Review: Kerri Chandler's first album of original productions since 2008 is an epic in every sense of the word: a vast, 24-track excursion recorded on location in a multitude of clubs around the world, with each track inspired by, and specifically designed to sound best inside, each of the selected venues. It's basically a love letter to some of his favourite clubs, created with guest vocalists and musicians, and is little less than a deep house masterpiece. There are far too many highlights to mention, but our current favourites include the bassbin-rattling bump of 'Subbie (Jackpot Mix) [Sub Club]', the heart-aching soulful house brilliance of 'Back To Earth [Knockdown Center]', the sax-sporting funkiness of 'The Morning Heat [La Grange]', the sunrise-ready beauty of 'Who Knows [Barbarellas]' and the Berlin-friendly deep house hypnotism of 'Sunrise [Watergate]'.

Review: Ludicrously prolific Montenegran producer Sascha Mitich needs no introduction to disco buyers, and now here comes his latest offering, which packs seven 70s-tastic re-edits. Among those sources we can identify this time around are Donna Summer's 'Rumour Has It', The Gibson Brothers' 'What A Life' and 'You' (presented here as 'All I Care About Is You' ) and an unidentified, male-sung take on 'I Can See Clearly Now', while of the tracks whose origin remains unknown, the standout for this reviewer is 'But It's Funky Music', whose gloriously cheesy squealin' Moogs give it something of a US sitcom theme vibe.

Review: At long last we can finally say that a Bushbaby album has landed on his home label at Southpoint, something we have been waiting to explore for a hot minute. The project is a fantastic collection of styles from the Brighton-native, who pulls together garage flavours in 'Woman's Touch' & 'L.I.A.B', alongside classic bassline grizzlies in 'Annihilation' and the'All N1te' VIP mix. We also get to see him explore a few different areas across the breadth of this project however, from the 80's inspired arrangements of both 'You Are Sleeping' and 'Shiny Purple', to the more soundscape driven styles of 'I Wonder (For Billy)' and 'Chekhov's Gun', the latter of which sees him explore a much techier approach. This is definitely a project worth exploring in long play as we see Bushbaby deliver a killer conquest of electronic dance music.

Review: Last year saw the release of three volumes of the '30 Years Of Strictly Rhythm' retrospective but the seminal New York label aren't done mining their back catalogue just yet! For 'Strictly Rhythms Vol 5' they hand over the keys to the vaults to Matt Edwards AKA Radio Slave, who's mashed 23 vintage Strictly cuts into two DJ mixes simply labelled 'Downtown' and 'Uptown'. The first mix (tracks 1-14) finds him in warm-up mode with much use of Dubs and Bonus Beats mixes, while for the second mix (tracks 15-23) he takes us down a more driving and tribalistic route - but rest assured, both sets are every bit as classy and diverse as the label itself.

Review: This various artists release from Born on Road is packed full of twisted sounds for you wrap your noggins around, and there's a sick blend of aesthetics and styles amongst all the filth. 'Turbulent Times' by Gray and Rider Shafique is wobbly and rolling, it packs all of its energy into the sub-bass and just flows out with style alongside some wicked MC work. 'Pieces of Eight' by Trex is a monstrosity of energy, with a superb drum section that packs more character into the arrangement than you can wag a finger at, whilst Bruk edges in over the top with 'Waps', showing what a hefty dose of technoid energy can bring to the beat. Big.

Review: Glitterbox resident Dr Packer is a leading light of the contemporary disco scene, while Dave Lee was arguably THE key architect of the whole post-house disco phenomenon in the first place. So when the former helms a compilation on the latter's label, you'd expect great things, and suffice to say you're very unlikely to be disappointed. Hell, for this writer the deep n' sultry JN Revival Mix of early 90s classic 'Do What You Feel' is worth the price of admission on its own, but with Packer's own remixes of label favourites making up over a third of the tracklist, the collection as a whole is pretty much unmissable.

Review: It's hard to believe that after all these years one of the founding forces in Detroit ghetto tech is only now, in 2020, releasing his debut album. Well...at 44 tracks large, maybe it's been worth the wait...coming from a man who back in the day helped set up Twilight 76 that released classics from the likes of DJs Assault, Deon and Slugo to Dave Clarke and Todd Osborne. More recently Godfather relaunched his Databass label which he now champions with an epic, straight-shootin' and unpretentious full time opus that takes in every angle of Detroit ghetto tech, be it the more contemporary, breakbeat and footwork sounds of "Smoke In The Air" to the gnarilier electro vibes of "The D". Review: Montenegrin producer/re-editor Sasha Mitich, better known as Mitiko, has been extremely prolific since emerging onto the scene around five years ago, reliably turning out a new album-length EP every few months - which has left him with a rich back catalogue to plunder for this 'best of' compilation. Most of the tracks here would appear to be re-edits rather than original productions, but if so then he's dug admirably deep - there are reworks of cuts by Sister Sledge, Janet Jackson and Kool & The Gang ('Celebremos' was the band's own Spanish-language version of 'Celebration'), but most of the other source material escapes us. Which, of course, just makes this set sound all the fresher!

There are some genuine gems, too, including a sparkling Hot Toddy nu-disco instrumental mix of Joey Negro's "Stomp Your Feet", an inspired Saison instrumental of Akabu & Linda Clifford's "Ride The Storm" that features two exquisite extended breakdowns, a must-have "Disco Blend Instrumental" of Joey Negro and Horse Meat Disco's "Candidate For Love", and a stellar, proto-house style dub of The APX's "Sweet Surrender".

