The Beat Goes On EP
The Beat Goes On - (6:29) 117 BPM Hot
Love You More - (6:13) 105 BPM
The One I Need - (6:36) 99 BPM
Boogie Body - (6:22) 115 BPM
Review: While he's prone to occasional trips into skewed Balearic territory, London-based Grecian Alien Disco Sugar is often at his best when focusing on reworking classic disco and boogie gems. He begins this latest EP with his take on the Whispers' cheery disco standard "And The Beat Goes On", adding tougher beats and a whisper of Italo-style arpeggio chug. "The One I Need" is a deliciously loved-up, string-laden chunk of reworked close-dance disco (think Barry White, and you're close), while "Boogie Body" is the kind of celebratory P-funk jam that evokes images of nappy-clad Funkadelic members gyrating around on stage. Meanwhile, for those that fancy some eyes-closed, slo-mo disco/boogie sweetness, "I Love You More" is almost perfect.

What You Want - (3:44) Hot
Review: Out on Big M, Superfort drop two energetic nu-funk breaks beauties on this tasty new single. "Beat Boulevard" rocks a frantic, cymbal-heavy drum track with acapella cuts from Ultramagnetc MC's seminal "Poppa Large" cleverly cut-up amongst the madness. There's also the more smooth and summary "What You Want", which is well worth checking out.

You - (5:13) 159 BPM
King Of The Beats - (7:00) 169 BPM Hot
Review: Dom returns to his Dubs Dungeon once again and re-opens the Dillinja crypt for two more long-coveted dubplates. "You" is fresh from 94 with subs so thick and misty they'll freeze you to your bones and breaks so sharply edited you now have pierced ears just reading this short review, this was a major missile for the AWOL massive. "King Of The Beats" is a year or two deeper into Dillinja's unmatchable discography with a killer b-boy sample, rocket fuel drums and a waspy bassline that stings from a 10 mile radius. Jungle royalty.

Review: And now for a little Stexy time. One of the most prolific breaks producers to emerge from Italy since Santos, barely a month passes without another session of his wily and whimsical party concoctions. "Play Funk With My Beat" includes a few old faves ("Funky Dog" and "Fat Burger") which bump and grind alongside new tracks such three new remixes of "Funky In The Street" by Jazz K Lipa, Funky City and Ez Funkin and, our favourite, "Bizarre", an uptempo freak out which rattles us back to the good old 80s thanks to a diced and spliced version of Duran Duran's "Reflex". A party must-have, it's guaranteed to coax those oldies onto the floor!

Backed By Dope Beats
Backed By Dope Beats - (1:58) Hot
The Sunshine - (2:47) 122 BPM
Played by: Ez Icarus
Review: Here's an interesting proposition: a brand new dancefloor hip-hop cut based around the famous groove sampled for King Bee's "Back By Dope Demand". The new rap vocals are pretty tidy, while the groove is pepped up by some particularly large military drum fills and jazzwise percussion solos. Breathing new life into something so famous is tough but EZ Icarus and Octopus have done a very good job. Flip for "Sunshine", a loose and snappy rework of Spanky Wilson's ace version of "Sunshine Of Your Love". Both cuts are short and sweet, but pack enough punch to suggest major rotations in all-action sets.

Analog Beat (Kit Carson remix) - (6:14) 134 BPM
Review: Known more for his party-fuelled sample mastery, here we find Stex operating on a much ravier flex with the able assistance of Kit Carson. Bubbling acid, classic synths and retro ambient twinkles are the order of the day, leaving us floundering somewhere in Orbital's fridge or LFO's sock drawer. Kit's own remix is a much spikier affair with rusty hi-hats and more assertive top-end hook. Naughty.

Review: Putting aside the question of whether Ram Skank is in fact back by, um, "dope demand", this full-length debut should warm the cockles of anyone who likes their beats and breaks heavy, groovy and laden with cheeky samples. In true Big M fashion, Back By Dope Demand restlessly shifts between styles, mashing up vocals, breaks, beats, rave noises and sub cabinet-busting basslines with gleeful abandon. Expect to hear future garage rinse-outs, breakbeat bombs, funk breaks smashers, revivalist rave jams, 4/4 bubblers and a skipload of skank-heavy bangers. Killer.

