Review: When executed with spine-tingling precision, there are very tunes that don't benefit from a good dose of strings and pianos. Throw in a beautiful soul-stirring vocal and you have yourself a universal smasher that will make grown men cry, dogs hug cats and, in rare cases, politicians not be corrupt. "Alive" ticks all of those boxes. File for those smoochy sessions towards the end of the night and win over every couple on the dancefloor. For added beef UKG ledge Sticky makes a rare appearance and flexes his triplet skills while Dismantle rips the soul out of the record and re-installs it with pure filth. Something for everyone.

I Can't Stay (edit) - (3:24) 128 BPM
Review: The thing we love about the Local Action imprint is that they genuinely keep us guessing every single time with where their next release is going to take us. This time around, they pull together a monumental collaboration as the ages of UKG collide in style. DJ Q & Hans Glader, two of the most talked about names across different eras of garage music, are joined by the unmistakable vocal marvels of Shola Ama for this wavy singalong entitled 'I Can't Stay'. There is something so appealing about this one's combination of organic sounding percussion and ethereal pad textures, in between which Shola's magnificent vocal sits perfectly. It's a summer singalong for sure!

Amae (Sasha Fabric2099 mix) - (9:32) 124 BPM
Review: American producer Reed Kackley aka Baile is up next on Sasha's Last Night On Earth label. The original version of "Amae" is a pop-inflected, mellow and sensual listening experience for those chill-out moments led by Felicia Douglass' gorgeous vocal performance. It receives two remixes by label chief Sasha: the first "Sasha Fabric1999 mix" was used on his recent Fabric mix and indeed - like its name suggests - channels the vibe of pre-millennium tension. The "Sasha Fabric2099" mix is more typical of Christopher Coe ,on this absolutely evocative progressive house anthem engineered by one of the true masters of the style.

Broken (remixed)
Broken (Urulu dub) - (5:51) 123 BPM Hot
Broken (Steve Huerta remix) - (6:57) 123 BPM
Review: When it was released in early January, we waxed lyrical about Cassio Kohl's debut EP, Broken, praising its blend of jazz-flecked deep house, broken groove and garage revivalism. Here, Los Angeles natives Urulu and Steve Huerta offer up two brand new reworks of the EP's title track. Urulu's Dub is probably our pick, featuring as it does thunderous bottom end, murky, Detroit-influenced chords and neat use of the original's standout vocal sample. Huerta's version is more musically minded, layering up a chunky US house groove with some ear-pleasing chords and synth melodies. With the vocal once again taking centre stage, it's an unfussy, humid delight.

Review: The enigmatic Amadeus label present a tight little remix EP from a number of new mystery figures and a few known names in the deep house game. With a real melting pot of talent in here, it doesn't get much better than this - deranged 4/4 deviations and seductive electronic landscapes make up the entirety of the release but be sure to check Broke One's remix of "In My Life" by Urulu and the Youandewan version of "Being" by Savile.

Review: Label-hopping deep house head Urulu (real name Taylor Freels) has come a long way since he made his debut on Amadeus back in 2012. Here he returns to the label for the first time since, bringing with him a quartet of sumptuous, saucer-eyed treats. Freels sets the tone via the soft focus loveliness of ambient-goes-broken beat gem "Limp Lover (Intro)", before diving further into hybrid IDM/dream house pastures on the chiming and sunset-friendly "The Nautilus". His rarely seen electro influences come to the fore on the deep space shuffle of acid-flecked dancefloor soundscape "Armadillo", while "Cold Ravioli" sees him wrap dreamy piano flourishes and rich deep house textures around a snappy breakbeat house groove.

Review: It's always good to see the DJQ train continuing to run, being one of the true pioneers of bass music in this country. He has once again landed on Local Action for a vibrant collection, this time seeing the past become remade with 'Est. 2003 Remixed'. We are greeted by a host of wonderful garage names, from Todd Edwards & Flava D to Al Wooton & Baltra, giving us a full spectrum of new school garage ideas with a tasty dash of old school to match. The project is an undeniable success in celebrating the endless career of DJQ, with our out and out highlights including the awesome Soul Mass Transit System rework of 'I Couldn't See', originally from DJQ & Wolfie, alongside Jeremy Sylvester's tidy relick of Speedy G's, originally featuring Finn. Awesome work!

