Review: Joey Negro's Soul Of Disco series has always been a great source of forgotten disco gems for those who like their dance music rich, stringy and soulful. This third two-disc selection from the Z Records boss is no different. For disco diggers, there's plenty to enjoy, be it the rich, horn-drenched instrumental grooves of Board Of Directors' "Hanging Tough", the raw, clavinet groove of Loi's "Body Contact" or the wobbly synth bass and perfect percussion of Phenomenal's "One Two Three". With a smattering of bonus re-edits from Joey Negro himself for those who like their grooves a bit more DJ-friendly, The Soul Of Disco 3 is nigh on essential.

Review: As the title suggests, this fantastic - and let's face it, pleasingly epic - compilation showcases some of the many disco-centric cuts in the Z Records vaults, throwing in a few exclusives (see Dave Lee's fantastic, hybrid disco-boogie rework of Firefly's 'Love is Gonna Be on Your Side') for good measure. Such is the high-quality threshold that picking stand outs is tough, but our picks of a very strong bunch include the slick, boogie-funk brilliance of Crackazat's 'Sensationalized', Larry Levan's vintage, delay-heavy synth dub of Johnny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love', the stomping disco-house release of 'Gotta Thing (2021 Remaster)' by Foreal People, Taana Gardner and Dave Lee, and John Morales' epic rework of Sean McCabe's 'Love For Life'. As the old saying goes, this is all killer and no filler.

Review: When Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart sets his sights on creating an authentic tribute to a vintage style, the results are invariably excellent. That's certainly the case with this debut album from his Violaa project, which utilizes a swathe of live players - and vocalists of African and Caribbean origin - to successfuly replicate the hot and sticky sounds of Afro-disco and tropical disco. Most will already know the brilliant single "Spies Are Watching Me", but there are plenty of other standout cuts throughout On Te L'avait Dit. Check, for starters, the Trinidadian disco hustle of "Vampire", the William Onyeabor-goes-disco flex of "Tomowa", and the lilting Afro-funk brilliance of "Jungle Fire".

Review: After the success of the original Southside EP last year, Bok Bok has called upon his mates to rework some of the lead cuts with results that stretch across the board. Sir Spyro has some filthy bass at the forefront of his playful reworking of "Silo Pass", while the horns get teased in the appropriate places to great effect. Vjuan Allure instead focuses on dry beats working around a UK Funky template, with only scattered effects left to fill in the gaps. Bok Bok's own remix of "Charisma Theme" piles the tension on high with dread strings and a snappy dispersal of percussion. L-Vis 1990 gets jacking with his take on "Reminder", leaving it to Helix to delve into a funky techno rut to conquer "Look".

Review: Kerri Chandler's first album of original productions since 2008 is an epic in every sense of the word: a vast, 24-track excursion recorded on location in a multitude of clubs around the world, with each track inspired by, and specifically designed to sound best inside, each of the selected venues. It's basically a love letter to some of his favourite clubs, created with guest vocalists and musicians, and is little less than a deep house masterpiece. There are far too many highlights to mention, but our current favourites include the bassbin-rattling bump of 'Subbie (Jackpot Mix) [Sub Club]', the heart-aching soulful house brilliance of 'Back To Earth [Knockdown Center]', the sax-sporting funkiness of 'The Morning Heat [La Grange]', the sunrise-ready beauty of 'Who Knows [Barbarellas]' and the Berlin-friendly deep house hypnotism of 'Sunrise [Watergate]'.

Review: Despite Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart boasting a discography packed to the rafters with successful forays into all sorts of vintage dancefloor styles, many were still surprised at the brilliance of the first Voilaaa album, On Te L'avait Dit. This follow-up is equally as impressive, and features 13 more trips into classic Afro-disco and tropical disco territory. With Clavinets, punchy horns, live percussion and Afrobeat bass to the fore, Hovart and his many collaborators - including a number of French vocalists with African heritage - variously pay tribute to all sorts of late '70s and early '80s dancefloor fusion sounds. The album includes tons of club-ready excursions, including the righteous "Problems", disco-tastic "Kemtane" and sweaty, high octane "Mbele".

Review: It's been a very exciting time for Sir Hiss of late, who has been pushing forward in leaps and bounds, establishing himself as one of the front runners in Bristol's already heavily populated 140 scene. This link up with White Peach confirms that further as the lo-fi warmth of 'Sunset in Hong Kong' kicks the project off in blazing form. Next we dip into more sumptuous and spooky sounds of 'Haunter' in a high powered pairing with Lemzly Dale. The final track we hear on this release comes in the form of another collaboration as Emz gets busy over the 'Sunset In Hong Kong' instrumental, providing laid back flows and wavy lyricism on 'Rolling'.

Review: Manchester label Hydrated Audio hook up with Akimbo to bring in a cross pollination of artists across eight diabolical numbers. Get some new-school pop vocals and electro chiptune out of Error's "Closer" next to some middle eastern percussion and dipping synths in BIG SIRS Arabian Nights. Jackhammer distortion in FRAXION's "On My Back" hits the spot, while KLIMATE's "Winner" introduces some ragga-jungle vibes in tandem with the liquid rhythms, tear out bass sequences and deep textures of B-Plexx's "Death Wish". Stand out bass drops on this compilation come from Begone's "Favour" (tip) alongside the more urban flavours of Sanity's "Dissociation" and a flurry of explosive sound in GEO's "Ominious".