Review: Not to be confused with FWD's Youngsta, DDJs' Youngstar is also a veteran of the UK garage and grime sphere. In fact, this man has been doing it longer and his tunes have been firing up the scene since 2001. While he used to focus more exclusively on garage, this contemporary material is all about the grime bars and, as you'll be able to tell from the title, the bars are short but extremely effective. With eighteen cuts to choose from, this is the perfect material to use either as heavy DJ artillery, or for part-time vocalism if you're in the spittin' mood. One thing is for sure, though, this is A-class material from an underrated legend of the UK grime game.

Review: The cover artwork may make this look like some kind of 90s trance release, but it's actually a decidedly killer collection of contemporary breakbeat-influenced productions from a selection of up-and-coming artists. There's plenty for breaks/bassheads to sink their teeth into, from the bleep-laden, electro-influenced business of Horny Andy's "Broken Minimal" and the warped, dubstep-rock mash-up madness of Beat Muffin's Damage Breaks re-rub, to the disco-sampling shenanigans of The Random Scarves and Stex's bizarre classical/breaks/electro/jungle cut "Opera 32 Jupiter". Oh, and a punchy electro-breaks remix of Chamber from up-and-coming Bristolian PODGE.

Review: Young NRG founder Stefano Ricci (AKA Stex) has been producing and releasing music since the 1990s, both on his own and with regular collaborator Teo Ederle under the Dasya guise. Here, Ricci presents a bumper selection of disco-funk inspired tracks from his personal archives. Musically it's surprisingly diverse, offering a mix of tweaked re-edits (see "Turn The Funky On"), cut-up disco-house jams featuring familiar disco and boogie samples ("Just in Analog", "Funkin 4U") and occasional forays into strutting funk breaks (the James Brown-biting "Big Mama Funky"). In essence, it's basically a collection of tried-and-tested DJ tools for disco loving house DJs.

Review: The uber-prolific Stex wraps up his planet series with a clutch of killer remixes of his cut n' choppy "Earth". Geon goes straight for the breakbeat G-spot with a pumping tech funk remix that's not dissimilar to Elite Force's material, McTwist's remix opts for a more playful jam with a killer build up and a classic Finger Lickin' style bass riff, Jazz K Lipa's rendition is more contemporary with plenty of high-end bleeps and whistles while The Random Scarves give it a beastly 4/4 electro facelift.

Review: The Spanish producer also regularly known as DJ DeejayKul is known as Raul Navarrete to his Mum and according to his SoundCloud profile "is a compulsive music lover who has played a big part in the Spanish club scene since the late 1980s". You can tell he's experienced from listening to his new EP on Stockholm's Swedish Brandy Productions. "Senses" is straight up deep house for sexy, late night people that lovers of the Dessous sound will appreciate. "Hearing" has that classic late nineties deep house sound that takes us back to the heyday of the sound popularised by the likes of Guidance and Distance. He saves the best for last on the super sensual "Touch", everything about this track from the rhythm and the bassline to the chords is absolutely tight!

Review: Featuring 22 full-length cuts plus a 42-minute mixed version, there's no faulting the VFM on offer from this Jim Sharp-helmed Bomb Strikes comp. Featuring tracks and mixes from the likes of The Allergies, The Nextmen, Ugly Duckling, Alice Russell, Lack Of Afro and Sam Krats, the emphasis here is on the kind of dusty funk/soul grooves that sit well alongside hip-hop and breaks - as opposed to the stack-heeled, silver-jumpsuited kind that goes better with disco - with standouts for this writer including Sly5thAve's moody, cinematic 'Shiznit' (think Shaft staring broodily out of a rain-streaked diner window) and Skill's 'Break It Down', a stuttery, stop-start gift for the jazz-dancers.

Review: Featurecast flexes hard into the crates right here: digging deep over 20 years of party breaks, he's put together the definitive journey of funk with the refreshing devil may care attitude we've come to expect. His selection excavations are here for all the benefit from... The Wiseguys's lesser-spotted jam "One For The Ladies", Lack Of Afro's horn-melting "The Outsider", Max Sedgley's sugar-sweet "Happy", Flevans' Afrofunk shake-up "12 Apostles" and Featurecast and Aldo Vanucci's 2008 hoe-down stomper "Blue Grassed Devil" are just some are just some of the floor-matured classics amid the 25 cuts on offer here. And that's before we even get to awesome mix. Don't dillydally on this one.

