Review: Guy J's progressive house roots shine through on this first contribution to the Balance series. It's not just the sound - occasionally downtempo, always atmospheric and sometimes deliciously dreamy - but also his choice of tunes; each of the 13 tracks has been reconstructed or re-edited by the experienced Israeli producer. While this would be seen as self-indulgence in others, it gives the mix a coherence and fluidity that's never less than attractive. Wisely, he mixes it up throughout, flitting between dreamy deepness (Juan Deminicis), trippy dancefloor intensity (his edit of Radio Slave's version of APM 001's "Migrants"), picturesque goodness (Nevar's "Phases of Grief") and darting, melodic techno (Echomen).

Review: Little did we know that the excellent Freerange label were cooking up a follow-up EP by Clavis, the production duo consisting of Manuel Tur and Adrian Hoffmann, who deal in a very specific brand of techy house. Much like their debut EP for the label, "Alcine" rolls its pseudo tribal drums at a steady pace among dissolving melodies, and "Mangogul's Dream" offers a similar yet even more minimalistic take on the genre. The dub version of the latter is what really gets our juices flowing, though, because we're deeply into that swollen bass and well-rounded beats...not to mention that echoing cascade of percussion that spills so well over the tough groove.

Review: Irishman Peter Power has become quite a well known figure in Berlin since moving there several years ago and has been one of the figures behind some of the city's now legendary haunts like Kleine Reise (RIP) and the successful Loftus Hall/Bertrams: which has had a great run thus far too. Now the man behind the Ufordia imprint returns with his second outing on Thomas Von Party's Multi Culti, which itself has also made the move to the German capital. Power delves deep into the exotic here, borrowing heavily from African music and getting very atmospheric and esoteric in the process. The life affirming raindance of "Adama Waro" (original mix) is certainly geared for some moments of truth on the dancefloor. Equally spiritual is the traditional percussion based journey of "Mori Baka" (original mix). There's some great remixes by label manager Dreems and Bucharest duo Khidja: the latter's contributions which shine the most, particularly on their balearica infused/Second Summer of Love sounding remix of "Dansakoni".

Review: Not so long ago was Above & Beyonds deeper offshoot regarded as the 'sister' label, it now reigns supreme as quite possibly one of our favourites. With expert A&R'ing and artists development at the forefront, the diversity and talent scouting is like no other. Review: At the end of 2021, veteran British producer John Graham aka Quivver presented his LP Revelate on Bedrock, which now gets treated to a series of remixes by some of the top names in the scene. Ukraine's 8Kays takes you on a moody journey into the deep on her hypnotic rework of "Hold", Lexer provides a glassy-eyed and bittersweet remix of "Nothin New To Feel", while a foreboding, high tech minimal version of "Funkily" by Losless was another standout remix, as well as Weska's powerful peak time rendition of "Atomised" which is aimed squarely at the main room dancefloor.

Review: PvD returned to his very best with last years 'Evolution' album, and with the more recent Remix edition. UK label partner 3Beat put full-focus on (one of the many LP highlight's) 'I Don't Deserve You' featuring Plump, with a whole host of new interpretations. The original lush piano (quite rightly) remains the linchpin to all the new cuts, as does the warming vocals of Plump. It's hard to choose from the mixes, Jerome Isma-Ae works it into his deep proggy sound, while the Italian stallion Giuseppe Ottaviani whips up a barrage of soaring melodies. Maor Levi & Bluestone also do the business in delivering power for the dance-floor. Plenty to get stuck into, successfully achieving the "tick every box" aim.

Review: Having changed tack with last year's folksy Acoustic set, progressive trance veterans Above & Beyond return to their trademark style on We Are All What We Need. Since first gate crashing the scene back in 2000, the Anjunabeats founders have become flag-bearers for the more melodious, musically expansive side of trance. There's plenty of that here, of course, from the spine-tingling beauty of "Blue Sky Action" and sparkling "Counting Down The Days", to the gorgeous builds of "Hello". With an instant "Essential New Tune" on Pete Tongs radio show (no mean feat for a trance artist), if this is anything to go by, his sound is taking a housier direction. With a strong a radio friendly vocal at the forefront, coming from the brilliant Trevor Guthrie who's tone and delivery take this skyward. Where the Original has crossover in mind, the monstrous remix from golden boys W&W certainly doesn't.. its an outright bass heavy assault on the senses, made to destroy all in its path. There's also; Antillas & Dankann, Giuseppe Ottaviani, and some guy called David Guetta providing remixes... You don't need to be told, this is essential!

Review: Progressive heads get stuck into this tasty treat, as for release number 21 on the wicked MicroCastle label they welcome back Cid Inc and for another double header EP following on from 'Our Benefactors' back in 2010. There is a real techno undercurrent to these, making the grooves impossible to stand still too and injecting energy and lift in to your sets at any time. The Original mix of Emotional Self is what's doing it most for us and will be hammered by everyone from Sasha to Zabelia, while the likes of Cattaneo are on the Microtrauma cut. On the flip 'Urban Biorhythm' is a little less dancefloor yet still with plenty going on to keep those late night smoke filled underground clubs bubbling.

