Review: Turning in a fresh slice of funk for the 2020-21 turn over period is Riva Star in collaboration with London-based singer Gavin Holligan. With Riva Starr adding a small cut up technique to the bebop skat style hats of Holligan's jazz style, flashed of strings dance with filtered house synths and a skipping groove in the disco entwined "Scat Dub". Moving on, a set of percussion pieces give a tropical vibe to the beefy drums and rollicking country, soul and western dance tip of "If I Could Only Be Sure (club mix)" - think Django Unchained deep in the club. Review: Since his first productions, which surfaced in 2007, Italy's Riva Starr (otherwise known under his Christian name of Stefano Miele) has climbed up the success ladder thanks to a collection of commercially successful EPs for the likes of Claude Von Stroke's Dirtybird, 100% Pure and Southern Fried Records. It was only a matter of time before he's pop up on Jamie Jones' Hot Creations label, an outlet reserved strictly for the more club-minded house productions out there. His debut for the label comes in the form of a three-tracker: first we have his own original mix of "Fallin' On You", a driving deep house belter surrounded by low toms and expertly placed vocals, and the techno servings come from Starr's compatriot Davide Squillace who drops a dash of LFO and some nastier percussion to the framework. Last but not least, legend DJ Pierre remixes "Acid Train" into a pulsating drum machine flex with bubbling 303 sequences and seductive vocal shots. Bang!

Review: On his latest EP for the prolific Heattraxx imprint, Chicago scene stalwart K-Alexi Shelby pays tribute to one of the Windy City's foundational house DJs, the late, great Music Box resident Ron Hardy. In its original mix form 'The Ron Hardy Memo' wraps hard-worked, cut-up disco samples and vocal snippets around a tough, low-slung, 4am-ready, filter-sporting deep house groove. It's a devastatingly simple idea, expertly executed for maximum dancefloor pressure. San Francisco sort Riva Starr remixes, beefing it up further to create one of the most energetic, rolling and sweat-soaked disco-house cuts of 2024 so far.

Review: The fifth instalment of this series is a reminder of the impact that KMS had on dance music . Right across the spectrum, Kevin Saunderson's releases shaped the future. A case in point is Esser'ay's "Forces", one of the KMS owner's many pseudonyms. The track's use of rumbling sub-bass and booming vocals proved influential in both garage and drum'n'bass - and it still sounds fresh. Part 5 features other similar landmark tracks. "Just Want Another Chance", a Saunderson project as Reese, retains its eerie, otherworldly sensibility despite the passage of over three decades. However, it's not all about looking to the past. The evergreen "Rock to the Beat" is remodelled here by Smith & Selway, setting it in a brooding, pulsating direction.
