Review: A UK disco master with almost 30 years experience, when Dave Lee aka Joey Negro presents his selections we all sit up and listen. Here's his take on the year that was and it's brimming with 19 rich and rewarding gems to see us through the holidays. Highlights include the deep gospel shuffle of "Reach Out (Atjaz remix)" by Sean McCabe, the sizzling crackle of camp disco accelerator "Unique (New York Underground mix)" by Danube Dance & Kim Cooper and Pezzner's warm synth funk rework of "Candy Coated Perfection" by Opolopo and Diane Charlemagne.
Review: Since first popping up on Classic back in 2015, Chicago stalwart Chrissy (once famed for his juke productions as Chrissy Murderbot, but not embracing his house and disco roots) has barely put a foot wrong. "Back in Time", his third single for Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon's label, is another surefire hit; a delightfully celebratory vocal workout blessed with nods towards classic disco, Maurice Fulton's Syclops project (check the meandering analogue synth bassline) and sing-along house. Of the producer's two versions, it's the Extended Mix, with its additional bassline pressure and punchy drum fills, that's the superior choice. Arguably even better is Crackazat's swinging, piano-heavy Extended Remix, which comes on like a long-lost vocal house anthem from the mid '90s.
Review: Hands down the biggest compilation of trance music to hit 2021 so far is this epic rundown by Armada. Literally 100-tracks large, the compilation delivers extended versions of tracks by much loved trance royalty in Armin Van Buuren and Above & Beyond to intriguing collaborations between Paul van Dyke & Sue McLaren, Ferry Corsten & Trance Wax (tip!) or Tinlicker & Robert Miles (classic!). Dig deeper still and you'll find diamonds from Chicane, Elysian, Maarten De Jong and the undeniable Ilan Bluestone. Buy one, by them all!
