Review: Black 8 is not limited by one subgenera of house or techno and, instead, he likes to dabble in a bit of minimal or indulge in some progressive as he pleases. This new beast of an EP for Hope Recordings lies on the more stripped-down end of the spectrum, serving up to terrific dancefloor swingers that will slip in pretty much any set without much effort - the tools of tools! Both "Before The Rising Dawn" and "Euphoria" are powerful juggernauts to conquer pretty much any floor out there, dusting their logical percussion patterns rigidly among solitary melodic patterns. Strong, no-nonsense remixes come from Dmitry Molosh, Interlaxxis, and Dimitri Nakov.
Review: On Taken Away, MORD's offshoot continues its mission to deliver hard-edged but inventive techno. The work of Ruman, it applies experimental sensibilities to the dance floor. The brilliantly-named "They Were Dying of Old Age, That's It" is led by gnarly kicks and noisy percussion, with Ruman layering in intense bleeps. Similarly, "Faced With A Formful of Clever People" resounds to high-paced, bass frequencies. While the dense, rolling "Look At It" and the grainy drums of "10,000 Hours" both point to a clubbier approach, the overall approach is intense and visceral - most ably embodied by the grating riffs and high-paced industrial techno of "Mary Got A Quarter".
Review: Taking a trawl through ePM's archives, the eighth volume of Selected throws up a collection of killer remixes from some of electronic music's most respected names. Robert Hood turns Oliver Way's "Stained Glass Shadows" into a piano house banger, led by celebratory keys and a nagging acid line. In contrast, the Carl Finlow remix of Theiz' "Motor City Bliss" is a beautiful, melancholic electro track, shiny synths encased in steely drums, while Aux 88 drops an acid-heavy version of Techmarine Bottom Feeders' "A Quagmire of Confusion". There's also an abstract dimension to the release, with MGUN delivering a wonderfully woozy take on Esteban Adame's "Home Sick" - a compelling end to this fine remix collection.