Review: Finland's Top Billin fulfill their New Year resolutions by releasing their now traditional two January compilations. Hot on the heels of their 'Best Of 2012' collection, label co-founder Sir Nenis presents this assortment of bangers that didn't manage to fit on to any particular release last year. The quality's still right up there though, and highlights include the Chicago-ish stomp of "Cherry Lotion" by Fisky, haunted hip-house booty track "Ghetto Starr" by Top Billin and DJ Venum, the Inner City on downers vibe of "Yo" by Harkan and the melancholic retro rave of "Feel Good" by Fobator.

Review: More from Kerri Chandler's forthcoming Spaces & Places album, which sees the legendary U.S house producer record tracks inside - and in tribute to - some of the world's most renowned club spaces. Like its predecessors, this third sampler is an expansive and action-packed affair. Chandler first pays tribute to Ibizan superclub DC10 on the deep acid house wiggle of 'Feeling Red', before channelling the spirit of Sir Henry's on the intergalactic bounce of 'Keep One (But Do It Again)'. His tribute to Croatian open-air club Barbarella's, 'Who Knows' (featuring Dora Dora) is a breezy, sunrise delight, while 'Industria' is a locked-in big room roller and Club Qu tribute 'The Calling' is a glistening, life-affirming Afro-house delight. Top notch tackle from Chandler all told.

Review: By his previously prolific standards, Sebastien Doring AKA Lovebirds has been rather quiet of late. In fact, this EP marks his first release since last year's notable Record Store Day collaboration with Galliano on Razor 'N' Tape. Predictably, it's something of a good 'un - a surprise deep house cover (or at least that's what it sounds like) of Tullio de Piscopo's Balearic classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)". Doring serves up two mixes - the dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chug of the "Original Deep Mix" and the slightly livelier, more synthesizer-heavy "Original Vinyl Version" - while Sirs and Raiders of the Lost Arp handle remix duties. The latter's mix, rich in glistening but urgent guitar riffs and jazzy Rhodes solos, is easily the pick of the pair, though Sirs more Italo-centric take is pretty darn tasty, too.

Review: Danish chill out legend Kenneth Bager turns in a ninth Sunset Session on his most esteemed Music For Dreams imprint. In the game for some 20 years now, Bager's compilations are something to be trusted and highlights this time come from Lucci Capri's down and dirty "Boom Boom Clap" and the syncopated rhythms of SIRS remix to Bongo Entp. Soulful touches of jazz make it into the deep house affairs of Pepe Link's "Gypsy Love Affair" and amid the bassline mechanics of "Man With The Red Face". But let's not forget the man Kenneth Bager himself, who chips on with an ambient edit to Laudness' "Atlantish" - think 80s soundtrack music - next to the handpan drumming, balearic vocals, electronic drum programming and spanish guitar of "Avisa A (feat DJ DIVO & OliO)". Ole!

Review: Midnight Riot bring us a 20-track compilation that certainly can't be faulted on the eclecticism front, with tracks ranging from the boogie nouveau of Ilija Rudman's 'Let This Dream Be Real' to Sirs' fairly self-explanatory 'Turkish Folk', and from the sumptuous soul of Jack Tyson Charles' 'Glory' to BJ Smith's acoustic psych-pop cover of Soul II Soul's 'Keep On Movin''. The southern bar room funk of HP Edits's 'Why Don't You Slide', the smokey soundtrack jazz vibes of Peter Simmons' 'Downtown' and Phoenix's 'Sueno Latino'-ish 'Nature Dance' are three more highlights of a varied and enjoyable collection.

Review: In 2010 London/Kent based label come agency come promoter Digital 6 started from the bottom, fast forward 7 years and they have built a solid following and are well respected by peers, critics and most importantly fans of music. This mammoth album show cases the 'Best Of' the imprint with a massive 36 tacks. Ranging from the gloriously sun-kissed, ragga jungle tips 'Let's Go This On' and 'Stay Strong VIP' to the hard hitting hip hop dipped 'In The Hood' and 'Gotcha Back'. The album also comes with some interesting remixes like the dark and brooding jungle remix of '50,000 Watts and the beautifully sinister remix of Portishead's 'Humming Darkside'. If you're into eclectic, well-crafted quality drum and bass, this album is well worth the long listen.

Review: Not content with serving up regular doses of ear-pleasing nu-disco, the Future Disco crew has decided to start sound-tracking days spent lounging on the beach. Somewhat predictably, this second Beach Life selection is packed with seriously steamy, sun-kissed grooves. While this epic digital package does contain two (un-credited) DJ mixes, the real joy is the expansive - not to mention eclectic - selection of DJ-friendly, unmixed tracks. Check, for example, the sun-down, jazz-funk influenced bliss of Folamour's "L'homme Loup", the head-nodding lounge warmth of Snacks' "Daydream", the gentle Balearic nu-disco of Sirs, the lo-fi deep house haziness of DJ Boring and COEO, and the sand-in-the-shoes shuffle of Eli Escobar's delicious remix of Kraak and Smaak's "U R Freak". Throw in a swathe of tasty, laidback but floor-friendly deep house jams and you have a solid collection of serious summer jams.
