Review: It would be fair to say that Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is one of the better-known Italo-disco anthems, which makes it all the more surprising that Dark Entries has chosen to reissue it. This is not a criticism, though; they've given Maurice Cavalieri and Giorgio Stefani's original the remaster treatment, and it sounds even more alien, exciting and oddball as it did back in 1983. The original vocal version - all woozy synths, throbbing arpeggios, wonky beats and typically eccentric vocals - is backed by the Instrumental version, which is the preferred mix of choice for many Italo DJs. If it's not in your collection already, it should be.
Review: One of the biggest sleeper hits to be exhumed from the annals of Italo disco thanks to Dark Entries back in 2014, it gets its 2021 update for the CDV dancefloor or Ibiza pool party with class. It's a release helping resurrect the Roman label AUTUM which is spearheaded by Dana Ruh's snare-heavy remix which dubs-out a vocal loop from the original to present the track with a fresh layer of deep house and technical beats. With reinforced drums all the more in Valentino Kanzyani's rework, the artist holds down the original as if squeezing more juice out of the much loved hit to then add a jazzy reprise at the end for that extra sunset effect.
Review: Should you require an introduction to the camp, sleazy and synth-heavy world of 1980s Italo-Disco, this superb set should be an essential purchase. It naturally includes some highly influential and classic cuts - see Mr Flagio's throbbing "Take A Chance", Charlie's intergalactic "Spacer Woman", and a track that helped inspire the Chicago house movement, "Feel The Drive" by Doctor's Cat - alongside a clutch of rarities and lesser-celebrated workouts such as Mr Mine's "Hypnotic Tango", Clio's "Faces" (which sounds like much of the Pet Shop Boys' debut album, "Please"), Wet's "That's The Game" and the Latin-influenced, horn-heavy strut of Vivian Vee's "Remember".
