Review: Aussie disco don Dr Packer has been Glitterbox Recordings' go-to remixer for some time now. Three years ago, the label opened up its archives and allowed him free reign to rework whatever he wanted, releasing the results as Dr Packer's Different Strokes. This belated sequel follows a similar blueprint, collecting together a wealth of remixes as well as a couple of non-stop DJ mixes of the same material. Much of the music is authentically disco-centric - think organic instrumentation, swirling strings and rushing vocals - with just enough grunt to please those dancefloors the require 21st century low-end weight. Highlights include a glassy-eyed take on Aeroplane's 'Love on Hold', a sing-along version of Lemelle's boogie gem 'You Got Something Special' and a handful of fine rubs of the Shapeshifters.

Review: It would be fair to say that Sure Thing's revivalist '80s electrofunk gem "Holding You Tight" has become something of an anthem since it was first released back in 2012, something no doubt assisted by a Defected reissue two years ago. This time round, there's another chance to savour the Extended DJ Mix - arguably still the strongest version of DJ Die, Christophe and Joker's slick original - plus three previously unheard rubs from Aussie disco deviant Dr Packer. His two main mixes (one full vocal, the other instrumental) retain the synthesizer-heavy feel of the original, whilst adding some rich new chords and a chunkier, snare-heavy rhythm track. For those DJs who like to get creative, Packer has also provided an extended, delay-laden accapella.

Review: For their latest trip into celebratory disco territory, Glitterbox Recordings has asked Aussie rework fiend Dr Packer to get busy with a quartet of dancefloor classics. He begins by putting his stamp of LaTrece's Mark Kinchen-produced 1993 cover of Alicia Myers' "I Want To Thank You", giving it a breezier and more boogie-influenced feel, before moving further towards hybrid disco/soulful house territory on a fine rub of Shuya Okino's 2011 jam "Still in Love". Flip to the virtual flipside for a pitched down, electrofunk-fired rework of ATFC's "Bad Habit" that's more in keeping with the 1985 Jenny Burton cut on which it was based, and a gently beefed-up take on Soul Rebels' tasty cover of Rene and Angela boogie classic "I'll Be Good".

Review: Glitterbox resident Dr Packer is a leading light of the contemporary disco scene, while Dave Lee was arguably THE key architect of the whole post-house disco phenomenon in the first place. So when the former helms a compilation on the latter's label, you'd expect great things, and suffice to say you're very unlikely to be disappointed. Hell, for this writer the deep n' sultry JN Revival Mix of early 90s classic 'Do What You Feel' is worth the price of admission on its own, but with Packer's own remixes of label favourites making up over a third of the tracklist, the collection as a whole is pretty much unmissable.

Review: Back in the day, D.C LaRue was one of the undoubted stars of the underground disco scene, so it makes perfect sense that Z Records boss Dave Lee has bagged a swathe of new remixes. Lee dons the familiar Joey Negro alias to kick things off with a brilliant extended interpretation of all-time LaRue fave "Cathedrals", before Ron Basejam wraps spacey synth solos and fluttering flutes around a killer slow disco groove on his fantastic rub of "Do You Want The Real Thing". Elsewhere, Glitterbox regular Dr Packer provides a rolling, delay-laden take on "Indiscreet" rich in killer disco interpretation that could well be the EP's highlight, while the Idjut Boys serve up a typically trippy, dub disco powered "Beats" version of "Let Them Dance".

Review: The release of Dave Lee's annual Essentials collection on Z Records - a kind of "best of the year" from his now 30-year-old imprint - is fast becoming as much of a Christmas tradition as family arguments, disappointing presents and undercooked turkey. Predictably the 2020 edition is once again up to scratch, with the much-loved Essex producer showcasing some seriously good disco, deep house, soulful house and revivalist dancefloor jazz-funk. Review: As usual, Z Records' annual compilation of catalogue tracks doing business over on the White Isle is packed to the rafters with high-grade dancefloor treats. It opens with a sweltering Dave Lee and Harry Romero mix of Z Factor's '90s house classic 'Ride The Rhythm' and ends with Lee's string-laden disco rework of Foreal People's 'Does It Feel Good To You'; in between, you'll find an attractive mixture of bouncy Afro-boogie revivalism (Emmaculate's extended mix of 'Dougswana' by Dave Lee as Doug Willis), reworked Z Records classics (Atjazz giving a classic-but-percussive deep house feel to Jakatta's 'American Dream'), super-soulful house (Wipe The Needle),driving disco-house (Prospect Park) and breezy piano house (Sean McCabe's 'Italo Piano' mix of Soul Dhamma). As the old clich? goes, this is genuinely "all killer, no filler".

Review: As the title suggests, this fantastic - and let's face it, pleasingly epic - compilation showcases some of the many disco-centric cuts in the Z Records vaults, throwing in a few exclusives (see Dave Lee's fantastic, hybrid disco-boogie rework of Firefly's 'Love is Gonna Be on Your Side') for good measure. Such is the high-quality threshold that picking stand outs is tough, but our picks of a very strong bunch include the slick, boogie-funk brilliance of Crackazat's 'Sensationalized', Larry Levan's vintage, delay-heavy synth dub of Johnny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love', the stomping disco-house release of 'Gotta Thing (2021 Remaster)' by Foreal People, Taana Gardner and Dave Lee, and John Morales' epic rework of Sean McCabe's 'Love For Life'. As the old saying goes, this is all killer and no filler.
