Review: Released twenty years ago, "Dark Manoeuvres" was an anomaly in Envoy's work. While it contained musical elements like the rest of his catalogue, the strings were darker and the mood more foreboding. Two decades on, Soma has tasked a new wave of producers with reworking this underground classic. At one end of the spectrum Dax J from Ear to Ground turns in a high-paced, percussive affair, with insistent snares and pounding kicks propelling the track forward. At the other end, there's the dissected percussion and moody dub textures of Berghain resident Norman Nodge's reshape. Tensal follows Nodge with a dub-influenced but heavier, filtered approach. The founders of From Another Mind, Obscure Shape & SHDW, close the release with a version that keeps the focus on the original's soaring, moody strings.
