Review: An Aussie in Japan with a worryingly intense obsession with early 80s boogie, Jsquared is not your average nu-disco producer. This of course is a good thing, because, well, he knows those grooves like no other. His latest missive is "Don't Stop", which takes a killer slap bass and glitter vintage disco-boogie jam and adds some bang up to date thump. Result? A seriously slammin' retro floorfiller.
Review: Spain's Oscar Albaladejo AKA Solazz comes to Hot Gorilla with a simple two-tracker here. 'Don't Stop', in its Original form, sits on the disco/boogie cusp, with distinctly 80s-sounding synths married to a nice chunky walking bassline and a boogie-style male "don't stop until the morning comes" vocal. So effectively does it recapture the sound and feel of that era, in fact, that it feels almost churlish to say that it's C Da Afro's beefed-up and slightly pacier remix that's probably got the most instant dancefloor appeal. But we'll leave track selection up to you: either's good, so you pays your money and you makes your choice!
Review: Earlier this year, Mr Bongo reissued the 1975 eponymous debut album from Spaceark, an obscure rock and soul outfit from Los Angeles who operated in the years 1973-1979. 1978's sophomore effort 'Spaceark Is' is due to get the same treatment next month, but in the meantime it's the turn of his non-album single from 1975. 'Don't Stop' fuses raw funk with something of the glitz and glamour of a late 50s/early 60s ballroom and features some fine sax work as well as Ms Way's heartfelt, pleading vocal. Like the original release, it comes accompanied by a simple Instrumental.
Review: Polish producer Warson has been providing funk-minded breakbeat heads with formidable dancefloor fare since 2011. Here, he pops up on his own Tru Funk imprint with another trio of tried-and-tested floorfillers. "Louder" kicks things off in style, lacing cut-up horns, funk vocal samples and bubbling electronics over a bass-heavy midtempo breakbeat-funk groove. "Love Theme" ups the tempo, basing the action around a classic loose-but-tight breakbeat rhythm. Musically, it has a richer and more expansive feel, with bouncy pianos, sharp strings and fluid funk guitars perfectly accompanying the two prominent vocal samples. He really lets loose on "Happy Song", a jump-up drum and bass roller built around samples from a heavyweight '70s funk rock jam.
Review: Banzai is launching a rock, or two, at your head with this fiery single on Breeze that'll appeal to anyone who likes their music rough and ready. In a subgenre that can be inconsistent, to put it mildly, this is jump-up as its meant to be done, over the top but to the exact right degree. 'Don't Stop' is the better of the two, with a sick vocal sample and an off-beat element to the arrangement that gives its punchy bass stabs that extra oomph a lot of tunes don't quite manage to hit. The foghorns are out on the flip in a KoTR-esque number, and 'Attitude' rounds off the single in style. Banging.