Review: If we're counting correctly, this is the eighth album in the 'Too Slow To Disco' series overall, and the second 'Ladies Of...' volume, so you should have some idea what to expect by now! But for anyone who hasn't been introduced, slo-mo nuggets that are roughly contemporaneous with the disco era are the series' stock-in-trade, and they've unearthed some truly splendid nuggets here. See for instance 'Love The Way You Love Me', a surprisingly sensual groove from light entertainment stalwart Marti Caine that's absolutely dripping in funk - you'd swear that bassline was Imagination, for starters. There are one or two slightly over-schmaltzy moments but generally speaking these are late-night smoochers n' swayers of the highest order... soft focus, white wine and roses optional.

Review: Freestyle's series of genre-themed download bundles continues, with June's 'Afro & Latin!' and September's 'Funk!' comps now joined by this 40-track collection of soul and disco nuggets from the label's back catalogue. The set kicks off with a bona fide classic in the form of Omar's 'There's Nothing Like This', after which come 39 more cuts from the likes of Carleen Anderson, Kyle Audist and The Fantastics (not to mention, in featured vocalist form, Jocelyn Brown and Caron Wheeler). The title's something of a misnomer - the emphasis is firmly on 'new old' soul, future R&B and neo-soul rather than disco - but there's much to enjoy here all the same.

Review: It has been quite a year for the Toolroom institution. Celebrating their 15th birthday last year, they weren't ones to rest on their laurels, instead going full steam ahead with a bunch of genre defining compilations this year. But most importantly they have been instrumental in the comeback of funky house after a 20 year dormancy, with killer releases by the likes of Weiss, Cashio and boss man Mark Knight himself. Add to that one banging party at Chicago Social Club for Amsterdam Dance Event and it's evident that these guys are proper 24 hour party people. With a glorious year sadly coming to an end, celebrate a wonderful one that was on Best Of Toolroom 2019 with highlights not limited to: the rework of the Cevin Fisher classic "Freaks Come Out" by Jack Back, Hannah Wants & Kevin Knapp's deep down and dirty "Call Me" (extended mix), UK heroes Alan Fitzpatrick & Wheats delivering the certified banger "M27" and New York legend Todd Terry teaming up with Tuff London on "Psychodrama" featuring Jasmien Nanhekhan. Review: When operating under the V's Edits alias, re-edit maestro Valique can always be relied upon to bring the goods. It's little surprise, then, to find out that his latest collection of fresh cut-jobs - an epic affair featuring no less than 24 tracks - is packed to the rafters with high-grade fare. We don't have enough space to list all of the highlights, but we'd suggest checking out his rolling revision of Lee Dorsey's "Night People", the low-slung disco-funk heaviness of the Brass Construction rework ("Gotta Do It"), the intergalactic disco deepness of the Marvin Gaye revision ("Funky Space"), the lightly tooled-up, slowly unfurling take on Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica" and the sweeping, string-laden disco brilliance of "Miracle (V's Edit)".

Review: Album number three from Luxxury here. But where their 2006 debut was an electro/indie-dance affair and 2014's 'Luxxury Edits' compiled a load of the hazy, dropped-tempo re-edits they're best known for, 'It's Not Funny' finds them turning in 10 tracks that operate in Nang-esque nu-disco territory... complete with all the glistening 80s pop sheen, analogue synth sounds and yacht rock-ish overtones that description implies! There's nothing especially innovative or ground-breaking going on but fans of the style will find much to enjoy here (even if the falsetto vox can get a little relentless), with standouts including the dreamy, mid-paced 'Hold On' and Scissor Sisters-esque closer 'I Wanna Be Everything'.

Review: With the constantly evolving juke and footwork scenes looking stronger than ever before, we are always excited to see these mega-projects land in the store, with the latest one from Moondoctor taking the name 'Dopamine'. This project really does explore so many different areas of the sound, from the minimalist jungle-ready rolls of 'Addiction' and 'Loop Me', to the more Americanized rapid fire drum shots of '3 Eights' and vocal slaps of 'Dat Boi Raww'. Review: Hearty congratulations to Michael Reinboth, whose Compost Records' imprint recently celebrated its 25th birthday. As a way of marking this momentous occasion, the label has conjured up this expansive compilation, which offers up a blend of fresh remixes of label classics, overlooked revisions, bonus cuts and the odd hard-to-find classic (see Move D's superb "Hurt Me", which first appeared on the imprint in the mid-90s). Highlights are plentiful from start to finish, with Roman Flugel's throbbing rework of Beanfield's "Human Patterns", I:Cube's LFO-influenced re-make of A Forest Mighty Black's "Fresh In My Mind", Joakim's funk-fuelled acid take on Marbert Rocel's "Dance Slow" and Die Orangen's wonderfully druggy interpretation of Marsmobil's "Sometimes I Don't Regret" all catching the ear.

Review: While most of us have never heard of Winston, fellow dusty-fingered record collectors hold him in high esteem. On his contribution to Z Records' essential "Under The Influence" series it's easy to see why. His selections are uniformly superb and, bar a handful of cuts, almost unknown to anyone outside the serious collecting community. For proof, check the celebratory, slap-bass propelled disco-funk of Doug Payne and Polygon's "Holiday", the heady, high-octane disco thrills of Expose's "I Just Wanna Dance With You", the low-slung early funk-rap headiness of Jungle Band's "Jungleland (Part 2)" and the wickedly percussive salsa-disco heaviness of Suave's "Salsa Gon Gitcha". In other words, it's a killer collection of top-notch cuts that you'll never have heard before. What's not to like?
