Movin (Let's All Chant mix) - (4:07) 122 BPM
Give & Take - (6:02) 103 BPM
Review: A legendary funk band from Brooklyn, Brass Construction blazed a trail throughout the 70s producing grade-A vintage boogie. Much of their repertoire has been plundered by sample-heavy acts since, but here we get the original and true album version of 1975's "Movin". Displaying the kind of musicianship that could only be learnt by slogging it out on the notorious Chitlin' Circuit. Moogs and mellotrons, funky bass and smooth vocals, the song is still a party bomb now. However the SAW-house style extended/Back To My Roots mix and the syrupy 80s pop of "Give And Take" both add some 'challenging' schmaltziness.

William Welt - "Shortcut Home" - (7:16) 125 BPM Hot
Review: Brighton based Construct represents all the shades of house and techno and everything in between, particularly as seen on this mini compilation. Starting out with the dubby, rolling tech house of Walter Walk's "Silence", this one has some nice atmospherics for the closing set. Next up Hugo Barrit's "Mason" is a tough and stripped warehouse techno jam that fans of the Fachwerk sound will appreciate. The same goes for William Welt's "Shortcut Home", which no doubt takes its cues from its sister label Colombage: melodic with a nice bit of funk. Elsewhere Stratowerx' "Something Else" throws a right curveball at us on this whack-electro stormer; this guy has a pretty unique take on the sound and we're diggin' it!

For The Dome - (4:14) 125 BPM
Review: Fred P delivers his second release of 2020 on a label that is tailor made for his tough but soulful sound - Rekids offshoot Stranger in the Night. The title track is a linear, driving affair; powered by a powerful bass drum and featuring a droning riff at its heart, these elements make for a hypnotic fusion. "Construction" also makes effective use of just a few sounds, with a murky bass coming together with dissected vocal samples and brooding synths to create an eerie sound. On "Alphabet City", the US producer goes deeper, with looped chords and sensuous strings unravelling over a jacking rhythm, while "For The Dome" is a beautifully evocative slice of soulful techno.

Shadow & Construction EP
Shadow & Construction - (6:46) 118 BPM Hot
Deep Stripped Down N' Dirty - (5:36) 120 BPM
Rthoms - (6:54) 118 BPM
Review: Amazingly, this is the 17th Local Talk release, not bad going since they only first started operating in mid 2011. It's a slight departure from many of the label's outings, in that it doesn't sound like a shameless homage to classic instrumental US garage. Instead, the three tracks sound like fusions of contemporary house and classic basement-bothering garage dubs, with some modern bass music influences thrown in. The deep and chiming "Rthoms" [sic] is our pick, though the loose but tribal rhythms of "Shadow & Construction" do come close. The organ-heavy "Deep Stripped Down & Dirty", however clumsily named, is also pretty hot.

Bring In The Katz (feat Pork Chop) - (4:24)
Bring In The Katz (L-Vis 1990 Dub) - (3:38) Hot
Review: Serious Baltimore business right here. KW Griff and Pork Chop's dark, chopped up club rider rolls with beefy kicks and a classic break. Released last year it's been picked up on by L-Vis 1990 who's gone ahead and given it a royal Night Slugs makeover. Subby, stripped back and munching its way through 808s, all that remains of the original are the vocal snippets and the same authentic sense of edge Griff and Chop conjured up in the first place. Heavyweight stuff.

Review: After the shimmering pop tendencies of his recent album and accompanying single, L-Vis 1990 hits up Night Slugs with five downright nasty slices of stern-faced jackhammer material. Whether it's the whumping bass of "Workout", the grinding hats of "Video Drone" or the more restrained techno of "Hard Drive", this is clearly a statement on how to make cruelly effective floor tracks with the DJ in mind. For a no-frills approach to tools, you'd be hard pressed to find a selection that slots in between the current mess of genres in clubs as easily as these grim rippers.

Capricorn - (4:28) 100 BPM
Native - (3:36) 60 BPM
CC101 - (3:57) 99 BPM Hot
CC102 - (4:10) 100 BPM
Review: Focussing on "raw material aimed straight for the dance floor", Club Constructions returns after three years of hiatus with newcomer DJC, and whether the artist is a Night Slugs member in disguise or a complete debutant is still a mystery. That doesn't matter, though, because we a tune like "Capricorn" is so rough and banging that we just want to beat it, not thinking too much about where it from or why; "Native" is the perfect tool to follow on from it, and its broken shreds of drums are a delight when hear loud. "CC101" is perhaps our pick of the lot - but it's a close call between all of them - as we're just madly into that sort of slowed-down Detroit-style techno funk, but "CC102" is nothing short of spectacular, and would easily go down a storm in DJ sets from Theo Parrish, all the way to Ben UFO.

