Review: George Kelly's Athens-based Chopshop celebrate 15 years in the game with this best-of compilation that takes in cuts from the likes of Groove Armada (via Greg Wilson), Situation, Andy Bach, Bodie Lee, HP Vince and more, many of which - as is entirely in keeping with the label's name, of course - draw heavily on source material from the past. Dave Leatherman & Bruce Nolan kick us off with 'Sunny Side Up', which reworks Osibisa's 'Sunshine Day', and from there on out it's basically a non-stop disco/disco-house riot, with Bodie Lee paying tribute to Inner City on 'Let Me Take You Dancer', Wild Cherry chopped and looped to glorious effect by Delly on 'Movin' To The Groovin' and Alejandro Maria stealing the day with 'A Lot To Live For', which should really be called 'Stabs To Die For'.

Review: Dutch boogie masters Kraak & Smaak mark two whole decades in the game this year, and to celebrate the occasion, Jalapeno bring us this best-of selection culled from releases both on Jalapeno and on their own Boogie Angst imprint. Kraak & Smaak have always neatly walked the line between straight-up funk, disco and boogie on the one hand, and more pop-oriented productions on the other, and so it is here: the first half of the album is packed with 'new old' funk and soul gems like 'Danse Macabre' and 'I Don't Know', while the second half concentrates largely on the more commercial side of their oeuvre, not to mention their collaborations with a wide array of guest vocalists. Fans will have most of what's here already, of course, but it's a fitting tribute to an impressive career to date - long may it continue.

Review: Glitterbox resident Dr Packer is a leading light of the contemporary disco scene, while Dave Lee was arguably THE key architect of the whole post-house disco phenomenon in the first place. So when the former helms a compilation on the latter's label, you'd expect great things, and suffice to say you're very unlikely to be disappointed. Hell, for this writer the deep n' sultry JN Revival Mix of early 90s classic 'Do What You Feel' is worth the price of admission on its own, but with Packer's own remixes of label favourites making up over a third of the tracklist, the collection as a whole is pretty much unmissable.

Review: Well, when we saw this title land in the store we were as surprised as anyone to see that Four40 Records, one of the most active and exciting UK bass labels across the full breadth of 2020 has just turned 10 years old. This is a pretty outstanding achievement, for a label that is still at the forefront of it's sound to this very day. The compilation of course features some of the biggest releases from across the breadth of Four40's incredible catalogue of content, from the likes of Hybrid Theory, I Killed Kenny, Pavv, Limita and more, condensing ten years of musical progression into one extended tape. Review: With 30 tracks to choose, there's no faulting the value for money on offer with this latest Salsoul collection, but a note of caution should perhaps be sounded: if you've only just discovered Salsoul and are doing some exploring, then this isn't the best collection to start with, because most of the label's best-loved tunes already featured on Volume 1, back in 2017. That potential commercial weakness is also, however, the album's greatest strength, because it's the more obscure cuts that will be of most interest to long-term fans... and there are plenty of both! With a mixture of ACTUAL original mixes plus a few contemporary rerubs from the likes of Dave Lee and Danny Krivit, this is a worthwhile and rewarding addition to the ever-growing roster of Salsoul comps.

Review: Somewhat bizarrely, in 1978 Penthouse magazine funded the making of an album of particularly sexually charged disco tracks by the Love Symphony Orchestra, an all-star studio band helmed by producer/arranger Mitch Forber. The standout track was "Let Me Be Your Fantasy", a breathless, ten-minute disco climax that was as sweet as it was sleazy. Here it gets the remix treatment courtesy of Glitterbox regular and rework maestro Dr Packer. His version is a little looser and more carnival-ready than the 1978 original, with the track's familiar string, Clavinet and guitar riffs, which all mimic the killer bassline, being joined by what sound like brand new beats and more whistles than your average turn-of-the-90s rave. It's a fine revision that should introduce the track - and slightly odd project - to a whole new audience.

Review: Sudi Wachspress, AKA Space Ghost, delivers his eighth long-player in just 10 years. The Oakland, California native has carved out a sound that draws on house, disco, R&B and disco as well as strong influences from the LA beats scene, and the result is an album that operates largely at a walking pace, and as such is probably best appreciated in a home listening setting, with 'Feeling Real Good' and 'Prayer For You' providing the only obvious dancefloor moments. Standouts include the haunting 'Love Beam' with its haunting, looped vocal and bruk beat-y bass squelch, the druggy, slo-mo jazz-funk of 'Mystery Angel' and the sultry, soulful 'I'll Be Yours'.

Review: Liquicity is Maduk's Netherlands-based liquid leviathan, a platform which celebrates music that puts your arms in the hair and a smile on your face. It's all about the happy vibes and the warm sounds. Their latest VA EP is, accordingly, in that vein and it's a corker, with 8 tracks of sumptuous liquid from the likes of Makoto, Telomic and Polygon, all of which are remixes. The best is Telomic's reinvention of Pola & Bryson's 'Whisper To Me' featuring Sammie Bella, which has a delightfully crisp percussive underpinning and an equally joyous bassline, all of which sit just beneath Sammie's idyllic vocals. This is Liquicity to its core - check the release.

