Review: It's pretty clear from the get go that 80's Child is all about going back to the future. As the door of his Delorean opens upwards and the billowing smoke clears, we see that he has brought back four 80s dancefloor wonders which he sensitively retweaks with contemporary flair. "Keep On Lovin Me" is that kind of lazy electro-boogie jam that's all about that crisp snare drop, "Tryin' To Get Over" is more your upbeat brassy funk number, "Serious" is Donna Allen's 1986 snarling New Jack beast of a tune and "Plane Love" end things with a soul-meets-Latino funkout. Hot stuff!

Review: Hot on the heels of his well received Night Vision EP on Yam Who's Midnight Riot label, electrofunk-obsessed edits fiend Danny Worrall returns to Ruben & Ra's Retrospective imprint with the second installment of his Back To The 80s series. Those familiar with his particular blend of '80s nostalgia should know what to expect, namely tweaked but fairly faithful reworks of well-known cuts and underground classics. As usual, there's plenty of solid dancefloor material on show, from the teasing build-ups, rousing horns and jumpy synths of "Don't Let Go" and stretched-out '80s soul fun of "Baby Love", to the singalong disco rush of "Wear It Out".

Review: With dubstep being back into such a strong and stable position within the full expansive range of underground dance music, labels like Locus Sound, who has kept the consistency levels so high of late, most certainly need to be praised. This latest four tracker from E S P & Meddem is a perfect example of this consistency as we kick off with slightly trippy arrangement of the title track 'Retrospect', kicking us off with a bit of an unorthodox bang. The eerie flavours continue next as the emptive strings and swampy sub warbles of E S P's 'Keep Searching' drift into earshot, followed by Meddem's 'Softwax', a minimal yet powerful original, focussing on abstract percussive pushes and serious subweight. Finally, 'Stars combines more interesting rhythmic switch ups and an acidic synthesizer pulse throughout to put an aquatic feel into this fizzing finale.

Review: Given the title, you'd expect Ajello's latest to feature a prominent kalimba melody. Unsurprisingly, it does, alongside some African-inspired percussion and some seriously squelchy bottom-end in their typical dirty nu-disco style. The result is a track that isn't needlessly deep or overtly banging, instead playing its strengths by delivering the best of both words. Even better is Hardway Brothers' decidedly cosmic remix, which adds some voodoo magic and more than a little acid tweakery. Elsewhere, Verdo's darting remix is pleasingly Balearic in its wide-eyed approach, while Retrospective label bosses Ruben & Ra turn bonus track "Saturday Morning" into a rush inducing chunk of deep electrofunk.

Review: Over the last 14 years, UK techno-funk stalwart Colin McBean has released a vast amount of music under his Mr G alias, for a wide variety of labels; according to Discogs, he's dropped an astonishing 70 12" singles in that time. This two-disc collection of his favourite moments, simply titled Retrospective, is arguably much needed. For the newcomers it offers a neat summary of his particular brand of no-nonsense, sample-heavy techno, where cut-up jazz, disco and soul loops ride thunderous techno rhythms and robust, late night grooves. For the diehards, there's a smattering of new cuts, while occasional fans should revel in the opportunity to savour some of his most hard-to-get jams.

Review: V Recordings: A genus source for drum and bass, the launch pad of so many great careers it's not worth counting and still a consistent source of forward-thinking beats. If any label can justify five volumes of back-cat badness, it's Bryan Gee's. Going right back to 1993 (Roni Size's "Timestretch"), we whistle, rattle and roll past some of the label's (and scene in general's) titans. Dillinja is repped hard with an array of discography highlights such as the shattered amen attack plan ("Bad Man"), Krust is paid in full with cuts such as the minimal muscle roller "Set Speed", jungle godfather Sappo reminds us of real old school with "Into The Light" while Future Cut's later-era "Prophecy" is rewound to great effect. And that's just five of the album's 21 chapters. A must read document for junglists old and young.

Review: Greg Vickers aka Afternoons In Stereo is a master at the art of electronica and all things downtempo. Over the years, the majority of his output has come out through the Timewarp label, to which he returns to at present with Retrospective, a collection of his own favourite productions from the last ten years. In there, you'll find his inimitable take on IDM and electro, most vividly represented by classics such as "El Puma", "Metrosexual", or the utterly memorable "Tinto Brass", a favourite around these parts.
