Review: Denver's Funk Hunk may not be the hardest-working man in the re-edit scene, though he's certainly amongst the most productive. Happily, it seems that regardless of the frequency of his releases, the producer's famed high quality threshold remains intact. Certainly, this latest EP contains some real dancefloor bombs. Particularly impressive is his affectionately stuttering, heavily chopped-up tweak of T-Connection disco-funk shuffler "Time is Short", which revolves around the manipulation of a wealth of short, sweet samples. Elsewhere, Raydio's decidedly Balearic, sun-kissed boogie-funk jam "Until The Morning Comes" gets transformed into a rolling chunk of midtempo disco-house, while D-Train's sweet cover of all-time classic "Walk On By" is given a strings-and-synth heavy makeover that wisely emphasizes Hubert Eaves III's original instrumentation.

Review: The long-standing Editorial stable have welcomed many choice boogie and disco heads to do the honours in reviving classic gems from the seemingly endless mine of 70s and 80s wares, and they're at it once again with the Good Fot Get Down collection. Regular contributors Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee keep things lightly shuffling and laid back on "Let U Go" while The Owl gets into a more stripped and stiff floor-focused funk. The Funk District have more clear intentions in getting the party started with "Disco Dynamite", while Spankie Hazard gets a little jazzy on "Party". Review: Denver-based Funk Hunk has never been the most prolific of re-editors, though his sporadic releases tend to be decent. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on "Hunk's Got The Answer", his first outing for Danny Worrall's Masterworks Music label. Check first the gnarled disco-rock camp of "Get Up", before admiring the elastic slap-bass motifs at the heart of loopy disco-house workout "Gotcha". "Hunk's Got The Answer" is a languid, tastefully tweaked rearrangement of an obscure, jazz guitar-laden deep disco treat, while "Take A Little More" is a cut-up, house style edit of a bona fide disco anthem. As if that lot wasn't enough to get your pulse racing, "Wot" sees our hunky hero successfully rework a Tom Tom Club style slice of low-slung NYC headiness.

Review: Re-edit specialists Handshakes are back with more surefire disco arsenal. This time presenting Denver's Funk Hunk (again!) another one to watch on the disco re-edit front of late. He lends his midas touch to Grace Jones' 1979 classic "On Your Knees" giving it a good and proper thumping revision for modern dancefloors. There is also another familiar classic that needs no introduction that's given an ergonomic re-rub on "Your Love Is Heaven And Hell (Funk Hunk Re-edit)". Lovers of Late Nite Tuff Guy or Gay Marvine should definitely take notice of this guy.

Review: There's no shortage of disco re-edit collections on the market right now, so props to Funk Hunk for doing things a little differently! Where most re-editors will simply loop up a track's most familiar sections and whack a 4/4 kick underneath, Funk Hunk takes almost the opposite approach, often all but abandoning the original vocal and teasing out the instrumental sections instead. What you end up with are nine cuts that, in many cases, are naggingly familiar before you've quite realised why, with sources including Phyllis Hyman, Frankie Smith, Love & Kisses, Gepy & Gepy, Vicky D and, coming right up to date, Daft Punk. A welcome break from the re-edit norm.

Review: Mexican party-starter Fernando Mendoza AKA The Funk District has been in a rich vein of form since making his debut on Hotbox Boogie back in 2015. Two years and umpteen releases later, he pops up on the Fingerman-helmed Hot Digits Music for the very first time. He kicks things off with the bumping, hip-hop style funk breakbeats, wild harmonica and guttural male vocals of swamp funk rework "Get Up! Get Back!", before underpinning a sleazy disco-funk gem with bustling house beats on "Close to the Ground". 'Shacked", meanwhile, is a stomping, filter-heavy rearrangement of one of the best-loved, break-driven disco-funk slammers (later covered by A Certain Ratio, fact fans) and "Rock On" is a no nonsense, tooled-up disco-rock banger.

