Review: Italian duo Tiger & Woods return with four very solid house and disco jams on their own T&W label. 'Fake U' is a loopy, tracky affair, with an insistent piano riff front and centre and a bassline that gets seriously whompy in places, 'Do It Do Me' is a more uptempo affair with spacey synths and will give the floor an energy injection for sure, while 'Silly Little Games' heads in the opposite direction, coming on like a love letter to early 80s boogie and Italo. The real attention-getter though is 'Wild Stream', presumably so titled because of its obvious debt to the 'wild pitch' house style of the mid-90s.
Review: After nigh on three years apart, during which time they concentrated on their numerous solo projects, Italian twosome Tiger & Woods are back with a brand-new EP. In truth, nobody does loop-powered, synth-sporting, boogie-sampling house better, so it's little surprise to see little variation from their usual blueprint. That's not a criticism, though, because all four tracks are fantastic. Choose between the throbbing, subtly acid-flecked pump of 'Sue Me', the classic T&W boogie-house build of 'Licence to Vibe' (featuring vocalist Em, who provides some great hooks), the 'Gin Nation'-meets-piano house roll of 'Chicken Bone', and the viciously cut-up, synth-heavy hedonism of '16 Red'.
Review: Ruby Wood hails from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, studied jazz at Leeds Conservatoire and is best known as the vocalist for Submotion Orchestra. She does also work as a solo artist, though, as this new five-track EP for London-based hip-hop, soul and jazz label First Word ably demonstrates. Mellow neo-soul/R&B with hints of both jazz and hip-hop is the order of the day generally, with Ms Wood's mellifluous vox obviously front and centre - though she's not afraid to share the stage with others, namely fellow Leeds vocalist Isaac Malibu, who guests on 'Mr Unavailable', and her own baby daughter Amber, whose coos and gurgles grace 'Me And My Girl'.
Review: When we look back at the past few years, it's impossible to pick out one tune from the Woodsman which is anything other than brilliant. from 'Advanced' and 'Monotone' to more recent 'Champagne Dream'. The latest High Contrast sleeve with his name across the top is due to a wicked new remix of last years 'Inside Me' from Tiesto favourite Bassjackers. Who sympathetically inject a little more attitude and grit than the Original, with the standout male vocal still intact.. This is big!!
