Review: Australian artist Ben Smith, known by his stage name Temple, is bringing a fresh sound to the music scene. His upcoming EP, "Who You Are," blends the classic vibes of disco with the futuristic energy of techno. This debut release marks the launch of Temple Musiq, Smith's own record label dedicated to his musical creations. The headline attraction is undoubtedly title track 'Who You Are' (featuring Quartz Pistol), an acid-fired, cowbell-laden fusion of cheery nu-disco and nostalgic house sounds with added breathy female vocals. Prins Thomas remixes, rolling out the warehouse-ready elements (including Temple's trippy acid lines) before introducing a maelstrom of synth lines and spiralling electronics later on. Review: Despite the title there's no particular discernible 'summer' theme to this latest batch of re-edits from German maestro Alkalino, but that's probably just as well - after all, no one wants to hear 4/4'd up remakes of holiday 'classics' like 'The Birdy Song' or 'Agadoo', do they?! Instead the Audaz boss serves up another typically classy bunch of reworkings, drawing on sources that include Change ft Jocelyn Brown's 'Angel In My Pocket' ('I Remember All So Clearly'), Lenny Williams' 'Midnight Girl' ('The Music Plays And Plays'), Central Line's 'Walking Into Sunshine' ('I Got To Get Away') and Talking Heads' 'Seen And Not Seen' ('A Larger Forehead'), to name but a few.

Review: Pete Le Freq returns to Alpaca Edits with four more reworks of vintage cuts. Getting the ball rolling is 'Groove On', which takes on Willie 'Beaver' Hale's 1980 cut of the same name, and it's fair to say a bit more time and effort has gone into this re-edit than most, not least because the tempo's been upped noticeably. 'Satisfied', which revisits a Dynasty jam that was first released on Solar in 1979, is another edit that transforms the original significantly while 'Singers On the Stand' draws on The Joubert Singers' classic 'Stand On The Lord' from 1985. That leaves only the source of 'Sweeter' unidentified, but it's a pleasant little disco/boogie workout regardless.

Review: Magnetic Family's debut release, "Songs For The Open Air" on Lost Palms, is a breath of fresh air for anyone seeking a dose of laid-back, lo-fi goodness. These four tracks, previously only available on Youtube where they garnered millions of plays, finally see a proper release on vinyl, digital, and streaming platforms. The EP's title perfectly captures its essence. Lush, ambient textures and hazy vocals paint vivid sonic landscapes that evoke feelings of open fields, warm sunshine, and carefree vibes. Opener "Haze" sets the tone with its swirling synths and woozy vocals, creating a dreamy atmosphere that lulls you in. "Aerial" picks up the pace slightly, with a more rhythmic groove and hypnotic melodies. "North Circular" injects a touch of urban energy, while maintaining the overall chilled-out vibe. The EP closes with "A Love," a beautifully melancholic track that leaves a lasting impression.

Review: Brazil's Hugo Doche returns to East London-based label The Disco Express with three fresh slices of contemporary disco/disco-house. 'Hit The Tracks' features a very pop-oriented vocal from Sansy but also sports some excellent sax work, the Kria McKenzie-sporting 'This Feeling' has something of the lounge-y vibe of late 70s Brazilian disco but also comes accompanied by a significantly more house-ified remix from Birdee that for this reviewer is the standout track on the EP, while finally 'Dance' features Carla Sceno on mic duties and rocks crisp 4/4s and a fat funk bassline.

Review: The 2024 Ibiza season may seem like it's still a long way off, but not for Get Physical - and seminal label has put together a soundtrack for this year's White Island parties. As its title suggests, Computer Madness' "Traveling To The Planet Rock" is influenced by old school electro - and includes vocodered vocals, a funk bass and wild stabs unravel over rolling 808s. Corbi's "Wave Machine" is also inspired by electro, but on this occasion, acid lines ebb and flow seductively over the undulating groove . OMRI opts for a different approach on "This Is A Test". Based on a low-slung, throbbing bass, its dubby sound effects are nothing short of hypnotic. Trutopia's "Peace" is more sedate, with glacial synths and soulful vocals merged with minimal drums.

Review: Since making his debut way back in 2022, Franck Roger has served up a lot of exceptionally good deep, soulful and spiritual house. In its' original mix form (track six), 'Enchanted', featuring Shawn Chappelle, is another high-grade treat - a shuffling, soft-focus vocal house number rich in warming chords, Osunlade-esque spiritual house percussion, meandering guitar solos and chunky bass. The accompanying remix package is naturally very strong too. Fred Everything delivers two takes: a subtly jazz, boogie synth-sporting vocal revision built around bouncy Afro-house beats, and a deliciously dreamy, weightier and more bassline-driven 'Dub'. DJ Spinna dips the tempo slightly on his more relaxed and laidback deep house versions (vocal and instrumental takes are both included), while Demarkus Lewis opts for a more immersive, thickset vibe on his full vocal interpretation.