Review: Rob Halgren is resident DJ at Denver nightclub Neon Baby, and as Funk Hunk specialises in repurposing vintage funk, disco and boogie grooves for contemporary dancefloors. With 22 tracks on offer, there's no space here to identify the source material for every one - it'd also be a fool's errand, because he's dug admirably deep and most would have us beat anyway! But what you end up with is a magazine full of fresh ammo for your funk machine gun, with the emphasis on fat-ass basslines and handclaps while the vocals range from sweet female harmonies to blues-y male growls. Worth investigating for sure.

Review: The Funk District is Fernando Mendoza from Cancun, Mexico. This is funk on steroids basically: respectful edits of fresh and funky grooves, that are made to move people all around the world. Following up hot releases for Editorial and Hot Digits: this guy is certainly one to watch! From that distillation of a very familiar groove on "Love To Fly" which takes some slo-mo boggie action of a certain classic to new heights, or the neon-lit funk attack of "The Spaceship" (which propels into the stratosphere) or the soulful love action of "Come On Get Up" that lights up the dancefloor: it is clear that that Central America has it really going on at the moment.

Review: Given the title and the hefty track count here, you might be expecting a collection of 50 hastily thrown-together generic club "bangers" - but nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Italian stalwart Ferreri has put together a truly excellent selection of house tracks that span from the very deepest, jazziest of grooves (see his own 'Jazz Imprint', for starters), to raw soul/disco strutters (Zove's 'Feeling', Soul Divide's 'Hanky Panky') to bump 'n' grind garage jams (Chemars' 'Deep At Night', to unashamed party starters like Filta Freqz' 'Dope Demand' and 'Da Hitman', which make free with big chunks lifted from classics by King Bee and Cutty Ranks/Eek-A-Mouse, respectively. Featuring scene faves like Johnick, Italobros and Jazzman Wax, this compilation is an absolute must.

Review: Germany's Philly Vanilli has been around since forever, it seems, but to these ears - and they're ears that have reviewed plenty of his previous releases for this very website - this new set of reworks for Deep Disco Edits is the best work he's turned out so far. He's working with some very well-known source tracks here, so there's no point insulting your intelligence by enumerating them: suffice to say that somehow he's managed to tease the funk out of these much-loved classics in a way that, in some cases, even the original artists didn't manage. Ohio Players' 'Love Rollercoaster' was, admittedly, always a personal fave of yours truly but in PV's hands it becomes a truly exceptional 10 minutes of sheer funk joy, while his reworkings of Marvin, Kool & The Gang and The Temptations are equally impressive. Essential!

Review: In recent years, Paris seems to have become awash with disco re-editors, most of whom - and in particular the well-loved Venice Beach and KS French - seem to specialise in adding a little filter-heavy house bounce to their '70s and '80s source material. Lord Funk - real-name Dalmasso Romain - is part of the same Parisian scalpel set, and here pops up on Marilin following a number of outings on Boogie Butt. Choose between the lolloping disco-funk sunshine of "Get On Down", the tough boogie looseness of "How Sweet The Love Can Be" - complete with bongo workouts and killer synthesizer lines - and the cuddly Balearic disco sweetness of "Black Lagoon (Retouch)".

Review: Breakbeat Paradise first released the various artists EP 'Funk Originals' back in April 2017; now, nearly three years later, it's back with a new set of remixes. The EP as a whole is very much the proverbial game of two halves: the four original tracks are aimed fair and square at lovers of "new old" funk and soul (think Speedometer, Dap Kings, etc), while the three remixes ('Stand Up' doesn't get one, oddly, but its P-funk/Zapp-isms will delight funkateers nonetheless) are altogether more squelchy and electronic-sounding, and as such will be better suited to broken beat or funk-breaks sets.

Review: Jack Of All Trades - It's the album that keeps on giving. Released this time last year it's undergone the full instrumental treatment and two remix EPs. Now this, the nu-funk piece de resistance: a floor-tickling collection of the previous remixes plus a whole load more. Highlights include Skeewif's Young MC-meets-Shaft-on-Mancini Avenue flavoured remix of "Time To Get Loose" and Dads On Display's Koan Sound style mix of smooth 80s b2b screaming midrange bass on "Closer To The Edge". But at 18 tracks that's the tip of this eclectic, open-all-hours party fest. It's all exceedingly good.
