Review: Drum&Bass Arena: The longest-standing, and one of the most respected, platforms for all things jungle D&B celebrates an impressive 20 years in the game with this ridiculously hefty document that pays respect to the genre's every twist and turn. From scene-shattering megahits ("Tarantula", "Feel The Love", "Rock It", "Afterglow") to unarguable historical underground scene-smashing megabangers ("Machete", "Aztec", "Nasty Ways", "The View", "Champion Sound", "Turbulence", "Up All Night", "Deadline", Ram Trilogy's remix of "Pacman") by way of tracks that may have slipped under the radar ("Defcom 69", "What's Wrong", "Song For Lovers") the whole album is loaded to the lips with some of the most important records the genre's enjoyed in the last 20 years. Time to get nostalgic, time to fill those holes in your collection, time to educate your dancefloor. Here's to another 20 years!
Review: Massiveness... Jungle Cakes' Welcome To The Jungle collection continues with one of the hardest working and consistent beatsmiths in the game - DJ Hybrid. Following massive selections from the likes of Benny Page, Dub Pistols and Born On Road (to name but a few) the Deep In The Jungle/Audio Addict bossman picks up where he and Dope Ammo left us in 2020 with his last Welcome To The Jungle appearance. This time he's boosted things even more with a staggering 62 tracks that covers the entire spectrum from an almighty rollcall of talents ranging from Voltage and Nicky Blackmarket to Napes to Serum, Jam Thieves, Conrad Subs, Bladerunner and so many more. This an absolutely incredible collection and selection from Hybrid and the Jungle Cakes crew. Essential.
Review: Pow! DJ Hybrid digs through the Deep In The Jungle vaults for this crucial collection of jams and vibes for this ultimate VA release that flexes the full range of the label and represents a how exciting drum & bass and jungle are right now. The whole LP is one massive highlight but it's great to reload cuts like [IVY]'s four-to-the-floor bounces on 'Moving', the cut throat amen slaps and chops on Toby Ross and Oram's 'Wide Roach', get swept away in the emotion of Flat T's 'Women's Work' and get KO'd by Lupo and DJ Hybrid's still-crucial 'Soundboy'. Serious collection for anyone looking to juice up their jungle playlists.
Review: As you'd expect, given the label's runaway success over the past few years, there are plenty of very familiar cuts on this 52-track 'best of' from the all-conquering Toolroom, including GotSome's tribal smash 'Nomad Chat', label boss Mark Knight's infuriatingly catchy, flute-driven Shovell collab 'Selecao', Mendo's sample-heavy G-houser 'Mooving' and CamelPhat's remix of Fatboy Slim. But there are plenty of less heavily rinsed gems on offer too, and with tracks from the likes of D.Ramirez, Leftwing & Kody, Dosem, DJ S.K.T and Dale Howard plus reworks of Sterling Void and Todd Terry classics, it's a no-brainer for tech-house jocks on a budget.
