New World
Review: The future of Argy has arrived in the Afterlife. With a strong connection to the platform of late with albums and releases like Tataki, Pantheon and Aria next to the collaborative gem Higher Power - Argy has officially arrived. With this album in particular pitched as the artist's magnum opus, New World proves to be a fusion of human emotion inter-mixed with and AI innovation. Going large for those Afterlife sets no doubt, a techno futuristic and modern melodic Argy sends in 14 large scale tracks for the stadium space - ie "No One's Coming" and "Higher Power" - to the bad ass vampire acid in "Wilderness" or Juan Atkins Cyberton reflections in Tibet - Rad!

Toolroom Miami 2024
Various
Review: As Miami Winter Music Conference spins around for another year so does Toolroom's affiliated compilation showcasing why Mark Night's label remains at the precipice of mainstream club music. Bringing with it two full length DJ mixes and exclusive tracks from crew like Alex Kenji, Jerome Robins and Camila Jun, there's also banging numbers from legends like Green Velvet, Nicole Moudaber and Shadow Child next to Low Steppa and Tony Romera! ESSEL kicks off the compilation with the catchy choral loops of "The Edge", with other highlights to mention across some 50 tracks coming from Martin Ikin's drippin' "Make U Sweat", CASSIM's disco-tinged "Wanna Feel Something" and Carly Wilford's "The Dance". Time to dive into Miami 2024 - Toolroom style!

Fires
Played by: Avision
Review: Given that his Crosstown Rebels label debut, 'Horizon Red', was widely praised as one of the underground club cuts of 2023, hopes are naturally high for Made In Pete's speedy sequel. In its original form (track one), 'Fires' is a burning hot (sorry) blend of moody vocals (and vocalisations), shuffling house beats, rubbery synth-bass and meandering TB-303 acid motifs. He provides a tougher, darker and more after-hours-friendly 'Dub Mix' of his own, while the package also boasts two other revisions: a deeper, dreamier and more loose-limbed rework by UK scene stalwart Bushwacka!, and a deliciously dark, twisted and mind-mangling tribal house-goes-acid rework courtesy of Victor Calderone and Mykol.

YSD
Review: Veteran DJ and producer Nic Fanciulli lands at Hot Creations with his first original material for the label, the aptly titled "You Sure Do" EP. This two-tracker wastes no time showcasing Fanciulli's ability to craft dancefloor bombs that pay homage to the past while sounding fresh and current. The opening track, "YSD," is a full-on disco-infused house anthem. Fanciulli lays down a foundation of massive basslines and a pounding drum groove, creating an atmosphere guaranteed to get bodies moving. The track isn't just a nostalgic throwback, though. Fanciulli's crisp production and innovative sound design ensure "YSD" feels just as relevant on today's dancefloors. Following up, "We R Bass" takes things in a slightly different direction. Here, pulsating kick drums and sharp snares drive the energy, while warped vocal samples and twisting synths add a layer of intrigue. The track builds to a mesmerizing sonic journey, keeping the listener engaged throughout.

Global Underground: Select #9
Various
Review: Global Underground's' Select' series acts as a kind of annual nod to all the electronic music that floats their boat, with each digital download edition offering two (uncredited) CD-length mixes and full then versions of each included cut. 2024's edition - volume nine in total - is naturally packed to the rafters with tasty tracks from both established producers and rising stars. That means an attractive, immersive and frequently emotive mix of ambient-tinged deep electro (Pablo Bolivar & Nacho Sanchez), evocative tech-house (Dixon re-working Nandu's 'Around', Guy J's hypnotic, acid-flecked 'State of Trance'),pitched-down neo-trance dreaminess (Joris Voorn editing Solee), grandiose big room workouts (Fur Coat & Lexur), 21st century acid house (Phunkadelica remixing Damon Jee), and uplifting progressive house (D-Nox).