Review: Over the past few years Australian songstress Emma Hewitt has steadily and credibly worked her way from features on producers records to becoming a name in her own right. Her lyrical talents are as strong and unique as her tone and delivery and here we have a classy array of new remixes for a track lifted from her 'Burn The Sky Down' album. Mikka thrashes out a heavily electro influence party starter, with Dabruck & Klein following suit. Both will do the damage however for us its fellow countryman TyDi who produces something more sympathetic to the Original.

Review: Two years on from his last album-length outing under the Lane 8 alias, tech house/progressive house fusionist Daniel Goldstein returns with an action-packed set featuring a mixture of songs and instrumentals. "Brightest Lights" is melodious, imaginative and musically intricate, with Goldstein effortlessly jogging between sun-baked mid-tempo workouts, icy synth-pop influenced goodness, cheery dancefloor workouts and the kind of glistening electronic goodness that sounds as good on the radio as it does in the club. At a notably dull and depressing time of the year, this kind of celebratory musical positivity is more than welcome.

Review: In trying to put together a compilation to mark two decades, the people behind the Glasgow label have decided not to equate 'classic' with 'anthem'. Granted, there are big unit-shifting hits here like "Positive Education" and "Right On, Right On", but there are also lesser known releases that still glitter and sparkle despite the passage of time. At one end of this forgotten gem spectrum there's the epic synths and searing bass of the Heavenly mix of Funk D'Void's "Diabla" and the E-tingling, wide eyed brilliance of Slam's proto-prog "Eterna", while at the other end, there's the deep, repetitive techno of Percy X's "X-Trak 1" and the emotive melodies and complex polyrhythms of Black Dog's "Cost 2". Added to this is Daft Punk's unreleased "Drive", whose rolling snares and wild siren riffs sound like "Rolling and Scratching" jacked up on angel dust and you've got an unforgettable way to celebrate 20 years.

Review: To help celebrate the expanded re-release of Brassica's 2014 debut album Man Is Deaf, the man himself has decided to drop a new single. "Get Down" is a bright and breezy affair, with interwoven synthesizer melodies, broken-house beats and flowery chords combining to create a colourful, ultra-positive mood. It seems well timed, with festival season set to get into full swing; certainly, it's mood enhancing capabilities are beyond doubt. It's accompanied by a similarly cheery and vibrant rework of album favourite "Tears I Can Afford" by Belfast boys Bicep. They combine clear Italian house, nu-disco and classic trance influences on a version that virtually pops, bubbles and spits from the speakers.

Review: Is Seth Troxler a romantic at heart? It's hard to say, but he does go off on an unexpected rant about 'this thing called love' for his contribution to Love Song. The fact that his vocals are surrounded by a Deetron's cool, trance synths and throbbing, bassy groove, make his utterances sound all the more convincing. Steve Bug has been put in charge of the remixes and does a fine job. Working under his Traffic Signs guise - a project that Bug started some time ago for his Chicago-style experiments - both versions see the German DJ/producer push the track into the kind of grinding, jacking sound that exudes pure carnal appeal.

Review: With a remix debut on Sound Pellegrino and a solo debut on Ed Banger, Parisian artist Boston is quite the hot tip right now. Taking the acid house and Chicago warehouse vibes of yore (think Pierre, Hardy, Green Velvet) and adding that French touch, there's something both retro and forward looking about this trio of tracks. "Closer" is the quirkiest of the pair with the strange crackles and warping on the cowbells and sleazy-assed groove. "Urnmae" is more of a nod to Mr Fingers, but done with a prog-like glow that wouldn't have gone amiss in a Sasha & Digweed set back in the proverbial. Last but not least, the title track "House Call" is a serious jack-attack. Keep listening...

Review: Everybody's main man when it comes to trance delivers another defining volume of his State Of Trance compilation series which once again delivers a smorgasbord of pop-infused classics to set off into the sunset with. Opening with Avicii's extended remix to Armin Van Buren's own vocal hit "Drowning" featuring Laura V, the compilation also takes in Paul Oakenfold's all time classic "Southern Sun" via Tiesto's epic extended remix, to Ferry Corsten deeper, four-to-the-floor remix of Moby's heartstring pulling "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?". A truly inspiring journey accompanied furthermore by Above & Beyond's "On My Way To Heaven". If there was a soundtrack for the road to the pearly gates, this would be it.

Review: Buddha Bar legends and all time chill out gurus Cafe Del Mar are respected at large here in Paul Van Dyk's remix treatment on Energy 52! Following the release of his ambient album, Escape Reality, last year, and the subsequent Guiding Light LP, Paul Van Dyke pores that sweet-sweet love into Energy 52's ultimate Ibiza track, "Cafe Del Mar". Marking the first new release on Superstition Records in almost two decades (can you believe that!?) - you don't get any more pure trance than the SHINE remix, given a touch more melodica in the edit. And for those who really want to take it to the end of the world it's all about the XOXO remix with its falling tempos and strings to take you to infinity and beyond. Legendary stuff all round.