Review: It's been a hot minute since we last saw a full length DJ Q project, who returns in style here for this vibrant new 11 track collection entitled 'Est. 2003'. Featuring a host of fabulous guests including Hans Glader, Todd Edwards, Finn, Shola Ama, Sharda, Lily Mckenzie & Star. One, this project is a fantastic showcasing of UKG in 2022, combining the sounds of the old and new into a fabulous collection. Despite the majesty of the collaborations involved, DJ Q impresses even more so on his solo additions, with the quirky vocal twitches of 'It's You' giving us a unique flavour, next to the super emotional harmonies of 'Close Your Eyes', the nostalgia-inducing drum bounces of 'I Couldn't See' and the unforgettable vocal overlays of 'All That I Could'. It's a pretty monumental collection, that even with it being a garage project, we would recommend taking it in via long play format!

Review: Having earned his corn in the back office of Rush Hour's Amsterdam HQ, Olf Van Elden is now making his mark as a producer. Previously, he's released fizzing, far-sighted techno and house on Voyage Direct and Tape Records Amsterdam. Here, he delivers his most expansive - and arguably strongest - 12" to date for former employers Rush Hour. There's much to admire, from the pulsing analogue motifs and clanking drum machine percussion of "Cable 54" and semi-ambient gorgeousness of "Poly Evolver #1", to the thumping, industrial-influenced modular throb of "Poly Evolver #2". Arguably best of all, though, are his two hook-ups with Jeroen. Choose between the flitting electronic melodies, snappy beats and dreamy chords of "Prototype", and the drowsy, EBM-goes-Detroit brilliance of "Ama Driver".

Review: What a thunderous collection we have on our hands here as the Durkle Disco crew emerge with a potent selection of remixes, unleashing a new lease of life to their extremely varied catalogue. The first thing that has to be said is just how many different direction this project is able to go in, from the dissonant synthetic drifts of Dusty Ohms on remix duty for Central Spillz' 'Deep End', to the pulsating tribal drum work of East Man's 'Bushmaster' overhaul from Fonzo & Riko Dan, then back to KOROstyle's potent 'On Sight' original with Emz & Jay0117, which receives a warbling recreation from Hayz & Nothingnice. This is Durkle Disco down to a T, powerful vocals, original sounding instrumentals, with our favourites including KRSLD's dizzying refix of 'Bad' from Logan & Kouslin, Jook's explosive overhaul of 'Bushmaster' and Dutchie's super smooth rethink of Ngaio's 'Green Eyed Queen'. Lovely stuff!

Review: For those who are not familiar with them, TLC Fam are a crew from the township of Newlands West formed by 23 members. It was established in 2011, then as a dance group in 2014 when they found distribution. Their sound represents a strong, powerful Zulu culture from the beats, to the lyrics of the songs to the song titles as well. The main producers are Resto and Dj Magic, who created a very unique and original style of gqom. The strength of TLC is being a real family where everybody helps one another. TLC Fam gqom is loud and powerful. It can break your speakers; which is why they play this out to packed dancefloors, until the early morning. Moreover, they are the originators of the 'Taxi Kick' style of Gqom, which has a very particular and distorted/multi layered bass drum, made with some specific techniques on Fruity Loops.

Abua - (5:19) 127 BPM Hot
Antidote - (6:19) 127 BPM
Review: This quietly impressive EP from Major Notes offers four distinct takes on future garage and UK Funky. Opener "Ama", for example, rides a wave of voodoo murkiness and tropical-infused rhythms before introducing a few rays of light later on. "Albino", meanwhile, goes for a similar voodoo feel, but adds odd, chopped-up vocals and marimba melodies for a slightly airier experience. "Abua" sounds like a booming, tropical take on Basement Jaxx's "Fly Life" (it isn't, incidentally), while closer "Antidote" is unflinchingly sweet and sugary - a genuinely happy finish to an otherwise intoxicatingly murky EP. Impressive.