Review: Following his impressive debut on Metronomic a couple of years back, DJ Mas Corazon makes his debut appearance on Greek label Kraak Records with the balearic nu-disco vibes of "Love Construction" and its gorgeous vocal throughout. Second offering "A Better Day" sees the New York City-based producer head poolside for more sun in the fun, on this low slung boogie-funk number that'll have you dancing well after sunset.

The SalMar Construction
The SalMar (part 1) - (19:42) 107 BPM
The SalMar (part 2) - (22:05) 126 BPM
Review: Belgium's Sub Rosa has been going for absolutely ages, and since the '90s it has released some particularly wonderful electronic music. This latest EP comes from new artist Salvatore Martirano, who proceeds to drop some more electronic jazz on the label's roster. Calling this "conceptual" would be wrong, but Martirano certainly has a plan on his debut EP. Part 1 of the SalMar Construction is veritable experimental music, where field recordings meet submerged beats and deep soundscapes with dashes of noise. Part 2 transforms into a heavier, Kevin Drumm-style framework. For those who don't know, that means gnarly swirls of feedback and whole load of modular tripping. Recommended.

Review: German house enigma, STL, usually sticks to his own Something imprint when venturing out of his studio. In fact, he's only really collaborated with relatively high profile labels like Perlon and Smallville Records in the past, so seeing him launch the new Boogie Box imprint is quite the treat. He's in an eerie, pensive mood for the opening "Hide & Seek", blasting out his signature percussive roll, while "Haze & Kraze" places a heavier stomp onto the groove, and delivers a classic, hazed-out STL bomb for the darker, deeper ends of the set...

Review: Forged from a transatlantic exchange of sounds, pastoral house maverick Bnjmn and wayfaring noise wielder Best Available Technology have spent the past few years piecing together this album for Astro:Dynamics. Forming a logical middle ground between the two artists respective styles, De/Re-Constructions glides between atmospheric textural studies and plaintive, crackling leftfield house with ease. There's spinnable material available in the shape of "Tred", but this is largely a headphones affair to get lost in, from the cyclical twitterings of "Wired" to tense industrial reduction "Rift". It rarely stays in one place and yet never feels disjointed, which is impressive given the distinct minds at work on this unique project.

Review: Over the last few years, Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson has spent a fair amount of time mentoring Peacey, a young producer with oodles of talent. That much is proved by the rising star's expansive debut album, a superb 16-track set that combines sizzling colo cuts with a string of inspired collaborations. The Edinburgh-based artist sets his stall out via the luscious horn arrangements and immersive ambient electronics of 'Play It By Ear', before drifting between head-nodding R&B loveliness (Oveous hook-up 'Love In The Forest'), sensual and seductive, soul-flecked deep house ('Hold Me Back' with Clyde and Atjazz), mid-tempo boogie-soul ('Playground' with Rona Ray), dubby and dreamy downtempo grooves ('Last Night's Dream'), deep and techy, spoken word-sporting dancefloor workouts ('Culture Bandit' with Vanessa Hidary) and jazz-funk influenced excellence (LaRoye collab 'In The Distance').

Review: For his third artist album, Peter Trimbacher aka Metapattern has landed on Mord. It's a good fit because the label has always bridged the gap between abstract sounds and hard, industrial techno. Silicone Cell embodies these sensibilities. "Construct Of Impurity" teems with waves of droning bass and tingling metallic percussion, but it avoids the dance floor. "Cleansing" also features layers of gnarly percussion and bass tones that create a striking abstract piece. In contrast, "Artificial Awareness" is a hypnotic, chiming groove, while on "Descent Into Oblivion", Trimbacher delivers the kind of tough, lean techno that Mord is known for. There's also a hint of the dystopian vibe that Bay Mooy's label occasionally gives off, audible of the mechanical stepping rhythm of "Miasma".

Review: Legendary DJ and bon viveur Harvey brings us a third collection of Balearic grooves inspired by his residency at Ibiza's notorious Pikes Hotel, which is now into its fifth year. Highlights of Volume III include Brass Construction's barrio funk classic 'Now Is Tomorrow' and an ultra-chilled reworking of River Ocean's 'Love And Happiness', while in-between you'll find mellow 80s pop, meandering YMO-esque synth excursions, laidback disco from the Peter Jacques Band, horizontal deep house grooves, lounge-y jazz and more besides - as, well, needless to say, as more gently fluttering Spanish guitars than you could clack a pair of castanets at...