It marks a comeback for the producer after a notable debut collaboration with Harry Wolfman in 2016. Known for his unique blend of electronica, deep soundscapes and lush and organic deep house, Goddard has graced labels like Oath, Razor N Tape and Church on his musical journey, presenting here for DT a captivating mini-album featuring beautifully crafted ambient and electronica pieces alongside three energetic tracks. Inspired by a night at the White Hotel in Salford watching Skee Mask, Goddard goes deep on six compositions, offering listeners a journey through a new age sound of house to prick the ears of Legowelt fans for sure. Review: Running Back boss Gerd Janson has been a fan of Raphael Schon for some time. Last year, he reissued the German producer's 2021 breakthrough hit, 'Fiesta 2000', on the Misfit Melodies offshoot. Now he's gone further still, offering up an expansive EP of brand-new music by the producer, all of which is shot through with references to dance music's storied past. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the sparkling positivity of the 303 bass-powered 'Bearhit', the riff-happy retro-futurist smoothness of 'Do You Like That' - whose breakdowns and drops are suitably excitable - and the kaleidoscopic, near techno-tempo joy explosion that is 'Distant City Transport'. The more nu-disco and maximal house influenced 'Sometimes I Miss You' is also superb.

Review: Boblebad - that'll be Norwegian for 'hot tub' or 'jacuzzi', then - goes by the name of Ulf Moen Denneche in real life and hails, unsurprisingly, from Oslo. Here he comes to Citizens Of Vice with three tracks of (mostly) heavily electronic nu disco, with the title track a jaunty, lolloping affair sporting some Daft Punk-esque guitar flourishes, 'Just Think About That Feeling' a slightly deeper, spacier number built for late-hours play, and 'At The Beach' the quirkiest and least synth-tastic cut of the three with its sampled seaside sounds, insistent hand percussion, Spanish guitars and kiddy vox.

Review: Danish producer Mads Dalholt is perhaps best known as one-half of Dalholt & Langkilde, whose 2015 album 'Sur Plus' is regarded as something of a classic in Balearic and downtempo circles. Now he comes with his first solo album and shows that he hasn't lost his touch, as he serves up 12 tracks that are laidback without ever getting boring, and mellow without ever getting overly polite or twee. 'Sitarhara' is a particular highlight to these ears with its hazy, subcontinental feel, while elsewhere 'Gui Tabu' evidences Latin influences and cuts like 'Drummer' and 'Jatak' look to African music for inspiration. It all adds up 1 hour 11 minutes of chilled listening that's well worth investigating even if downtempo vibes aren't usually where you're at.

Review: Umbo (Croatia's Mario Lovakovic) has chalked up releases on Timewarp and Kraak and now comes to Germany's Resense with two re-edits of tracks from Chess, Sun Records and Stax veteran Little Milton's 1969 'Grits And Groceries' album. That album's title track, here reworked as 'Grits', was written by Titus Turner in 1955 as 'Mona Lisa Was A Man' and has been recorded by many blues, soul and R&B artists under a variety of titles over the years; '23h' is much less confusing, being simply the new name for 'Twenty-Three Hours'. Anyway, suffice to say the sheer power of the late R&B legend's voice makes either a cert on funk and soul floors!

Review: Melbourne, Australia-based DJ/producer Ken Walker - the possessor of perhaps THE best artist moniker in the game - follows up last summer's debut full-length 'Discopolis' with a second volume that's every bit as essential. Rocking an overall vibe somewhere between contemporary (rather than 'nu') disco and disco-house, the album opens with 'What In The World', which nods to The Police's 'When The World Is Running Down', and closes with 'Saxophonica', which marries the risque spoken vocal from Jimmy Z feat Dr Dre's 'Funky Flute' (which also appears on 'Blow It') to the sax line from Men At Work's 80s hit 'Who Can It Be Now?'. It's fair to say our Ken isn't averse to dropping the odd familiar sample, then: in fact, the 15 cuts here blur the lines between sampling and re-editing. But trust us, the dancefloor's going to be far too busy dancing to worry about that.

Review: Not be confused with Nang disco veterans Kim & Buran, Buran are the Manchester duo of Ian Scott and Josef Wretham, and on this four-track EP for Insult To Injury they showcase a sound that sits somewhere between acid house, dark disco and techno, with analogue synths firmly at the heart of all they do. The first track, 'Alnitak', is a pure vintage-style acid workout, before things get a little more esoteric as 'Alnilam' throws world music influences into the pot. 'Mintaka' then pushes us firmly into techno territory, with Void Complet rounding out the EP by giving 'Alnitak' a spaced-out nu-disco makeover.

Review: The Occupants series is a split release project from Science Cult, the label that artists like Carl Finlow, Cygnus and Umek's Zeta Reticula project all call home. This first volume covers electro, but in the broadest sense. Thee J Johanz' "Woodpecker" is an acid-fried break beat track. At the other end of the spectrum, Aura Nox's "Mutiny On The Voyage To Azimut" sees the Science Cult artist voyage to the sound's outer limits. Remaining in that space is Blixaboy's dub-tinged "Bushido Initiative". St. Theodore presents a more ominous sound on "No Future", an arrangement that is led by a punishing sub-bass, and for a pure futuristic hit, it is hard to better the skeletal rhythms of Arsonist Recorder's "Heat Seek".

Review: Since establishing the imprint during the first COVID-19 lockdown, Lauren Ritter has used the Rift Vision imprint as a vehicle for her progressively more impressive productions. This two-tracker is the first of two EPs she has slated for release on the label in 2024. There are two original productions to savour, each backed by an accompanying remix. 'Antigone' is a fine slice of dreamy, immersive, sub-heavy deep house tailor-made for summer sunrises and sunsets, which is later given a snappier, faster and jauntier spin by Zone+. Ritter continues to mine the more melodious, colourful and loved-up end of the dancefloor spectrum on 'Sarus'. Powel provides the remix, re-framing the track as a spacey, druggy and gently acid-flcked tech-house roller.
