Saturday - (5:49) 121 BPM Hot
Sun Fun Shine - (4:57) 122 BPM
I Like To Party - (5:40) 124 BPM
Review: Nantes-based disco-house fusionist Jay Airiness has impressed in recent times, with his Boogie Nite EP on Rebel Heart offering just the right blend of original house chops and classic disco/boogie samples. For this outing on Diggin' Deeper, he's in straight-up disco edits mode, offering up loopy house interpretations of some classic material. "I Can't Wait Saturday" sees him successfully chop-up Oliver Cheetham's anthem-like "Get Down Saturday Night", adding a little grunt via well-chosen loops and smooth house drums. On "Sun Sun Shine" he does the same to Central Line synth-boogie summer anthem "Walking Into Sunshine", giving it a relentless loop-house flavour. As for "I Like To Party", it's an extra-heavy, housed-up take on a synth-heavy '80s soul classic.

Kalimba Tune EP
Kalimba Tune - (4:35) 115 BPM
Saturday Morning - (7:02) 116 BPM
Kalimba Tune (Hardway Bros remix) - (6:54) 115 BPM Hot
Kalimba Tune (Chris Massey remix) - (5:44) 115 BPM
Kalimba Tune (Verdo remix) - (5:25) 118 BPM
Saturday Morning (Ruben & Ra's Cosmic Jam) - (7:30) 118 BPM
Review: Given the title, you'd expect Ajello's latest to feature a prominent kalimba melody. Unsurprisingly, it does, alongside some African-inspired percussion and some seriously squelchy bottom-end in their typical dirty nu-disco style. The result is a track that isn't needlessly deep or overtly banging, instead playing its strengths by delivering the best of both words. Even better is Hardway Brothers' decidedly cosmic remix, which adds some voodoo magic and more than a little acid tweakery. Elsewhere, Verdo's darting remix is pleasingly Balearic in its wide-eyed approach, while Retrospective label bosses Ruben & Ra turn bonus track "Saturday Morning" into a rush inducing chunk of deep electrofunk.

Review: After 18 months of near silence, Ajello first started teasing us with this in September 2014. Now finally available, it's every bit as sprightly, fun and funky as we'd hoped. With Prelude style synth and vocals and the duo's trademark silken production dynamics, it's well worth the wait. Remix-wise Luminodisco adds a headier 4/4 dancefloor focus, Yam Who? gets his slap bass boogie on while Rayko takes us to the stars with an epic, cosmic work out that's not dissimilar to the early work of Prins Thomas. Stunning.
