Review: You can always count on west coast bass house institution Dirtybird for the gig guns for the main room at peak time. Their next one comes from respected producer German Brigante, who follows up last year's Chronicles EP on the label. The man from Malaga is as on-point as ever with the old school groove of "Solitude" taking the best of old school acid house adapted to a modern format. It's more like the producer we know on the moody bass heavy bounce of "You Know" with its seething Reese bassline lurking above a backdrop of thunderous drums and cheeky hip-hop vocal loops - expect this one to destroy a dancefloor near you soon.
Review: Separated by the Alboran Sea and the Straits of Gilbraltar, Spain and Morocco are close enough for each country's musical culture to influence the other. It's fitting then that this five-tracker from Spanish artists German Brigante and Yamil was not only inspired by Moroccoan Gnawa music, but also features remixes from two of Morocco's top DJs. Opener 'Kibo', featuring the vocals of Medhi Nassouli, is frankly brilliant - a driving, exotic, gnawa-house monster with tons of killer percussion and low-slung dub disco bass, while the Mr I.D remix takes the track up a notch or two towards peak-time territory. Elsewhere, 'Basari' is a more electronic, tech-house-tinged take on gnawa/house fusion, with a thrillingly squelchy, intoxicating and mind-altering rework from Anime K.
Review: Get To Know AKA Larry Holcome cut his teeth as the in-house mixing and mastering engineer at Cr2 Records, and made his production debut in the mid-00s with a string of breakbeat releases on labels like Botchit & Scarper and Spin Out Records. None of which would give you any reason to suppose that his latest release, which comes on his own Future Sound Of Then label, would be a dusty, lo-fi, mid-paced Balearic kinda jam that makes extensive use of a Janet Jackson vocal sample, but such is indeed the case. Solid ammunition for all those afternoon, poolside, warm-up and BBQ sets this summer.
