Review: George Kelly's Athens-based Chopshop celebrate 15 years in the game with this best-of compilation that takes in cuts from the likes of Groove Armada (via Greg Wilson), Situation, Andy Bach, Bodie Lee, HP Vince and more, many of which - as is entirely in keeping with the label's name, of course - draw heavily on source material from the past. Dave Leatherman & Bruce Nolan kick us off with 'Sunny Side Up', which reworks Osibisa's 'Sunshine Day', and from there on out it's basically a non-stop disco/disco-house riot, with Bodie Lee paying tribute to Inner City on 'Let Me Take You Dancer', Wild Cherry chopped and looped to glorious effect by Delly on 'Movin' To The Groovin' and Alejandro Maria stealing the day with 'A Lot To Live For', which should really be called 'Stabs To Die For'.

Review: Dear Diary, today we received a copy of DJ Hybrid's long-awaited debut album Diary Of An International Junglist on Liondub International. It's 20 tracks fat and, as you'd expect from such a prolific and hard working artist, it's well worth the wait. Featuring collabs with the likes of Rider Shafique, Diligent Fingers, Madrush MC, Redders and MC Foxy, there's a lot of next level action to unpack but instant head-slicers include the space age purrs and twists of 'Find Your Way', the menacing darkness and sparse funk of 'Pull Out Ya Piece' and the bouncing and swagger of 'Live For Yourself.' These are just some the many stand-out bangers from an album by one of the scene's most consistent leading lights in the last 10 years. Made for junglists, by a junglist. It doesn't get better than this.

Review: Some 15 years after Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly launched their Permanent Vacation label with a fine compilation of the same name, the Munich-based pair return with a seventh showcase of treats from the imprint's now sizable roster of artists. As you'd expect, it's an eclectic and uniformly high-quality affair, with the 22 included cuts touching on everything from cheeky electro covers of Chris Rea (DMX Krew's rather good take on 'On The Beach'), deep nu-disco (the star-fall synths and Italo-disco bass of Kendal's Basorexia') and sun-soaked, 80s synth-pop-meets-dream house bliss ('Digital Joy' by Rees), to sleazy slow acid ('Lose Your Soul' by Zilas on Acid), late-night proto-house revivalism (Felice's 'Just Passing By') and rushing, breakbeat-driven dancefloor dreaminess (Dharma's 'The Epiphany'). In a word: excellent.

Review: Glitterbox resident Dr Packer is a leading light of the contemporary disco scene, while Dave Lee was arguably THE key architect of the whole post-house disco phenomenon in the first place. So when the former helms a compilation on the latter's label, you'd expect great things, and suffice to say you're very unlikely to be disappointed. Hell, for this writer the deep n' sultry JN Revival Mix of early 90s classic 'Do What You Feel' is worth the price of admission on its own, but with Packer's own remixes of label favourites making up over a third of the tracklist, the collection as a whole is pretty much unmissable.

Well...at 44 tracks large, maybe it's been worth the wait...coming from a man who back in the day helped set up Twilight 76 that released classics from the likes of DJs Assault, Deon and Slugo to Dave Clarke and Todd Osborne. More recently Godfather relaunched his Databass label which he now champions with an epic, straight-shootin' and unpretentious full time opus that takes in every angle of Detroit ghetto tech, be it the more contemporary, breakbeat and footwork sounds of "Smoke In The Air" to the gnarilier electro vibes of "The D". Review: It's a shame how little drum & bass makes its way across the Atlantic from the good ol' US of A, but Digital 6 are one of the labels which truly excel at flying the stars and stripes. This compilation seeks to push the junglist sounds of a country quite separate from the jungle itself, and with that in mind the curators behind this particular endeavour have done a fantastic job. It's a fresh take on the time-tested formulae of the 1990s, and it's summarised best by Cubik 1 on 'Anything', which sees rough and tumble breaks fall over their heels into the welcoming arms of soulful sampling and vital atmospheric tones. There are too many artists to list here considering the tracklist reaches a mighty 34, but just rest assured that this is a proper jungle album you'd be silly to miss.

Review: Northern scene legend Adam Wigglesworth sadly passed away on April 3. This is how his friends responded... By compiling one of the biggest tribute albums drum & bass has ever seen. Just look at the amount of talent on here: Pyxis, Euphonique, Nvrsoft, No Concept, Exile, Euphonique, Dawn Raid and so many more artists have contribute to this 45 track album of which all proceeds go to Adam's family. From the blazing bass riff of Sappo's late 90s style neck snapper "Hannibal" to Exile's turbine bass growler "Symbiosis" via Sl8r's jazzy, almost Detroit style vibes on "The Mill" and various bits from Wiggo himself, this is a heartfelt salute from the entire scene to a man who'll be sorely missed.