Hot Mess
Review: Hilit Kolet makes her debut on Rekids with Hot Mess! Featuring remixes from the legendary Mike Dunn, it follows her own versions of Terry Farley & Wade Teo's "Why We Dance". It's her first EP for Radio Slave's label and the title track is a driving anthem that expertly blends marching rhythms with iconic house vocals, heightened in the 'Even Hotter Mix' which as its namesake suggests, spices up the intensity. Moving on, Chicago house maestro Mike Dunn infuses some stylish flair into his take, slowing down the groove, crafting an infectious bassline, and honouring the original's captivating vocals with warehouse style. Boom.

Tribute
Review: Gifted Italian DJ and producer Chesster unveils his latest record, the tell-tailing Tribute EP, released via PIV - think artists like S.A.M, DJ Steaw, Chris Stussy and more. Busting out with the melodies in "Hot & Lost" to some package nostalgia in "Dance Mania," Chesster goes deep. "Tribute" pays homage to classic US house with that classic garage tinge and UK rave sentiments and funk-infused rhythms. Additionally, grab the the Prunk remix which focuses heavily on a dirty, deeper pulsating bassline with head nods to the Dirty Bird label.

Koltercamp : Best Bits
Review: As the title suggests, this quietly impressive compilation draws together the "best bits" of Johannes Kolter's KOLTERCAMP imprint, a digital-only label he's long used as a vehicle for his own productions. In some ways, it feels like an introduction to the Cologne artist's work - or one side of it, at least (he also has the more rugged KOLTRAX series and guest releases on other labels). Highlights include the Alicia Myers-sampling disco-house chunkiness of 'Be Real', the insanely funky, P-funk sampling US house bump of 'Get Sexy', the sun-splashed jazz-house deepness of 'Duke', the effortlessly soulful shuffle of 'Sunny Days' and the spacey deep house wonder that is 'Let You Go'. An impressive collection of Kolter cuts all told.

Kind Of... Robotnick
Review: "Kind of... Robotnick" the third installment in the Simple Music series, presents a diverse collection of tracks that sees the Italian legend provide both instrumental and vocal numbers. With tracks like "Lipstick" exploring the complexities of personal image and "What You Think of Me" delving into the insecurities of modern life, the lyrical narratives add depth and relatability to the album's themes. "Kiss Me Love Goodbye" offers a poignant reflection on the banality of contemporary romance, juxtaposed with a woman's refusal to succumb to trite expressions of affection. Meanwhile, dance-floor oriented instrumentals like "Moving Light" and "Frenzy Games" infuse energy and rhythm, showcasing Robotnick's adeptness at crafting infectious beats.

Spiritual Milk (The Remixes Part 2)
Review: Award-nominated British producers Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala, better known as Camelphat, showcase yet more growth since their last album Spiritual Milk that was filled with emotive lyrics, serene ambient sounds, and infectious basslines. This remix album however opens with a Fideles mix that gets drummy and percussive and very reminiscent to Plastikman's legendary "Spastilk". Oostil throws down an EDM inspired tech house banger mix of "In Your Eyes", while Tigerblind looks to old school rave and hardcore in its remix of "Compute". Lastly Dorian Kraft goes deep and progressive in his mix to "Embers". Keep chewing the Camelphat.

Visions
Review: Paris-based producer Vitess continues his flow of music following releases on Up The Stuss, LOCUS and Shall Not Fade, in addition to his own Retro Futura imprint. Vitess' latest five-track special, Visions, for Rossi's HOMEGROWN label provides the artist with a second appearance there - making himself known with the stand out track on this EP, "Blue Vision", somewhat already anthemic in its appeal thanks it synth-driven energy and dancefloor operandi. Turning up the sultry disco fever and French touch vibes in "Jami Rocaille" - other numbers like "First Night" so richly remind us of The Ones "Flawless", while "Big Sound" throws in some dubbier house action. And for that bassline and acid session check out "Drive Me Crazy".

We Come EP
Review: Returning to Damien Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels label, Jonathan Kaspar presents his latest EP, "We Come", delving into melodic techno realms. With prior contributions to other major indies like Cocoon and Kompakt, Kaspar's signature confidently navigates a big room, dubby trance, and crunchy electro sound with straight up house inspirations. Resisting easy classification, Kaspar weighs up his genres, taking in "Flash Point" as a standout track, with ducking and distortion, plus sidechain, central to the mix here next to some lovely syncopated stabs Additionally, Paul Brenning's rendition of "Transposed Sky" deserves some close attention for its unique flip treatment. In Crosstown we trust.

