Review: Some genuinely impressive collaborative action here, as Berlin-based label hopper Amy Dabbs (whose previous releases have appeared on labels including Lobster Theremin and Shall Not Fade) joins forces with Toy Tonics twosome Athlete Whippet for the very first time. Opener 'Deep In Your Love' manages that tricky feat of being upbeat, grandiose and wonderfully loved-up, with Dabbs' vocal snippets peeping out above simmering strings, colourful electronic motifs, rubbery synth-bass and rolling house beats. 'Into You' is a dreamier and more spine-tingling affair that's as loved-up and groovy as they come, while closing cut 'Milkshake' is a colossal, hands-aloft piano house number that sounds like something that would have crossed over into the pop charts back in the mid 1990s.
Review: Nebel is the German word for 'nebula', astronomically speaking, or a mist or haze more generally - a fitting enough title for a track that, while quite driving in the beats department, still has something of a hazy, dreamy feel. The work of a Berlin-based Brit who's known for her releases on Lobster Theremin (and who's also the daughter of a well-known northern soul DJ), 'Nebel' is a cut that'd work on deep and progressive/melodic house floors alike, its densely layered synths underpinned by warm, resonant bass that powers everything along while chipmunk-y, almost PC Music-ish vocal microsnips add a dash of human warmth at the top end.
Review: Yam Who?, London's resident nu-disco heroes, are taking a step with the duo's Ism label looking to the far east and a whole new sound for their latest signing. This new addition to their roster being Jsquared aka the Tokyo-based artist John Enston and singer Honami 'Amy' Furuhara. "Dangerlove" is a smoothly produced slice classy...Europop in which Enston and Amy gently duet over a tropical beat that even touches on sunkissed RnB vibes. Remixes include the Autocycle version, which starts with a killer guitar riff and builds into dreamy arpeggiated disco and Yam Who?s own's piano house rework. Cool.