Review: The world's most famous Irish-Iranian DJ/producer serves up a fourth collection of disco and boogie re-edits on his own Re-Loved label. The album features 19 full-length tracks plus two hour-long mixed versions from Haji himself, and the artist roster reads like a Who's Who of the re-edit scene, featuring as it does names like Dr Packer, Chewy Rubs, Birdee and Chuggin' Edits. What's most pleasing, though, is the non-obvious nature of the tracklist: sure, Ian Ossia's opener 'Someone To Count' borrows from Dennis Edwards but that's about as far as we got with trying to identity source material before shrugging our shoulders and just sitting back to enjoy...

Review: Freestyle's series of genre-themed download bundles continues, with June's 'Afro & Latin!' and September's 'Funk!' comps now joined by this 40-track collection of soul and disco nuggets from the label's back catalogue. The set kicks off with a bona fide classic in the form of Omar's 'There's Nothing Like This', after which come 39 more cuts from the likes of Carleen Anderson, Kyle Audist and The Fantastics (not to mention, in featured vocalist form, Jocelyn Brown and Caron Wheeler). The title's something of a misnomer - the emphasis is firmly on 'new old' soul, future R&B and neo-soul rather than disco - but there's much to enjoy here all the same.

Review: There's much to admire about Kamaal Williams' contribution to the long running DJ Kicks series, not least the producer, DJ and keyboardist's blend of self-made exclusives (both under his name and his alternative Henry Wu alias) and largely overlooked gems. Highlights in the former category include a stunning live version of "Snitches Brew", the jazzy Latin house of "Projections" (a Henry Wu hook-up with Earl Jeffers) and "Lowrider", a jazz guitar-propelled cut from his collaborative Yusuf Kamaal project. In the latter category, we'd suggest wrapping your ears around Awanto 3's dusty and ultra-deep "Pregnant", the deep jazz-funk bliss of Diggs Duke's "Cause I Love You", the up-tempo dancefloor soul of Peven Everett's "Stuck" and the slow motion wonder that is Steve Spacek's "Hey There".

Review: Given that the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is happening on their doorstep, it's little surprise to see Armada Music's house offshoot Armada Subjekt releasing a celebratory compilation. Featuring no less than 30 cuts the label expects to do the business during the weeklong event, it's full to bursting with high quality club cuts. Highlights include Gerd Janson's chunky, acid-flecked revision of Joe Smooth classic "Promised Land", a muscular, mind-altering dark room take on Harry Romero's "Tania" by Honey Dijon, a sublime chunk of classic-sounding peak-time house from Low Steppa and Amy Douglas ("Burn Me Up"), a ludicrously sub-heavy slab of dark garage from Javi Nora and Piem, and some slick big room tech-house business by DJ Vivona.

Review: Veteran Dutch producer Orlando Voorn has been producing house and techno for nigh on three decades now, releasing seminal classics under varied aliases such as Fix, Basic Bastard, Designer Loops and The Nighttripper among many others. Moreover, he was one of the first Dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between Detroit and Amsterdam. A best of compilation covering many fine moments throughout Voorn's career was well overdue, and The Best Of Orlando Voorn features a bunch of right classics and anthems alike: not limited to the crossover classic Flash" (as Fix), the hi-tech soul of "Where Is Your Evidence" (as Frequency), the soulful vocal house of "Dance" (as Format) and the wonky percolator jack of "Dream World" (as Complex).

Review: Deep In The Jungle got picked out by UKF has one of the top labels of 2018 the other week and it's certainly well deserved, for they just consistently bang out some of the most vibey jungle around. They also represent forthcoming artists and we'll always support those who give a platform to people who otherwise might not. The album is a huge fifty tracks, spanning some well-known names like DJ Hybrid, SL8R, Conrad Subs, RMS and Kumarachi. The latter kicks off the album with a bang, 'Have You Here' sweeping down the range with its DLR-esque bassline and riotous attitude. It's a emblematic of the quality present on the rest of the album - check it out.

Review: One of the most iconic and prolific labels in the D&B scene, Fokuz Recordings manage to simultaneously show off the best in the game whilst supporting new talent and the results are fantastic. This album - a recap of 2018 - exemplifies their approach. It's full of big names and bigger tracks, including S.P.Y's remix of 'Always Yours' by Macca & Loz Contreras, Artificial Intelligence's remix of 'String City' by Lenzman and Calibre's remix of 'Forward Thinking' by Satl. Whilst these are obviously great, the bigger story lies in the lesser-known participants and their ability to pull at your heartstrings. DJ Ransome, Edlan, Soligen amongst others all come seriously correct on this LP, turning it into a seriously good release.

