Review: If any label is going to wrap up one of grime's biggest years to date, it's Butterz. Responsible for the genre's best parties and home to artists from Swindle to Faze Miyake to Terror Danjah, Butterz are one of the most consistent and creative grime flagbearers of the game. Reading like a who's who in grime (Big Narstie, Skepta, Flowdan, Stormzy, Wiley, D Double E, Sir Spyro, Plastician, Kano, Giggs and loads more) each of the 40 tracks remind us (if we needed reminding) just how well grime has annotated and soundtracked the year. Review: Although famous for straight-up house productions, Joey Negro's Z Records has spent the last few years cosying up to the nu-disco crowd. Here, many of the label's most disco-centric releases get a new lease of life, on a collection that gleefully joins the dots between nu-disco, disco-flecked house, boogie and electrofunk revivalism. There's another chance to check the Revenge's excellent edit of Chapter 3's "Smurf Trek", remixes from Faze Action, Tornado Wallace and The Idjut Boys, a smattering of classic re-edits from Onur Engin and Red Greg, and plenty of original material from Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee under a multitude of aliases. Oh, and a sparkling 60-minute bonus DJ mix from Faze Action.
Review: 2019 marks a decade since the Needwant label first sprung into life. Those ten years have been action packed to say the least, as this epic anniversary compilation proves. What's on offer is a mixture of label highlights from Needwant's bulging back catalogue, a handful of previously unheard tracks and the odd exclusive remix. There's much to admire throughout, from the spacey deep house goodness of Kim Ann Foxman's "Return It" and the delay-laden late night retro-futurism of Tuff City Kids' acid-fired rework of VIMES' "Minds", to the throbbing, Italo-influenced brilliance of Res Mo's "Train To Kyoto", Octa Octa's atmospheric early morning tweak of Few Nolder's "Porcelain" and the Revenge's slo-mo, glassy eyed cover of SOS Band classic "Just Be Good To Me".
