Release Title

Untitled - (5:36)
Liquid Love - (6:04) 174 BPM Hot
Played by: Soula
Review: Any ideas as to who this mystery artist might be? Snapped up by Fokuz to continue their unstoppable roster of impressive new and upcoming artists, both tracks on this enigmatic release hold true to their ethos of lush, liquid rhythms and classic D&B sounds. The first untitled track is heavily influenced by old school jungle, but comes at it from a far more laid back approach. Sweeping strings round off the edges and uniquely husky vocals sweeten the deal. "Liquid Love" is an all out summer roller, building that big, warm, bouncy vibe alongside soulful sampling and earworm-inducing vocals. Impressive stuff - now we just need to find out who they are.

Review: Hot on the heels of last year's Metabolism album for Token, Sigha drops a new four-track EP. "Circular" is a pounding, bleep-heavy rhythm that resounds to powerful drums. On "Gliss", the UK producer ramps up the intensity levels with droning riffs and a dense rhythm that come across like a contemporary, more refined take on vintage Steve Bicknell. "Flare" is less obtuse and experimental, with Sigha dropping hypnotic tonal bleeps over a pounding groove, in much the same manner as Mike Parker's output. Rounding off the EP is "Hum", where Sigha goes deeper and deeper into experimental sound scapes.

Review: Untitled is the debut album of Different Marks, the tantalising combination of Polish duo Catz n Dogz and Martin Dawson of Two Armadillos fame, finished shortly before Dawson's sad and untimely death last year. Those familiar with Catz n Dogz' bright, bumpy house sound will be right at home here, with an album filled with catchy hooks, swung rhythms, R&B influences, subtle low end and astonishing vocal contributions from the likes of Cari Golden, Ben Westbeech and Glimpse. Best of all, it's absolutely free!

Review: Originally recorded in 1983, O Yuki Conjugate's Untitled EP is a dream record for Emotional Rescue. It's startlingly ahead of its time, featuring stiff drum machine beats, strange sampling and fuzzy, lo-fi synth work, shot through with the wonk of post punk that makes so much early electronic music of the era so captivating. "Beyond Control" has an almost motorik feel to it, with plenty of liquid delay processing and woozy tones melting around the march of the beat. "Disco Song" channels the dubbed out spirit of The Pop Group and gives it a plastic organ makeover, while "Clattering Song" lives up to its name and falls apart in your ears. "Beyond Control 2" completes the package with a wild line in reverse effects by way of a thoroughly primitive remix.

Untitled 1 (taken from moveable parts chapter 1) - (6:05) 128 BPM Hot
One Touch (taken from minimal nation) - (5:32) 128 BPM
Review: Some things never go out of fashion and this is especially true of Robert Hood's '90s minimalism. For those who didn't buy the releases first time round, these edits by Mark Broom provide the perfect opportunity to play catch up. The edit of "Untitled 1" from 1995's Moveable Parts Chapter 1 is the more abrasive track, its warped, jarring rhythm moving up and down the intensity scale with all the precision of a military drone. The UK producer's take on "One Touch", from the harder to track down Minimal Nation - the vinyl release sells for over €30 on Discogs - is less visceral but its repetitive filtering and sleek rhythm make it a must for any self-respecting techno DJ.

Review: Lobster Theremin sub label Mork presents us with newcomer John Fay, who on Mork 10 shows us some glacial and smoked out dub techno textures of the most decayed style. Starting out with "1271" with its deeply rolling groove; it's just so sublime and that pitch shifted monologue gives it that epic feel. "MKV" dives even deeper into the abyss, its overdriven aesthetic only adding to the vibe; all echo laden atmosphere resonating violently, yet full of bliss. Then there's the slow burning closer "Track 3" which signals the full descent into said cavernous depths, beatless for the most part and drowning itself amongst mangled, swirling dub chords and brazen tape hiss; this is some of the best 10 minutes you'll hear all year. Tip!

