Review: Wildcard techno doesn't come spicier than this. Russia's Buttechno is a prolific operator with seemingly endless ideas about how to subvert the formulaic trappings of 4/4 dance music without losing a fundamental functionality at the heart of the matter. This, his fifth album, lands on trip in a tangled mess of unpolished jams, fractious grooves and the kind of unbridled creativity that marks out a truly great artist. There's a punky quality to both the musical ideas and the beyond-the-grave voice that peppers many of the tracks, and it makes for a truly thrilling techno long player that moves according to its own rules. All hail Buttechno, doing it his own way and sounding utterly untouchable in the process.