Review: When we think of classic cop and spy shows from the golden age of the '60s and '70s, we automatically think of tough, no-nonsense heavy drinking guys, foxy gals in negligees, vintage cars and of course killer, out-there incidental music. Here the ever-brilliant Soul Jazz present a lovingly compiled selection of gems from the anonymous vaults of library music that would have been supplied to all kinds of shows and films back in the day. Now they get to live again, and with their lush orchestration, jazzy drums, meandering funky basslines and wah-wah guitar, thrilling they are too.

Review: No introductions necessary: Suburban Base shaped and fuelled rave music as knew it. Uncle Dugs documents, celebrates and champions rave music as know it. On this quarter-century retrospective Dugs brings everyone up to speed as he moves through the 90s and, in turn, the development of hardcore into jungle and drum & bass. 50 seminal tracks deep, from Remarc's soundclash slewing "RIP" to Marvellous Cain's jungle blueprint "Hitman" via Q Bass and E Type's early explorations into synthesis on "Hardcore Will Never Die" and formative junglism from DJ Hype, our affable Uncle continues to join the dots with the past and the future with supreme levels of detail and knowledge.

Review: It's not often a true legend delivers the goods long into their career but MC Fats is still delivering the goods as this LP proves. Filled with collaborations and remixes from the MC Fats Collective and beyond and pushing his unique sound to the next level. Huge names like Calibre, Basher, Total Science, SIN, Lynx and Dom & Roland move in to attack their own slices of the action, taking what could simply be an outstanding LP to cult status and beyond. It's no surprise that a man of his experience could wrangle in some of the biggest names in D&B for his album - what is surprising though is that none of the input is an afterthought. Each contributor has given their best and it shows.

Review: A new mix from perennial party faves Soul Clap is always a cause for celebration, but there's something extra-special about this particular exercise in dancefloor nostalgia. Nice 'N' Ripe Allstars sees them revisit the bulging back catalogue of Grant Nelson's Nice 'N' Ripe label, an imprint that has tracked the rise, fall and subsequent rebirth of UK garage since its' birth in 1993. Soul Clap's mix - an action-packed 30-track affair featuring some of their own edits and remixes of classic cuts - does a great job in showcasing the best the label has to offer, flitting between early US garage style jams, loose soulful house, sturdy two-step, bass-heavy speed garage and the kind of long-lost jams which should be bitten by today's retro-minded house producers. In doing so, it offers an impeccable history lesson.

Review: Since launching in 2010, Miami's Disco Balls label have brought us music from the likes of C Da Afro, Frank Virgilio, The Stoned and Ken@Work; since 2015, they've also been serving up annual genre-based compilations, with this nu-disco best-of selection for 2020 having house, disco house and jackin' house sisters. Across 19 tracks from almost as many artists you'll find everything from raw funk (Jerem A's 'Do The Do'), via loose-limbed jazz-funk (Dubplate Disco's 'Between Us'), to shimmering Balearic grooves (Zulu Natives' 'Say It Yeah Now'), making for a collection that's well worth investigating, particularly if you like your nu-disco on the faithfully 70s-sounding side...

Review: Having impressed with the first part of their 'oddities and rarities' collection, Love Forgotten, A Man Called Adam return with a second and final round-up of new, rare and unreleased tracks, remixes and collaborations. It's naturally a mighty fine set all told, with highlights coming thick and fast throughout. There's not enough space to list all of the high points, but our current favourites include the gentle samba-broken beat fusion of 'Estelle (Mystic Beats Instrumental)', bass-heavy breakbeat jam 'This is London' (a collaboration with Chris Coco), the deep analogue house hypnotism of 'Someone Else', the 'One Latin Rascal' dub of 'AMFP' -a bustling, percussive dancefloor treat - and the sensationally warm, live and languid 'Jisco Dazz Mix' of 'Que Tal America', where fusion band Bah Samba plays a leading role.
