Review: A veteran of the balearic scene, Steve Miller brought his Afterlife project to life in 1995 with a self-titled debut album. He is is back on his very own Subatomic label here with the deep sundown groove of "Rising Up", then things get slo-mo (and low slung) on the smooth heater "Casual Bungalow", while the rather evocative "Medicine Man" will mesmerise you with its celestial atmospherics. Plus, there's one more glimpse of the sunset, pina colada in hand, on the emotional closer "Way Out West".

The result is the deeply hypnotic tribal house of "Mahalo" which will entrance you from the first beat. Also included is the nu-disco journey "Sundrops" awash in a rich tapestry of sublime melodies, as well as the dramatic atmosphere of "Liberty Cap" underpinned by chilled, swing-infused beats, and closing it out with the poolside bliss of "Morning Dub" - the perfect sound of balearica served best before sunset.

Review: Under the Afterlife alias, Steve Miller (no, not that Steve Miller) has been making sun-kissed downtempo grooves and Balearic beats longer than many Juno Download customers have been alive. 2020 remarkably marks 25 years since his debut single hit stores, so Miller has decided to celebrate by offering up a new summer-themed EP. As you'd expect, there's much for weary minds and bodies to savour throughout, from the tactile, Italian dream house style soft-focus grooves and twinkling pianos of opener "Summer of Love", to the sax-laden ambient jazz bliss of "The Quiet" (featuring Tudor Moore), and the jaunty, kaleidoscopic dub-meets-electronica warmth of closing cut "Code Red".

Review: Long-time Ibiza resident Steve Miller has been making sparkling, White Isle-inspired music - especially languid chill-out and Balearic fare - since the mid 1990s, though his productivity has naturally cooled a little in recent years. There's much to admire on his second Afterlife EP of 2022, from the sustained synth-strings, electronic marimba melodies, ultra-dreamy chords and tactile digi-dub grooves of title track 'Mother Nature Land', to the slow-motion, sunrise-ready ambient dub brilliant of 'Ibango Dub', a collaboration with fellow Ibiza resident Ken Fan. Sandwiched in between you'll find a glistening, afternoon-ready deep house mix of 'Rising Up' courtesy of pal James Bright, and the immersive textures, bubbly TB-303 acid lines and organic beats of 'Unity Gain'.

Review: Rising Amsterdamer Colyn develops his unique sound with a second EP for Tale Of Us' Afterlife label. On the 'Patterns' EP, he incorporates the emotive vocals of his brother into a glassy-eyed and bittersweet composition as heard on the title track. There's no doubt that this one will charm listeners with its majestic qualities. This is followed by the adrenalised hypnotic techno epic "Merging Realities" awash in layers of sublime melodies, until final track "Exo" takes you deeper into the aether for one more serving of dancefloor drama.

Review: Fans of Tale of Us should be aware of the work of Mind Against, in part because the Berlin-based Italian brothers have previously collaborated with the Afterlife founders on a number of occasions. Here they pop up that label following years signed to Life & Death. What's on offer is predictably strong too, with title track 'Changes' seeing the productive brothers adding lilting, slowly shifting melodic textures, uplifting motifs and sparkling synth sounds to a tactile, tech-house groove. With a genuinely spine-tingling breakdown, it feels like a summer anthem in waiting. 'Closer' meanwhile is a little more musically intricate and undeniably emotive in tone, with twinkling pianos and eyes-closed vocalisations combining well with the duo's shuffling drums and sparkling electronics.

Review: Not restrained or bound by conventions, Innellea are the ascendant German duo on Tale Of Us' revered imprint. Their visions and impressions visibly transfer into their music, as heard on labels such as Underyourskin Records, Steyoyoke and TAU in recent times. Beginning with some rock crossover into melodic tech house on "Vigilans", followed by deep journeys into the aether as heard on "Rhytidome" or "Impurity" respectively which incorporate ethereal elements accompanied by seductive, slinky and hypnotic arrangements which are right in line with the Afterlife modus operandi.

Review: Given the length of his career - eleven years and counting - we should all know what to expect from Pete Dafeet by now. Here, the Lost My Dog co-owner pops up on Supremus, delivering four more rock-solid, club-friendly deep house treats. His famous chunky grooves are evident throughout, from the piano-laden sweetness of opener "Polar Bear", to the retro-futurist goodness of "Fear", via the late night percussion onslaught that is "Jungle Fever". House of Disco and Dirt Crew alumnus Harry Wolfman puts his spin on "Fear", expertly alternating between dreamy, Balearic style builds and bongo-heavy, organ-laden deep house grooves.