Dots And Pearls 8
Various
Review: The eighth instalment of Cocoon's Dots And Pearls compilation series starts on a light note. JOSS' "Assessing" is a melodic techno track powered by cascading snares and swirling pads. In a similar style is Emanuel Satie's "When I First Met You (I Knew You Were The One)", where angelic voices and soaring strings make for an uplifting track. There's an edgier sensibility on Denis Horvat & Skarn's chugging "Triii", reflected also on Aocram & Ramsey Neville's acid-led "Brooklyn Structure".
The mood continues to darken with the EBM influences of Alex Bau's grinding "Antidot", while the ever-reliable Redshape resurfaces with the pulsating "Ghost Story". But it's only a temporary situation and Harald Bjork's "Aluco" rounds off the release with an ominous tranced-out track.

Raumgleiter Re-Release 2024
Review: This 2024 reissue of an all time and much love classic Raumgleiter by Der Dritte Raum presents an exceptional concept trance album that remains ahead of its time, defying the stigma once and sometimes attached to the genre. Highlighting tracks like "Hale Bopp" and "Polarstern," which made waves in big rooms at the time, the real gem lies in "Lava," transitioning seamlessly from acid builds to progressive trance, which then leads perfectly into "Hale Bopp." Der Dritte Raum's hypnotic beats and catchy melodies went far to transport listeners to other dimensions back in the day, and a fresh 2024 re-up does the same thing- groundbreaking stuff for trance enthusiasts.

Nightdubbing Part II
Review: Monty Luke's follow up to his latest REkids release arrives via Nightdubbing and in the form first of all as "Supernova" - a deep blend of spacey textures with retro vocal samples. "Starstorms" delves further into the cosmic unknown with driving bass rhythms and raw pads, while "New World / Old Future" showcases Luke's mastery of scratch-like drums and intricate melodies. "Avantgarde Dancehall" adds a psychedelic twist with wonky sonics, while "Travelling 'Round The Sun'" closes the release with dub-rooted drums and spoken word poetry. Dope. Drawing from his Detroit roots, Luke's futuristic soundscapes continue to captivate, pushing boundaries into mainstream techno and cultural storytelling at its finest.

Enter Machina Remixes
Review: With artwork reflecting some classic James Bond-isms, Mia Mendi makes a triumphant return to Watergate Records only months after her debut. Back in remix form, no less - TH;EN, Widerberg, and Moonwalk are employed to take on Mendi's production suite, with the 'melodic techno specialists' collectively injecting some sidewinding dynamics into her originals. TH;EN goes big room on the stutter in a remix of "Distant Present" while Widerberg pulls out massive swathes of acid and huge lunges of bass reworking the title track, with Moonwalk crowning itself as the sundowner epic of this release for sure.

Captivate EP
Review: Straight up techno burners here from Co-Fusion with the Captivate EP on Harthouse - delivering three undeniable bangers for your arsenal. Kicking off with the title track, it's a mean kick and bass combo that does the business here, allowing for some industrial percussion and off kilter synths stabs too boot. "Stone Steel" opts for a grungier body music vibe thanks to its punky bassline, while "Hexagon", in its syncopated and dubbed-out rhythm, goes full boar warehouse techno.

Rotten 2.0
Review: Oliver Huntemann returns to his label with a release that explores familiar and unexpected themes. "Rotten 2.0" revisits his signature sound. Over a steely kicks and bleak synths, he drops a cavernous bass and a ponderous vocal sample. These elements come together to make for a classic Huntemann track - it's darkly evocative and menacing and shot through with a clubby aesthetic. Alex Stein's take on "Rotten" follows a similar path. Upping the pace, he deploys a throbbing bass to devastating effect. And then there's the original version of "Rotten". Set to a mid-tempo pace, it features a dystopian narrative about the future - sounding like Huntemann's own cyberpunk take on trip-hop.
