Review: Random Alias drops a third release on Breakfast on Mars. Influenced by Detroit techno and old school electro, First Rate is sure to appeal to fans of underground dance music. A case in point is "Keep Me High", where a frenetic, wiry rhythm acts as the backdrop for eerie, swirling synths. The title track resounds to steely 808s and crashing snares, with Random Alias weaving in searing acid lines. On "Solo In Space", that approach features a punishing ebm-style bass. "Restless" sees Random Alias focus on a similarly malevolent sound, while "Galactic Power" closes out the release with a menacing swagger and bleepy tones.
Review: Like us, you are probably excited yet confused at the same time upon seeing this - Random Noise Generation are Lenny and Lawrence Burden (with their brothers Lorne, Lynell and Lance as revolving members) who are indeed - Octave One! As far as we're concerned, the more of the Burden Brothers the better - these Motor City legends can do no wrong. Be assured that on "N2 The EnFinate" it is tough rolling acid techno that's emotive as much as it is full of dancefloor attitude. For something more funky and with direct impact on the dancers, "Rock My Soul" (Reborn mix) is a groove oriented DJ tool with some seriously syncopated rhythm action reaching near tribal moments.
Review: Over the years, Random Noise Generation was always Octave One's more electronic sounding project and on their latest release, this still proves to be the case. "N2 The Enfinate" sees the Burden brothers lay down a repetitive electronic riff over a snaking, pulsating rhythm. It's pared back and linear, but still contains enough of the Detroit act's soulful sensibility to set it apart. On "Rock My Soul (Reborn Mix)", they take a a look back to the early 90s, with soulful but slightly melancholic vocals supported by a stab-heavy house groove. Both tracks bode well for the Detroit act's forthcoming artist album, Endustry.
Review: Following on from last year's Innerchild release, Random Alias returns to Breakfast On Mars with a killer electro EP. The title track is a fast-paced affair, with a wiry rhythm and gnarly bass underpinning dystopian synths and acid-soaked bleeps. Despite these dark elements, the track's various elements make for a real party-oriented tune. On "Nufunk", the Berlin producer goes for a leaner approach, with lithe beats support a gurgling acid line and atmospheric pads, while "Nightdrive" leans more towards techno, as a growling bass and firing percussion underpin a stripped back groove. Rounding off this release is an introspective, downtempo take on the title track from Hague veteran DJ Overdose.
Review: Classic heritage label Rubiks enjoys a timely rewind from Fokuz as some of its many starlit soul shakers get dusted off to remind us how timeless and classy so much of the label's output was. Instantly charming from the moment Lenzman's remix of Calculon & Dave Owen's "Ben Carlos" shimmies its way into the mix. Other highlights include the timeless space funk and gully bounce of Random Movement's "Your Dancing Feat", the woozy spellbinding jazz of Mutt & Calculon's "Easy On The Motion" and Phil Tangent's evocative space age soul joint "Giving Up The Ghost". Bring on the second volume...
Random Movement & Dan Marshall - "Current Situation" - (6:16) 174 BPM
Silence Groove - "Strike It On" - (6:26) 174 BPM
Review: The second of two samplers ahead of their multi-artist, myriad-shade album Drum & Bass Poetry, Santorin unite two longstanding bass masters west coast beardy man Random Movement and Cardiff chaos stirrer Dan Marshall. "Current Situation" oozes liquid soul with its sprinkled keys and woozy horns but there's a much darker underbelly rolling beneath. "Strike It On", meanwhile, sees Polish murker Silence Groove go all early Brookes Brothers with a rolling bass affair adorned with a yearning soulful vocal. Poetry in motion.
