Review: Washington, DC-based Sol Power Records specialise in "deep sounds inspired by Planet Earth", or to put it another way, deep house that draws extensively on Latin and African music for inspiration. And here, the Sol Power All-Stars bring us three tracks in a total of five different mixes that exemplify the label's ethos perfectly, replete as they are with complex hand percussion, chanted tribal vox, stuttering Latin rhythms and all the other elements you'd expect. The duo are as persistent as they are talented at compiling music series with a socio-political edge, always hinting at some sort of cultural tension. With this new piece of work, they've decided to showcase the deeper side of funk, the sort you wouldn't have found on Top Of The Pops. More than anything, this is a marvellous collector's item, filled with tunes from peeps like Mr Clean & The Cleansers, Jim Pipkin, Al Sinclair, and many other artists from the late 60s who were not as fortunate in their domination of the mainstream as other singers and producers.