As executive producers, they work with other producers, artists, writers, and remixers to use the labels as a vehicle of expression. Here they present UK producer Dave Anthony, who from early '90s has been knee deep into the US sound - first picking up with the vibe of Detroit, then his real love coming from the soulful sound of New York. Featured here are some of his club anthems from over the years, remixed by himself and fellow label alumni. Review: Thunder Jam's latest release is something of a sprawling epic; a 23-track "Invasion" featuring some of the hottest names in the re-edit and nu-disco scenes, alongside contributions from lesser-known talents. There's much to admire throughout, from the low-slung boogie bass and cut glass disco strings of Phil Da Burn's "Wallflower" and the spacey synth-funk of Funk Bank's wiggly "Jamming With The Thunder", to the bouncy disco/New Jersey garage fusion of BOI's "The Gift" and the straightened-out sunshine soul of Dee Bunk's "Little Brown Eye Girl". Throw in solid contributions from Don Dayglo, Belabouche, C Da Afro and Andy Buchan, and you've got a pleasingly varied set of floor-friendly excursions.

Review: Given the glowing reception to last year's Jungle To The World compilation, it makes for no surprise that Liondub have called on the curatorial skills of all-round junglist scholar, Marcus Visionary, to compile a second volume. The blend of legends and innovators alike is present once more, as Visionary pulls together 14 tracks from an all-star cast of producers renowned for pushing forth the reggae-infused jungle sound. Naturally the highlights come thick and fast, but Bladerunner's fierce "Guidance Dub" and Marcus Visionary's own collab with iconic reggae vocalist Jonny Osbourne, "Lend Me", stand out. Some killer sampling of the classic "Armagideon Time" abounds in this latter cut. E for essential!

Review: The word jazz is criminally misused. One can wear jazzy trousers. One can flash jazzy hands. Shucks, one can even cook a recipe called 'jazzy potatoes'. But real, actual, jazz - the idea of fusion, improvisation and the notion of not following formula - is hard to find outside of the genre itself. Until you hit the fringes and deeper or classical side of drum & bass. Textures Music Group's Jazz Legends series is a great example; the wily drum dynamics on Soultec's "The Happening", the stroppy sub bass wriggles on Blade's "Back In The Days", the cosy synth nests between the snares on Aquasion's "Sax In The City". The true spirit of contemporary jazz is alive and kicking at 170BPM right here.

Review: Terrence Dixon's announcement of plans to retire from techno with immediate effect earlier this year have typically gone without any further explanation, though it's been heartening to see his final round of projects surface over the course of 2014. Having already committed a killer Population One 12" to Metroplex, Dixon delivers another fitting parting shot in this LP for Rush Hour, who took their name from his classic Pop One production "Rush Hour". Theater Of A Confused Mind is a powerful statement from Dixon, expanding on the sci-fi themes of previous Population One material and posing several cryptic questions. Dixon's own voice introduces the album on "Out Of Control" and as matters progress those trademark queasy lines of melody begin to take control - "Inner City Circus" being a stand out of this set.

Review: House DJs MYNC offer an exhaustive overview of the tracks that rocked the long-running White Island venue this summer. In the soulful corner, there's the Maxi Soundsystem take on Boris Dlugosch's "Look Around You". Featuring Roisin Murphy on vocals, it does a lot to sweep away the rainy autumn blues. Ten Walls deliver the trancey goods in the shape of "Gotham", which revolves around a belching bassline, but the most notable aspect of Ibiza 2013 is the way minimal producers have come into the house fold. Loco Dice borrows a prog house bassline for 'Detox' and Luciano's "Rise Of The Angel" - remixed here by Andrea Oliva - is a piano-led, wide eyed deep anthem.

Review: Few DJs have more experience of providing the soundtrack to Balearic sunsets than Chris Coco and Pete Gooding. It's perhaps fitting, then, that they've compiled and mixed this second installment of the Gecko Beach Club (based on Formentera, Ibiza's little brother) mix series. This bulging digital package contains a mix from each (Coco's is defiantly hazy and downtempo, Gooding's packed full of tactile deep house), plus their selections in unmixed form. There are some real gems to be found, from the sun-kissed simplicity of Seu Jorge and Almaz's unfussy cover of "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", and Blackbelt Andersen's spine-tingling "Mann Pa Mars", to the wide-eyed Balearic house goodness of Gooding's own "Malibu", and the bassy strut of Waifs & Strays' "Remedy".

Review: The word 'unique' is grave danger of wheezing its last breath these days. Very few things genuinely are 'one of a kind' Especially in dance music. The crazy Italian kids at Slowild, however, are really unique. Taking hardstyle theory to the glitch and moombhaton audience, they've slowed down one of the scariest forms of music to create something really interesting. At points you'll be reaching for the record player to switch the speed up, before realising it's digital and supposed to sound this way. Oozing drama and imagination, this is the best hardstyle album you will ever hear.