Review: As you'd expect, given the label's runaway success over the past few years, there are plenty of very familiar cuts on this 52-track 'best of' from the all-conquering Toolroom, including GotSome's tribal smash 'Nomad Chat', label boss Mark Knight's infuriatingly catchy, flute-driven Shovell collab 'Selecao', Mendo's sample-heavy G-houser 'Mooving' and CamelPhat's remix of Fatboy Slim. But there are plenty of less heavily rinsed gems on offer too, and with tracks from the likes of D.Ramirez, Leftwing & Kody, Dosem, DJ S.K.T and Dale Howard plus reworks of Sterling Void and Todd Terry classics, it's a no-brainer for tech-house jocks on a budget.

Review: Influential and prolific, Dave Lee has been one of house music's major proponents of soulful, disco-tinged, vocal tracks. Without question, he was instrumental in its development. Produced With Love is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released and the first for more than 20 years. It proves that dance music with character still exists and rather than rely on sampling older records, the overwhelming majority of music is newly recorded. Rest assured that there's quite the supporting cast here, on the vocal front: the late great Diane Charlemagne on "Overnight Sensation", Canadian songstress and frequent Nick Holder collaborator Sacha Williamson on "I Recognize" and the legendary Linda Clifford on "Won't Let Go". Fellow London disco dons Horsemeat Disco collaborate on "Dancing Into The Stars" too. The second half of the collection focuses on Lee's impeccable remixes and yes: there is a version of "Must Be The Music" and a track by the inimitable Peven Everett entitled "Love Is Thicker Than Water" alongside several other gems.

Review: Alex Puddu's Afro Soul Prophecy project continues to blaze into the year with pure molten lava grooves. "Daddy's Groove" is a perfect summer heater with its laid back horns that ooze over the wah wah licks and strutting rim-shots. "Let Me Be Your Lover" takes more of a Latin approach with its upbeat rhythm and bossa tendencies. Listen out for those cosmic guitars in the background... Dreamy business.

Review: Dave Allison's Kinjo Music has been in business for 10 years now and what a fitting time to release a compilation of his greatest hits (and near misses) in the form of the Coastal Grooves LP. It's 14 cuts of disco and deep house goodness to soundtrack anyone's perfect summer; who'd have thought this bloke's from Montreal, eh! We knew he could knock out a brilliant edit, but he's pretty decent on the remixes too. Highlights include his smooth and funky rendition of Jorge Montiel & Juan Laya's "Got To Be Music", his ultra-deep take on Los Charly's Orchestra's "Everlasting Love" and his downright groovy and uplifting vision of Faze Action's "Freak For Your Love".

Review: Given the sheer volume of material he releases, Alien Disco Sugar is undoubtedly worthy of a "best-of". Happily, Gravity, Stars & Sugar provides just that, gathering together 24 of his best re-edits, remixes, mash-ups and original productions. Unsurprisingly, it's a cheery, fun-time affair, with material veering from the disco-house swing of "Music Sounds Better With You" tribute "Better With You" to sensual, filter-heavy slow jams (see "I Can So Give You Love", in particular), via a swathe of red-hot, dub-flecked disco, boogie, Balearic and P-funk revisions. As if that wasn't enough to tempt you, he's also included a pair "best of" DJ mixes to help entertain you on long drives, train journeys, and during the two weeks you'll have to wait for his next EP.

Review: Back in 2013 Greek producer Mister T hooked up with half-Thai, half-Scottish nu-jazz singer Jean Honeymoon for the excellent The Secret. Well they've finally got round to repeating the magic and the result is Take Me Away. There are three tracks on the EP, all of which continue with the smooth, retro-lounge vibes previously explored. The title track and "Love Is Wonderful" adds some '90s jazzy hip-hop moods to the mix, whilst "Let Your Voice Be Free" revisits that so-close-you-can-almost-taste-it mythical bar by the beach in 1960s Rio.

Review: Not only does this 18-track album promise an excellent selection of music, but the accompanying one-hour mixed version is mixed by DJ Kumatozz, who weaves the lush, blissed out sounds seamlessly together for the ultimate listening experience. Brought to you on the Bass Machine imprint, expect spaced out atmospherics, sonorous vocals and deftly placed beats to predominate, alongside some more pumping 4/4 beats to get the party started. The album kicks off with It Was Ted - "Crush" and takes us through such moments as Pledge - "Be Alrite (Arrows Of Time remix)" with is ticking beats and hypnotic rhythms, to SoundBwoy Addiction - "Jungle Sess (Private Mix)" which takes things a bit more streetwise with a clear grime influence. A lovely array of sounds are on offer here - be sure to check out the mix as well.