Review: It's not all that long since Local Talk's first Talking House compilation dropped. Given the sheer volume of 12" singles from the label - there seems to be one every week these days - it's little surprise to see this follow-up dropping in double-quick time. The label's best material has always been superb, and there are some real gems here. Check, for example, Dirtytwo's clever (and exceptionally well executed) fusion of HNNY's "For The Very First Time" and Midnight Star's "Midas Touch", John Mood's "Basement Romance" (clearly inspired by classic Mood II Swing), and Cle's colossal piano house bomb "The Jam". Oh, and the thrill-packed blast of Balearic magic that is Fred Everything's "Brothers & Sisters (AM Pacific)".

Review: 14 years in the making! Krust's follow up to 'Hidden Knowledge' is every bit as diverse, uncompromising and explorative as you'd hope. Blurring the lines between jungle and techno, your brain and the dancefloor, time and space, across the collection the Bristol pioneer takes us to some strange and singular places; the tension and sci-fi isolation of 'Known Truths', the swaggering space funk of 'Keter The Heavenly', the marching drama and powerful sense of foreboding on 'Negative Returns', the blitzkrieg amen-shattered opener 'Hegel Dialectic', the list goes on. Each cut building and merging to create a truly unique landscape that offers up something new on every investigation, it'll take another 14 years to unravel this album's many mysteries. Essential.

Review: A legend in the house to be spoken in the same sentence as Ed Rush, Optical, Zinc and Roni Size, Bristol's own Krust takes it strangeways on Crosstown Rebels - and the label's third installment of album remixes. Diving back into that deep and hopeful sound of '90s drum and bass, breakbeat and soul is a rare UNKLE remix of "Hegel Dialect", that like Hodge's remake of "Constructive Ambiguity" lifts its inspiration of course from the halcyon days of hardcore, jungle and rave with ghostly atmospheres to boot. With a most fitting wildcard entrant to cap off this great remix series - that has so far included Masters At Work, Four Tet, Damian Lazarus, Batu, Calibre, LCY and Flynn - sweet New Yorkian house vibes and ambient percussion come through in DJ Nature's remix of "Deep Fields Of Liars". Krust & Crosstown equals result!

Cast your eyes down Crosstown's curation and you'll find heavy hitters like UNKLE and Calibre in the mix next to Four Tet and more contemporary club focused acts like Batu, Flynn, LCY and Hodge. Review: As head of Fachwerk along with Roman Lindau and Sascha Rydell, Mike Dehnert has cultivated a weighty brand of techno that still contains a noticeable element of funk. He's also the most prolific of the three, with countless digital albums produced over the years in addition to pair of long players issued on Delsin and Fachwerk and his occasional dalliances with other labels like Echocord and the Clone Basement Series. Outside of Fachwerk, Marsel van der Wielen's Delsin is perhaps the one other label you'd closely associate with Dehnert and it's little surprise to see the Dutch imprint collar him for the 12-track Lichtbedingt. Described by the label as "yet another subtle evolution away from the chord driven, functional sound" Dehnert was initially known for, the album incorporates moments of beatless electronic experimentalism, broken bass, and swinging house, with the results still resolutely Dehnert!

Review: Despite being operational for almost two decades, Delsin has a higher hit rate than nearly any other techno label. This is audible on Cameron 10, an eight-track compilation from the Dutch imprint. The Invariants deliver deep, atmospheric techno for the floor on "Ritzy", while Artefakt's contribution, "Anemic Cinema", is a reflective broken beat affair. Delsin has coaxed a track form Claro Intelecto, who delivers the bass-heavy but mysterious electro of "Hurt". Newcomers also get a platform, with Sentomea dropping the slow-burning dub house of "Ease of Life" and Shlomo impressing on "The Quest", a tunnelling techno groove that also features hushed angel chants. If that wasn't enough Giegling's Vril and Gunnar Haslam complete the package with bleep-laden and lo-fi tracks respectively.

Review: It's not often we see Ashley Burchett try his had at ambient or experimental productions, so it's about time we did. "Medlab" introduces this EP, and for its brief 40 seconds it sounds like a purring space shuttle combing the outer-limits of an unknown galaxy. It sets the tone for the serious "Burden Of Proof"; although looping to infinity, its musical elements do vary to a point of actually being musical. "Out-last", the second of four ambient tracks, rattles and bends like a creaking door in an echo-chamber inside of a sunken submarine, while there's something sonically dismantled about the warped sounds on "Construct Of The Mind". Fans of Spherical Coordinates on Token will warm to the cool, dark and mysterious jungle sounds of the EP's title track, while Phase delivers what he does best in "Systems Theory". Something different from Phase and something new from Token.

