Review: Level 2 and DJ Chap need no introduction. Right at the front of Sao Paulo's new wave of D&B talent, their Alibi project has been damaging dancefloors (and hogging our playlists) for several years now. Enough years, in fact, to hone their stripped back dark soul signature to an album level. And here it is... Said & Done is a powerful document that cements the duo's skills and position in the game. Ranging from the subtle piano laced opener "Debris" to solid sure fire stinkers like "Through The City" (with Serum & T.R.A.C) via sci fi junglised steppers like the gently fluctuating "Recycle", this Level 2 and DJ Chap at their most widescreen; leaping from delicate ("Grace" with vocalist OG Cleveland Watkiss) to deadly (the venomous creeper "Said & Done" with MC king DRS) this is a seriously on point debut album. Review: Level 2 and DJ Chap continue to demolish the dance with their currently-spotless Alibi project; "Trunk" is a conga-weaving roller with all the hallmark ingredients of a timeless classic heads-down roller; tight percussion, creeping basses and subtle bars from Coppa, everything about it is deep, dark and dangerous. "No Escape", featuring fellow Sao Paulo artist Nitri, is more of a late night fast lane stepper. Laced with techy textures but driven by a precision groove break and heaps of space, it's a smack back to the darker sounds of the early 2000s before everything went hyper. Extremely well played.

Review: Sealed with an X: Flexout Audio continue to celebrate 10 years of deep underground dynamics with label founder Bassi's curated X collection. Featuring cuts from all previous X instalments, plus the extras that all landed in the last few weeks, the 27-track strong set is a great snapshot of where both the label and underground drum & bass is at right now. If you're into that deep dark rumbling minimal futurist vibe then every track is a highlight but essentials include Visages immense 'Polarity Code', Sili's precision springer 'Gallop', the cosmic twisted synths of Wingz's 'Broken Path' and Wreckless's tense and sobering 'Don't Want To Forget How Your Voice Sounds'. X marks the spot.

Review: Burr Oak is one of the several artists in the Eatbrain orbit who make weird and wonderful sounds, appearing in multiple, ever-shifting forms. This time around its hard neuro and, in true Eatbrain form, these six tunes are abstract but not overly so, with a grounding in that D&B format we know so well. It's all about the sound design and the complexity here, and we especially love the pitched-up synth work on 'Dissent' and 'Barbarian'. It's 'No Light Will Shine On', however, which has really grabbed us and it's partly thanks to the insane drum work (that snare!) that ensconces a broader approach at nastiness, encapsulated by bass flourishes and sub wobbles. Top work.

Review: Sub-liminal are one of those very prolific, very underground labels that tends to go unnoticed yet releases some absolute bangers. So, getting a whole compilation full of them from a variety of up and coming producers is only going to go one way - hard. The first tune - 'Iggy' - from Garry K & RV is an instant stand out, a wobbling riff of force and hurting energy, all tied up in a jump-up sized package. 'Vultures' by Zapya and MC Karter is another top-level cut, a skippy drum-line and menacing vocals sit above a fiercely minimal roller that clicks and clanks with satisfying precision. There are a bunch more excellent tunes on this release, so go check them out.

Review: Halifax heavyweight Emperor finally unleashes the long-awaited beast that is his debut album and it's 50 shades of awesome. Rather than dish out a collection of the dark, tearing bangers he's become known for, he's licked up an all-armed hurricane of sounds and ideas; from the pixelated lift-off of "I Was" to the sweaty Upbeats drums of "Shapeshift" to the big breezy vocal drama of "Dispositions" and the rolling soul of "Thunder", this is a whole new creative level from Emperor as he plays by rules we've never heard him play by before. Review: L-Side's debut album came out some time ago now, and this is the long awaited remix EP, featuring some of the best artists in the game giving L-Side's tunes the once over. Break steps up and nails it as per usual, taking those perfect vocals and stretching them over a punishing bassline; thank god we're back in clubs soon, because this is going to kill it. Dogger & Mindstate work their lounging piano magic to great effect, and Spirit takes the essence of drum and bass and rolls it out with a monstrously stabbing bassline. Alibi close things on a head-nodding, subby note that will have you moving for sure. Sick.

Review: Thanks to releases from peeps like Kombinat100, Lula Circus, Konfetti Klub Ensemble, and Andre Crom, among others, the Acker imprint is quietly racking up enough catalogue credentials to compete with some of the big boys in the deep house circles. They've decided to switch things up a bit with this new album, deciding to go for a full-blown compilation, masterfully put together by their trusted Pophop. There's tunes from regular label attendees, all reworked from Pophop himself, who drops a gorgeous slice of Afro-rhythmic house in his edit of Il Civetto's "Liberte Ana" as an opener. His remix of "Helva Salva" from Timboletti is also an exquisite deep house bullet, beautifully put together with the help of some acoustic harmonies, but these are just to give you a taster. The man has a very particular remix and edit sound, and you'd be silly not to give this a go. Proper bang for your buck, right here!

Review: An enormous compilation here, which aims to bring together what's big in dubstep right now in an epic 40-track album which leans towards the heavier side of the spectrum. A modern musical phenomenon, dubstep has taken over the contemporary scene with violent force and South London Recordings give us their spin on it, bringing together tracks from some lesser-known talent who have a heavy, tech-y or synth-driven approach. The compilation kicks off with the enticing "Piano Roll" from Bipper, which juxtaposes piano melodies with tearing dubstep; then there is the guttural swagger of "Bad Thinks" by DJ Hydrator and the excellent Mefjus remix of "Granular Dopeness", plus numerous other noteworthy tracks. Well worth checking out.