Review: It's clear that Australian Inkswel is of the electro-boogie persuasion and here's three tracks to prove it. "Do It" is catchy and crisp with lovely mid 80s synthpop vibes, "Tu Machito" is pure old skool electro and "LFO Bounce" is a fantastic b-boy drum box workout. Funkineven beefs up the latter hissy percussion and more melodies than you can shake a synth at.

Mama Said Go Slow - (5:52) 120 BPM Hot
Deaf World Dub - (6:28) 110 BPM
Review: Ukrainian producer par excellence Vakula maintains his label hopping endeavours with this utterly essential drop on the newly minted Shevchenko label. Named in honour of the Ukrainian cultural icon Taras (as opposed to the one time free scoring forward Andrei) and rumoured to be closely affiliated with the Firecracker imprint upon which Vakula first came to our attention, it's a stellar first release that gives further credence to the growing opinion Vakula can do no wrong. "Mama Said Go Slow" is typical Vakula, twisting through various analogue passages, the few constants being the gloopy subaqueous rhythms that occupy the nether regions along with what might just be a sample from one of Muhammed Al Fayed's favourite musicians and the hissing oscillations of percussion. The next track sees Vakula indulge in some smudged out beatdown business on "Deaf World (Dub)" which draws you on a kaleidoscopic journey to the lower echelons of hypnotic, fluttering house music. Obvious sonic references to Detroit pervade the track but it's indelibly marked with the graceful Eastern European touch of Vakula. It proves to be a subtler yet equally potent example of the producer's lack of interest in traditional house music structures. Hopefully Vakula will continue to release music of this standard long after we run out of superlatives.

Review: Amsterdam's Bobby Donny is a label by Steve Mensink and home to local wunderkind Frits Wentink amongst others. They now present Californian producer Tlim Shug (E-Beamz/Echovolt) with some lush, lo-fi house shenanigans. From the emotive, slo-mo deepness of "Untitled One" with its Terekke influence and VHS aesthetic throughout, then the second untitled cut - a dusty, MPC style jam reminiscent of that Berlin sound popularised by Max Graef or Glenn Astro. you can feel the vibe of "Untitled Three" with its hypnotic polyrhythms that will put you in a trance.

Interrupted - (3:30) 85 BPM
Review: Valence provided the forum for Ambivalent to reinvent himself. Formerly associated with minimalism and the Minus label, the US producer now makes some of the finest contemporary club techno. "Untitled" is a case in point: over a robust kick, he lays down a howling siren riff and a crisp percussive backing. There is a clarity of sound and precision audible here that few of his contemporaries can reach. On "Gorge", he uses a similarly tough backing, but lays down a searing acid line as an accompaniment. "Interrupted" closes the release with the kind of lush ambient techno that was a staple of producers like Orbital and System 7 during the 90s.

Review: Having spent the last few years championing vinyl-only releases, London-based deep house imprint Slow Down has finally decided to make some of its' releases available on digital download. Fittingly, they've reached for the label's 2014 debut release first, a brilliant four-tracker from long-serving U.S producer Greg Stewart, better known as DJ Aakmael. Each of the four tracks is wonderfully warm, rich and gently life affirming, with Stewart variously making use of bluesy sampled loops, fluid piano motifs, deep-space chords, wild organ solos, tactile New Jersey garage basslines and brilliantly programmed percussion. In other words, it's a collection of top quality deep house tracks from a producer who's been at the top of his game since the 1990s.

Review: Between them Norwell and Stephan Olbricht have been busy exploring dusty corners of production with a faded drones and dishevelled rhythms as their calling cards, with the latter appearing on the appropriate domicile of Opal Tapes before this joint venture pits the two producers together on Cleaning Tapes. The album is a wonderfully dreamt up jaunt through hazy soundscapes, always with some kind of 4/4 thrum gently guiding the proceedings along and rich with detail even in its more subtle moments, but it's not all completely strung out. "Deck B" has a distinct beat nudging it along, albeit under glorious swathes of Boards Of Canada-esque synth warbles, but it's the exception to a pleasantly slow-paced rule that guides the LP, additional remixes and all.