Review: Here's a tantalizing prospect: an expansive collection of edits and reworks old and new from some of the greatest exponents in the disco scene. With such quality fare on offer, picking highlights is tough, but keep an eye out for the contributions from Frico (a straightened-out and chopped-up version of Orlando Johnson & Trance's boogie classic "Chocolate City"), DJ Prime (a soaring version of disco-soul classic "Nothing's Gonna Hold Us Back"), Manix (the filter-heavy disco-funk workout "Hangin Through") and Alkalino (the heavy P-funk jam "This is a Party"). There's also another chance to enjoy scene classics from Revivra (their brilliant 2010 rework of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?") and The Apple Scruffs (the vocoder-laden Pink Floyd disco cover "Another Brick In The Wall").

Dive EP
Dive - (7:05) 123 BPM Hot
Self Construction - (7:45) 127 BPM
Self Construction (dub) - (6:23) 127 BPM
Review: On Dive, French producer D'Julz shows how to achieve less with more. The title track is a hypnotic, stripped back techno groove, its tweaked frequencies combined with crashing cymbals to make for a relentless groove that ebbs and flows hypnotically. By contrast, "Self Construction" resonates to the sound of rich Detroit chords and features a wide-eyed breakdown. However, D'Julz doesn't sacrifice the dance floor impetus and its firing percussion ensures it'll have a place in more discerning DJs' boxes. In any event, there is also a dub take on "Construction", which focuses on the original track's percussion and adds in tough claps and slick acid lines.

Review: Essex might seem an unlikely base for someone creating decidedly wonky, off-kilter electronic music, but then Lapalux doesn't conform to lazy stereoptypes. Having previously impressed with a suitably strange but surprisingly melodic EP of abstract grooves on Picture Music, young producer Stewart Howard now finds himself dropping a debut album on Brainfeeder. Those who enjoyed his previous work will love When You're Gone. It solidifies his growing reputation as a bolder, edgier version of James Blake, offering a mix of twisted, next-level future R&B ("Yellow '90s"), touching downbeat soundscapes ("102 Hours Of Introductions"), delay-laden electronica ("Construction Deconstruction") and bright-eyed, abstract wonkiness ("Gutter Glitter").

Deconstruct - (4:58) 130 BPM

Time - (5:20) 114 BPM
Review: Eric van Wonterghem follows his 2014 release, Near Crash, on Adam X's label with this visceral four-tracker. Time Running Out is in a similar vein to his Sonic Groove debut; "Construct" sets the tone with its noisy, crunchy beats and insistent, relentless rhythm. "Deconstruct" is based on broken beats, but is also distorted and raw, climaxing in an explosion of white noise. "Ghost Cities" sees the Belgian producer deliver a cleaner, more linear approach, although droning grey clouds hover over the arrangement, but it's only a temporary reprieve for the listener, and the broken beats and lurching bass of "Time" brings the release to a powerful end.

Review: Douglas Greed was always one of the more interesting minimal house producers, and on Recombinated he shows why he still enjoys that status. "Aenima" starts life as a tribal house groove, but soon slides into a droning, bass-heavy affair, oozing sinister intent. "What Is My Territory" continues in a similar vein before veering into a reflective reverie. Meanwhile, "Schwarzteemagen" in its entirety is a ponderous affair, led by shaking percussion and a bluesy slide guitar. True to form though, Greed keeps his audience guessing till the end, and on "Lopez" brings the EP to a close with grinding, abstract rhythms.

Construction - (4:59) 118 BPM
Crystal Forest - (5:29) 127 BPM
Review: Sound Pellegrino comes through correct once again with Crystal, and reaffirms their status as one of the most interesting and successful independent label in the game. They've had a lot of big names, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 to name a few, but Crystal is bound to make a name for himself after something so alluring and funky as "Get It!?" featuring Teki Latex, and the bouncy electro swirls of "Telephonic" - a real lesson in 808 flexing. "Construction" is another full-blown monster and its raucous beat paradigms just jump out the mix and into your cortex, whilst "Crystal Forest" sounds like a techno replacement for Nintendo's Zelda series. Review: Given the expectancy hovering around a certain Cornish-rooted electronica artist making a comeback of sorts, it seems likely that Baron Mordant knew exactly what he was doing when teasing the source of this archival missive for Mordant Music as being a "nebulous collective with an analogue core" from "Cornwall 1992-1996". Whatever the case and whoever was responsible, it's a damn good thing that this expansive collection has been brought to light as it's quite magnificent. 22 tracks drenched in dour English tones and played out with a minimum of fiddly arrangements in favour of sustained ideas and hand-crafted magic to get any self-respecting electronica head giddy with excitement. Cue the lengthy online debates about who is responsible...
